Adsense Heatmap Image:

I have visited many discussion forums and scouted the internet to create this tutorial.

But first, let’s look at the official Google AdSense heat map, Which clearly talks about the best AdSense placement without annoying your readers.

It’s a fact that non-technology websites make double the money then technology websites reason being that readers of technology websites are well aware of advertisements and they generally ignore the advertisement, on the other hand, non-technology websites like dating, astrology websites make more money with google advertisement because of unawareness of the readers.

Another fact is when readers from technology websites read the article and they find it useful they click on the advertisement to appreciate the article. While putting the advertisement, do you think of the following points:

  • Why are your readers here?
  • Is content more important than advertisement?
  • Where to keep the advertisement without hampering your reader’s point and without knocking down your advertisement.

“Smart work is always better than hard work.”

You might think that I can write a better post and get more organic traffic and Better traffic = Better Income. But think the other way of placing adverts at the right place and at the same time concentrate on the better quality of post thus you will accomplish both the task: Traffic and income

Best advertisement placement guide:

Ad placement at Top of the article header again has better Google AdSense CTR.

If you thinking only about the revenue you can place an advertisement between the content.

Google search for your website is also a good idea to increase some more revenue, and placing the Google search unit at the best visible place on your website would be a much better idea.

Another few places where you can place an advertisement for better CTR:

  • Above the post
  • In between article
  • Sidebar banner

Though I will suggest placing advertisement smartly without hampering your reader view and instead of keeping space on your website it’s better to fill it with the advertisement.

hope this post will turn my hard work into some more adsense revenue..
especially thanks for the heatmap image elaboration..

Vow!, I do use a 300×250 in ATP position and it’s the best performing add unit for me but CTR (overall) is very less – usually around 0.8%; Although, 728×90 also performs well above the post.

  3. Samir

You simply rock! Harsh. This could infact help me become a template designer too! Eespecially with blogspot template designing enabled though Blogger in Draft.

    Hello Harsh,
Recently I got an adsense approval. I’m placing ads above the post content and sky scrapper in sidebar. I need ur advice with the placement. Which is a most effective spot for you?

  5. Blake

I’ve always had a hard time deciding where to put adsense blocks. Right now I have blocks on both of my sidebars, but they aren’t really super effective.

It really seems like the hottest spot is at the top of the post which can be annoying. I’ve noticed on DBT he doesn’t have an ad block on his newer posts, but older posts have an adblock at the top of the page. Do you know what plugin you can use to do that?

    1. Alison

I use a plugin called Ad Injection which allows you to set up an ad unit to come out 0-10 days after the post goes live.

  6. I like this quote: Smart work is always better then hard work. However the guide is too old to me 🙂 Thanks

  7. Uttoran Sen

nice tips, from personal experience, the bigger rectangles just under the title with content on all sides works the best 🙂

i met a guy in yahoo he says he can get a adsense account

  10. Aaron

I’ve noticed that regardless of where my ads are placed I get the most clicks when I have an active adwords campaign in place. I guess certain types of people click ads more so than others.
On a different note, I read your adsense search post. Please tell me how are you able to have the search button below the text box? I did not encounter that option during the set up, and it apears to have the button only to the right of the text box.

    1. Uttoran Sen

unfortunately adwords campaigns on pages where you have adsense ads is not allowed, that can risk both your adsense and adwords accounts because its breaking both’s tos…

      1. Aaron

I don’t think you understood what I was referring to.
At times I will activate an Adwords campaign, drawing visitors to my site. During the time period that my own ad campaign is active my adsense earnings go up.
Obviously my adwords campaign ads are not showing up on my site, that would be a waste of money. So explain please how I am breaking either account’s tos.

  11. STRAIGHTALK

I have been reading a bit more of your articles and man you really make sense.. really hard to find great content like yours.. hope to tighten up the gaps with you for this new year!

  12. Anish K.S

If you need money place big units, display a mix of links/search/ad units.

  13. Gurpreet Singh

I try To Experiment Always with Placement. Above Title Post Performs Better but Below Title is not too bad

  14. Gustavo

I’m trying to place my adsense ads in between the title and content, but can’t find the tutorial on how to do it (I’m using thesis theme). Can you help me how you got yours to work?

    1. Uttoran Sen

why not use the whydowork adsense plugin 🙂

  15. Stefan

I’ve tried to reload the page a few times now but I can’t see any content. When checking the source code it is there, but not else. I’m using Firefox 3 with Windows XP.

    1. Stefan

I found the problem now. For some reason AdBlock Plus thinks the whole content-box is advertising and hides it. Maybe you could have a look at it?

      1. Harsh Agrawal

Thanks for the input Stefan , I was trying to figure out the problem. Your pointer will be helpful. Let me check why ad block plus is acting weird..

  16. Jessica Guerro

Good article about how to set up adsense ads on your page to be most effective. It should also be noted that you need to find a balance between the amount of ads and good content.

  17. edos

I have added adsense to my blog for the past six months and my account balance is at about $10, is this normal or what ?

    1. Harsh Agrawal

Edos is depends on your traffic and CTR and also niche. 10$ in six month is less IMO. I believe you should play with your adsense placement.

  18. Puneet

Harsh, while choosing ad position in custom channel whats the name of the position which is the darkest (orange)

  19. IndianCashMaker

Well, Placing Adsense ads in the sidebar is good idea. Above the fold should work great. I get maximum benefit by placing ad in sidebar above the fold.

    1. Harsh Agrawal

That’s true.. but here at Shoutmeloud I prefer putting up Direct advertisement , which pays better 🙂
Else putting up 350 rectangle box on sidebar above the fold has great CTR.

  20. Veera

In my experience with Adsense, placing them right before the title is performing well.

    1. Harsh Agrawal

Veera for me adsense unit above post is working the best. Another one is placing a 350 block in the sidebar also perform great. Thanks for your comment.

      1. Prajjwal Rajput

Thanks This post is very informative for me and i think the best place for adsense is below and above the posts/content.
