Best Adsense Placement

When ever we talk about increasing adsense CPC, one of the most common word which you will hear is “Adsense heatmap”.  In this post, I will be giving you a brief idea about heatmap and best adsense placement ideas.

Google adsense advertisement is the best way for any blogger to earn through Blogging and there websites but the problem is always about which is the best place to place the adverts. Prime aim of any blogger is to give excellent content and he can’t take a risk to place advertisement at the middle of the post which is very annoying. Also, after Google panda updates, it’s become necessary to keep less ads around content and above the fold. Though Google itself suggest to place ads above the fold for higher CTR. Anyways, lets get back to original topic and learn some best adsense placement ideas.

Adsense placement is quite tricky and placing your Google adsense adverts can double your traffic if you place your advertisement with trick and without annoying readers. With little cleverness you can actually double your Google adsense income.

Adsense Heatmap Image:

I have visited many discussion forum and here goes the guide which might help you to increase your revenue: First of all have a look at official Google adsense heat map Which clearly talks about the best adsense placement without annoying your readers.

Adsense Heatmap

It’s a fact that non technology websites make double of the money then technology websites reason being that reader of technology websites are well aware of advertisement and they generally ignore the advertisement but on the other hand non technology websites like dating, astrology websites make more money with google advertisement because of unawareness of the readers.

Another fact is when readers from technology websites read the article and they find it useful they click on advertisement to appreciate the article. While putting advertisement do you think of following points:

  • Why your readers are here?
  • Content is more important or advertisement?
  • Where to keep the advertisement without hampering your readers point and without knocking down your advertisement.

“Smart work is always better then hard work”

You might think that I can write better post and get more organic traffic and Better traffic = Better Income. But think the other way placing adverts at the right place and at the same time concentrate on better quality of post thus you will accomplish both the task: Traffic and income

Best advertisement placement guide:

Before advertisement have a look at maximum allowed adsense ad units Before the post ( text advertisement have better CTR then the image advertisement at that place)

  • Have a look at SEOunleashed he cleverly placed the advertisement (Yahoo advertisement) between the posts which does not even look like an advertisement but you need to be very careful with keywords when you planning to do anything like this.
  • Ad placement at Top of the article header again have better Google adsense CTR.
  • If you thinking only about revenue you can place advertisement between the content.( Link units )
  • Google search for your website is also a good idea to increase some more revenue and placing Google search unit at the best visible place on your website would be much better idea.

After a few years of working with Adsense, I noticed that the typography of the website could greatly affect your CTR. Making your headings smaller, as well as keeping all the elements with the same color scheme has helped me to bring more attention to the ads displayed on my sites, hence improving my earnings.

Thanks a lot for helping me as a adsense beginner. I have made an wp site with video and by implementing your tips i got best out of it. but i think we have to test various color plate and placement to get best output of adsense earning. And an leaderboard above the fold will perform best all the old time as well as now.

    Hello Harsh,
I’m not getting good CPC though i have good traffic on my blog. I’ve kept 3 in total ads. 1 in side bar and 2 inside the post. Does because of 3 ads it decreases my CPC.

Should i go for affiliate marketing now or can i get the direct advertising ? please help :)

Thanks for such an informative article. For my site, the ads below the navigation bar and bottom of the right sidebar (marked in white in google adsense heat map) works best.

  6. Rakesh Mondal says

Well that was very informative. For me it works better on medium rectangle on side bars and leaderboard near title bars. I have been experimenting since long and this one increased revenue to nice 40% in one month.
I am not sure but I red somewhere that, Lesser Number of ads and on upper folds pays more CPC ? Which Strategy is good ? Put less but on right place OR put all the three possible ads on heat map location?

  8. Shane says

I created a wordpress plugin called AmpedSense which will help you split test your adsense ads. Should help you for exactly this reason!

  9. says

Thanks for this. i had heard somewhere that putting less ad units on pages would mean that the CPC rate would go up, is this true? As the advertisers would be forced to bid more to get their ad shown in a spot. I tried it two days ago but as of yet my CPC has remained the same, but my CTR has decreased.

Well, I must say Placing Adsense ads in the sidebar is a very good idea. Above the fold should work great. I get maximum benefit by placing ad in sidebar above the fold.

Vow!, I do use a 300×250 in ATP position and it’s the best performing add unit for me but CTR (overall) is very less – usually around 0.8%; Although, 728×90 also performs well above the post.

  15. Samir says

You simply rock! Harsh. This could infact help me become a template designer too! Eespecially with blogspot template designing enabled though Blogger in Draft.

    Hello Harsh,
Recently I got an adsense approval. I’m placing ads above the post content and sky scrapper in sidebar. I need ur advice with the placement. Which is a most effective spot for you?

  17. Blake says

I’ve always had a hard time deciding where to put adsense blocks. Right now I have blocks on both of my sidebars, but they aren’t really super effective.

It really seems like the hottest spot is at the top of the post which can be annoying. I’ve noticed on DBT he doesn’t have an ad block on his newer posts, but older posts have an adblock at the top of the page. Do you know what plugin you can use to do that?

I’ve noticed that regardless of where my ads are placed I get the most clicks when I have an active adwords campaign in place. I guess certain types of people click ads more so than others.
On a different note, I read your adsense search post. Please tell me how are you able to have the search button below the text box? I did not encounter that option during the set up, and it apears to have the button only to the right of the text box.

    • Uttoran Sen says

unfortunately adwords campaigns on pages where you have adsense ads is not allowed, that can risk both your adsense and adwords accounts because its breaking both’s tos…

      • says

I don’t think you understood what I was referring to.
At times I will activate an Adwords campaign, drawing visitors to my site. During the time period that my own ad campaign is active my adsense earnings go up.
Obviously my adwords campaign ads are not showing up on my site, that would be a waste of money. So explain please how I am breaking either account’s tos.

  23. STRAIGHTALK says

I’m trying to place my adsense ads in between the title and content, but can’t find the tutorial on how to do it (I’m using thesis theme). Can you help me how you got yours to work?

  26. Stefan says

I’ve tried to reload the page a few times now but I can’t see any content. When checking the source code it is there, but not else. I’m using Firefox 3 with Windows XP.

    • Stefan says

I found the problem now. For some reason AdBlock Plus thinks the whole content-box is advertising and hides it. Maybe you could have a look at it?

  27. Jessica Guerro says

Good article about how to set up adsense ads on your page to be most effective. It should also be noted that you need to find a balance between the amount of ads and good content.

  28. edos says

I have added adsense to my blog for the past six months and my account balance is at about $10, is this normal or what ?

  29. Puneet says

Harsh, while choosing ad position in custom channel whats the name of the position which is the darkest (orange)

  30. IndianCashMaker says

Well, Placing Adsense ads in the sidebar is good idea. Above the fold should work great. I get maximum benefit by placing ad in sidebar above the fold.

    • says

That’s true.. but here at Shoutmeloud I prefer putting up Direct advertisement , which pays better :)
Else putting up 350 rectangle box on sidebar above the fold has great CTR.

      • Prajjwal Rajput says

Thanks This post is very informative for me and i think the best place for adsense is below and above the posts/content.
