Maximum Allowed AdSense Ad Units on a Web Page

UPDATE: This article has been updated in December 2019 with the latest information. Read carefully, as this can help you earn more money from Adsense.

We all know that AdSense is (to date) the best contextual, high-paying ad network.

But AdSense also has very strictly enforced program policies. If they find that a website is in violation of their TOS, they will permanently disable the offending account.

It is very important to follow AdSense’s quality and program guidelines in order to avoid having your AdSense account banned.

Here’s one of the most common questions new bloggers ask:

  • “What is the maximum number of AdSense units I can put on a page?”

Google AdSense offers different types of ads and most are categorized in the following formats:

  • AdSense Content Unit
  • AdSense Link Unit
  • AdSense For Search

(AdSense used to offer AdSense video units as well, but they ultimately retired this option.)

Here are the maximum AdSense ad units allowed for a web page:

AdSense Content Unit

Earlier, AdSense had a maximum limit of 3 ad units (while “premium partners” enjoyed serving up to 6 ad units).

In August 2016, AdSense lifted the ad unit limit for every site.

  • You can now place an unlimited amount of AdSense ads on a page.

However, advertising and other paid promotional material added to your pages should not exceed your content.

In other words:

  • You also need to maintain the quality of your site.

AdSense Content Units are available in following sizes:

  • 728*90
  • 468*60
  • 234*60
  • 125*125
  • 120*600
  • 160*600
  • 180*150
  • 120*240
  • 200*200
  • 250*250
  • 300*250
  • 336*280

Personally, I have found 336*280 and 160*600 to be the most effective.

You can also use ads from multiple publisher IDs.

(Note: I have started serving ads using Ezoic which is also helping me to increase my overall revenue.)

AdSense Link Units

AdSense Link Units perform really well when blended with your theme and placed above the fold.

I tested this by placing one in the Navbar and it turned out to be one of my best-performing ad units.

Again, you can place unlimited Link Units as long as the ads are not exceeding the content.

You can find the various sizes for AdSense Link Units here.

AdSense For Search

For a big website, AdSense For Search units perform really well.

If you have not yet set up AdSense For Search units, read our guide:

How many AdSense ads can you put on a page?

As mentioned above, Google has lifted the limit restrictions. As long as your ads do not exceed your content, there is no upper limit on the number of ads on a single page.

It’s important to note that while picking the number of ads, you should think about the short posts on your blog. If you decide to place more than 5-6 ad units, and you are placing them sitewide using a plugin, you might be spamming your own short posts with a large number of ads.

AdSense has explicitly mentioned:

  • “We may limit or disable ad serving on pages with little to no value and/or excessive advertising until changes are made.”

So I suggest you keep less than 5 ads per page.

I usually stick to 3 or 4.

But you should identify your own limit according to your blog’s layout.

A few things which I have learned from my own experience:

  • Sometimes lower number ad units perform better than more ad units.
  • Placing ads above the fold yields better results.
  • A combination of image + text ads performs better.

There are many different options available for the placement of ads, but I highly recommend using a minimum amount of ad units or utilizing adverts only at the bottom or on the sidebar.

Let us know how many AdSense ad units you are using on your blog. Now that Google has lifted the limit, are you using more AdSense ad units, or are you keeping it the same? Share your experience in the comments!

    1. Hey Marcelo,

Adsense revenue depends on a number of factors like no. of clicks, geographical location, type of ad, placement of ad. So, I suppose there is nothing wrong with your earning. Also, you can definitely try Amazon ad and see which one is working better for you.

    1. Hi OLUWASEUN,

I also had same problem on our Blog (www.fitlogy.com).
Sometimes adsense approval also depends on the mood of the approver.I have seen various sites with plagiarised article + article less than 300 words got approved.

      I have followed these steps.
      1. Include 3-4 good quality articles (1000 – 1500 words)
      2. Submit the site map once you published this articles.
      3. Apply Google Adsense within a week, after submission of the sitemap
      4. Dont post any short article during this period. Lengthy article should be in the home Page.

      Good luck !

  4. Thank you very much Harsh Agrawal for updating us about Adsense Ad placement policy. I got to know about it in an Adsense live hangout but just to confirm I’ve visited this post; that I’ve saved in my bookmarks. I knew that you would have updated this post.

    Hello,

Thanks for the valuable information about putting the number of adsense ads in a single page. I’m new in the field of blogging and recently I got approved from Google Adsense program after many rejected applications.

So, I placed only 3 text/image ads in my blog pages. I really don’t familiar about putting extra +3 link and +2 search ads units.

Now, I will definitely use these ad units on my blog. But I have confusion about where to place which type of ad units best suitable for my blog http://www.postrays[dot]com , Please inspect my blog and give me the right solution for it.

      1. Hi..currently I am posting one adsense advt. in sidewidget.. This is just 3 month old news website thecheckernews.com … gradually I will add more contents and ad units too. Just want to know is 1 ad unit in the side widget okay or not ? I get around 50 visitors daily…

  6. Hi Harsh,

Thank you for this interesting article about how many AdSense ads you can place on a website. This is very useful to experienced webmasters and newcomers alike. I believe AdSense can be a great source of revenue, but too many new website owners add AdSense on their web pages without developing good content first.

And in my opinion, good content is the single most important criteria to have a successful website. I believe webmasters should try to create content that helps their audience before they think about monetizing their website.
If this content is of a high quality, it will get shared, Google will like it, webmasters will be getting more traffic, and THEN, they can think about earning money with AdSense.

If you are patient, you’ll be rewarded for your efforts.

  7. Hi Harsh,
You’re absolutely right about less than 5 ads per page, because if i put more than 5 ads per page or even 10 ads. Website will look like a trash. Many websites in my country have used 10 ads per pages and i really hate this, it makes me really distractions and can’t concentrate to content.

    Best regards,
    Min.

  8. Awesome info. Personally doing three units maximum which are responsive and its working fine and better cpc compared to maximizing on image and link units. Too mush units creates clutter and give website visitors poor experience.Less is more in the end.

  9. If the page has more text content then we can add max. 5 ads units including 1 link unit or not??

    thanks for the nice article

  10. Hello harsh,

For newbie like me its very hard to understand all marketing related activities and promotion too..

I have quite blogging since a long time back. But now i have started my own business for that i want to promote my blog. At this stage making adsense response that matching with the theme was very much hard but after getting your stuff, I am really confidence about adsense placement.

    Thanks a lot Dear…

    1. Hey Vansh,

Adsense has removed the 3 ad policy. Now, you can place as many ads as you want. However, I do not advice to put more than 5 ads for a quality user experience.

  11. hey,
thanks for the information but i failed to understand one thing that if i add more than 3 ads on my page will my adsense account will get suspended?

  12. thanks harsh! You are my inspiration. I have started using SEMrush to getting things right way. One thing which i am totally failing at is backlinks bulding startegy. Please help

Hii Haresh I’m a Blogger. I’m Run Some Blog. And I Have Already Approved Adsense Account
But Their Are Some Problem With Me. My Reveune Not Increased And My CPM And RPM Is Very Low Ex. CPC is 0.03 And RPM Is 0.08. Please Help me to improved It.

    1. It is fully depended on your trafic source. For example your trafic is from USA then your CPC will be very high as copared to other contries like india. if anybody reach your website from google search engine then definatly your cpc will be high as compared to direct link you shared on FB.

  14. I am using adsense above the images. can some body tell me, if i am doing fine or not. Give me some tips to get good earning through Adsense
