Technically speaking, a self-hosted WordPress blog is the “professional” side of WordPress blogging as you have total control over your website, on the other hand, WordPress.com is good for starting a free blog where you just need to start a blog. The biggest limitation of WordPress.com blogging platform is you can’t monetize with popular ad platform like AdSense & many others. I have covered this in-depth over here.

But for a beginner, it’s always wise to start a blog on WordPress.com or BlogSpot without spending a dime (ie it’s free).

The WordPress team just announced a new portal for those who wish to learn WordPress and start their first WordPress.com blog.

This is really helpful for beginners who wish to know how to sign up and start writing their first blog post.

I’m sure many of you who have not started blogging yet will welcome this new portal from the WordPress team.

Step by step guide to create a free blog on WordPres.com:

To get started, click on this link & click on get started.

On the next page select the kind of website you want to start on WordPress.com.

For the sake of this tutorial, I’m selecting “Start with a blog”. Do remember, many options like online store & few others would require you to get a paid subscription. In that case, you are better of by creating your blog on self-hosted WordPress by following this guide.

Next step for you is to select the theme you want to use. You can always change your theme at a later stage as well.

  • Save

Next step is to pick the name for your blog. By default WordPress offers .WordPress domain name which is free. However, you can also select a custom domain name like yourname.blog, yourname.org to make your blog sound professional. For using a custom domain name, you need to upgrade to WordPress.com premium plan. Since we are creating a free WordPress blog, let’s stick to WordPress.com domain name.

  • Save

Click on select & on the next page you will be given option to select from various WordPress.com plans including free plan.

  • Save

Select free & on the next page you need to create a WordPress.com account to finish creating your free blog. After this, everything is easy & your free blog will be up & running in no time.

    Hi Harsh,
First of all, many thanks for explaining all these in detail. For a newbie like me, it is indeed very helpful. But it is so much information to process, I am getting a bit confused (you know, a good student always have some questions to ask 😉 ) although my question may seem a bit silly, but i have to ask.
If i am understanding this correct,
    1) starting with WordPress.com is free. To do that i need to visit WordPress.com and follow the steps and whoo! I am done! No web hosting needed.
    2) If i need a self-hosted blog (i.e. WordPress.org) then I need to first buy web hosting and domain name (say, from Bluehost). Then install WordPress and get going as you have explained. Of course, it is paid.

    Am I getting this right?

Word press is only best, but yet still blog spot drives people because you can earn from a totally free service. To earn from word press, you need a separate investment, but its really worth I know.

So, there can’t be a real good comparison between these two popular blogging service. Both are good in their own ways!

I am on wordpress.com. Also, few other blogs plateform like Blog.com is also good.

  10. Sajittha

Thank you very much for your info, Harsh. But still I love blogger(Blogspot.com).

    1. Harsh Agrawal

Sajitha any particular reason for loving BlogSpot over WordPress?

      1. Sajitha

I know, WordPress has more advantages over Blogger. But, as part-time blogger, I am comfortable with Blogger. I prefer Blogger for some reasons. They are,
        1. No web hosting fee.
        2. No need to purchase a Domain name. (But, I recently bought one for my blog)
        3. No downtime

Some people say, Blogger is not SEO friendly. But, we can overcome it with some technics.

        1. Harsh Agrawal

Sajitha I agree with your point but again one of the biggest disadvantage of BlogSpot blog is control. Google still holds the control of your log and it can delete it at any point of time.. That’s one of the biggest drawback ..
