Interlinking of blog posts is one very important parameter of on-page SEO. It improves the contextual score of your blog and also helps in ranking higher in the search engine.

I have seen many bloggers rely heavily on related posts section for interlinking, which is not the best solution. To make your on-Page SEO and on-site SEO strong, you should have proper internal linking between your blog posts.

In WordPress, there are various ways to interlink your blog posts, and in this guide, I will share all the best plugins that you can use right away.

Most of the solutions listed below are free and only one of them is paid, which I use for all my blogs.

Before I share WordPress interlinking solutions, let me quickly share what are the direct benefits of interlinking your articles:

  • Crawling and Deep-Indexing: Interlinking helps search engine bots to crawl and index your articles effectively.
  • Bounce rate and more page views: Right interlinking helps reduces the bounce rate to a great extent. The only key here is, your internal linking should be relevant.
  • Passes link juice: It passes link juice from one page to another. This is one reason, I highly recommend to link from your old articles to a recent one.
  • On page SEO benefit: Interlinking also helps in on-page SEO.

Now, let’s look at all the solution for WordPress bloggers to interlink their blog posts like a pro.

Best WordPress Interlinking Plugins and tricks

1. LinkWhisper:

Link whisper is the most advanced interlinking WordPress plugin available in the market. The beauty of the plugin is, once you install it, within seconds it will scan all of your WordPress websites and start suggesting you words that you could link to.

This is a unique plugin that helps in improving the internal link of WordPress.

Watch the below video to learn how Linkwhisper plugin helps in Internal linking SEO:

  • Save

This is the modern auto internal linking plugin for WordPress which is also Gutenberg ready.  Interlinks Manager plugin offers the following features which you would require in 2020:

  • Calculate the link juice
  • Set words to automatic link to link of your choice
  • Include/Exclude custom post type
  • Suggest internal links in the post-editing section (This is super useful)
  • Track the internal links
  • Export data to CSV
SEO Smart link premium

Update: I don’t recommend SEO Smart link plugin anymore. (July 2020)

This plugin is for the automatic interlinking of blog articles. It automatically links your taxonomies (tags and categories) and you can set your own rules for automatic interlinking. For example, you can choose to link all articles with “Make money online” in them to link to a specific blog post. Such a command will automatically interlink old and future posts containing the word “Make money online” with your specific link.

Similarly, you can have unlimited linking and especially for blogs with huge content, this plugin is a time-saver. The premium version of the plugin also offers the caching feature so that your blog doesn’t slow down. This is a paid plugin and costs about $149.

Here is a detailed review of SEO Smart link premium plugin.

Note: I have not tested, but I have found this “Internal links manager” as a free alternative to SEO Smart links.

WordPress default Post interlinking
  • Save

WordPress also offers a default feature to let you quickly interlink your blog posts. Whenever you select a text and click on the hyperlink to add a link, you can search for your published post from there and link it directly to the anchor text.

This is a default feature of WordPress and it’s very useful.

Update: Yoast premium can also be used to improve internal linking. However, it’s not automated but worth looking at. You can read about it here.

Conclusion: Which is the best plugin for interlinking blog posts?

I currently use a combination of Linkwhisper + Yoast SEO Premium to manage internal linking. The manual internal linking offers better relevancy and Linkwhisper matching engine makes it easier to do just that.

There are a few more plugins that are available, but these are the best solutions that you can use for WordPress interlinking. Do let me know what strategy you follow for blog posts interlinking.

Hello Harsh, nice list you have there, its rather unfortunate that i wasnt doing this for so long now, only discovered of recent and even at that, have been doing it all manually from the WordPress link editor.

Thanks alot for the share, will make it all easier for me.
    Thanks Again, Godwill

  2. Thanks for the tips. Now I know that interlinks are beneficial. Gonna put more then in the posts.

    🙂

  3. I always wonder how you guys interlink in your blog post. As Manually its quite impossible as you have thousands of articles in your blog. Now you have made clear how doing this. I really thank to you.

  4. Ideally, each blog post contain interlinking to other blog post which related to that blog post. This can make readers to stay the blog longer and improve the bounce rate.

The interlinking should be dofollow for getting max result in SEO purpose.

  5. I don’t know much about them. So far used the WP default linking method only. And I am very happy with that as I can search for my desired keyword I want to link, instead of going for auto link.
    Very nice information shared…:)

  6. Great post, Harsh. I’ve always been doing interlinking of posts on my own, but since I have a lot of posts now, it’s has become very difficult for me to choose the right posts to interlink to. But it seems like the Premium version of SEO Smart Links can make my job a lot easier. I have used the free version of the plugin in the past, but didn’t find mheyself using it thereafter. I gotta give the pro version a shot now. Thanks a lot for this guide, really helpful for me 🙂

    Hey Harsh,

    Useful post as usual.

I was a huge fan of WordPress insights plugin. Once WordPress introduced ‘Search and Interlink’ option, I stopped using that plugin. Now I am using the default option and it works great for me.

I’ve never used SEO Smart link plugin. But I am using SEO Pressor and it has an automatic linking option.

Mentionable seems interesting. I’ll give it a try.

  8. Hi Harsh, Well SEO Smart Plugin look like it is worth trying. Mentionable Plugin heard first time. Do these plugins have any bugs or are they complimentary to other popular plugins? I think i read somewhere. Anyways, it is a good post. 🙂

  9. I think use of plugins for internal linking is not a good idea. It may increase web page load time. It does make sense to add links manually with choice of your own anchor text. Why should we use plugin for this short work?

    Hello Harsh,

Again a great article. Every time I feel the need of any plugin or I look for any solution, I just start searching shoutmeloud and I never get disappointed. WordPress default search and interlink is the best solution for a blog with less no. of articles.

SEO smart link plugin seems useful but buying premium plugins for new bloggers like us is quite difficult. But, I’ll surely try it someday, once my blog gets popular. Informative Post indeed.

  11. Harsh,
Thanks for such a nice post.I wish to know your strategy on linking internally & externally .Which attribute is ideal? a do follow a or a no follow, and why?. Please guide me

  12. Hi.. Harsh.. I want to know about the post interlinking with same anchor text can use within another post with the same anchor text? Is it affected by google? Is it good or bad practice? Can you please help me.?

Avoid SEO Smart links – I had the premium version and it was fine at first, but no updates over time led to problems. Now zero assistance and it slowed my site right down. I removed the plugin and saw an instant improvement in page load times. Total waste on what is one of the most expensive plugins ever released.

    1. Harsh Agrawal

      @Jonathan
Thanks for the update & will remove it after testing it. Meanwhile, you can reach out to guys at @manageWP for this issue. They could probably help!

  14. Hey harish…I never tried any plugin before yet for internal linking, but am really impressed by using this plugin..I can see my work has been decreased a lot..Much thanks for sharing.

  15. Hello Harsh,
I did some post linking on my site, but i make them all open in new tab. Is this good or bad ?
And on what type of links should we do open in same tab and open on new tab ? please let me know

    1. @Bigyan
      Usually what I do is:

Make all external links open in new tab.
These days I started doing the same for internal link. One reason for this is increased number of mobile users.

  16. Md Shafiqul Islam

Wow that is what I was looking for. till today I was doing internal link manually but now I am going to use SEO smart links. Thanks HARSH.

  17. SEO Smart links does not appear to have a contact page. Does anyone know if smart links will work with thrive themes? I have also noticed that they have not updated their plugin on wordpress.org in two years.

    Thank-You

    1. I have to ask one more thing. plugins normally are not magic pills for success, so are there any options in smart links to use % number of anchor/links through out content? Repeat link using the same anchor link can be harm to your seo efforts.for instance once your reach a certain % on using that anchor, then it would not use that keyword again, just a thought, i think one of the biggest issues is using the same anchor/links over and over; someone once told me, never use the same anchor more then a few times.

  18. Thanks Harsh for this knowledgeable Post!

I never tried any plugin for interlinking Pages/Posts and right now as my Niche is only 11 months old, so I don’t want to use Paid Plugin.

As you said, “Interlinking also helps in On-page SEO”, I believe in this, because since I started interlinking Posts/Pages, the performance of my site is better than before!!

  19. I am using SEO Smart link Premium plugin from around 2 months and I can see my job has reduced drastically and I can now focus on other things as this plugin works like a charm.

  20. It would be really nice for a plugin to suggest for every word in a post if there is a post title containing that word (or a variation of that word). For example if my post has the word “weight” in it, so it would be nice to recommend the “How to Lose weight Fast” post title that I already have posted.
