Why Commenting Is Important

A few days back, my blogger friend, Abhishek, asked me a question:

“I just learned that you are an active commenter on many blogs. Your comments easily cross 100s within a week. Can you please tell me if there is any profit from commenting like traffic or relationship or SEO or anything else? Or do you comment out of your interest?”

Abhishek answered his own question in part by mentioning several important points related to the benefits of commenting.

To answer his question in detail, instead of replying only to him, I thought it would be best to write a detailed post on the importance of commenting for all bloggers and social media activists.

Backlinks

This is the most important reason to consistently comment on other blogs. If you find yourself complaining that your site is not getting enough traffic from search engines, it may be because your site does not have enough authority with those search engines.

When you comment on blogs, it helps create backlinks, which in turn generates traffic. Most of these links are no-follow links and thus, carry little value; however, the process is still helpful.

For newer blogs, commenting will help in the faster indexing of your blog.

Traffic

Drive traffic to your blog

Commenting helps drive traffic to your blog (because of the backlink).

However, it is important to post a valuable comment.

Take advantage of threaded WordPress comments. For example, reply to any question asked on any post, whether it is your own blog or someone else’s blog. Anything that adds value will be appreciated by everyone.

Generic comments like “Thanks..nice post!” will do nothing for your blog or your brand.

  • As always, value is key.

In order to take maximum advantage of commenting, follow these simple rules:

  1. Try to be the first to comment.
  2. Write detailed comments that are informative and valuable to the discussion.
  3. Make sure you have an image associated with your email address.

Commenting with your keyword as a name has a great advantage in terms of SEO, though many bloggers (including me) will see it as a spam and not accept such comments.

But if you comment without self- promotion, and add value to the post, your comments will be gratefully accepted.

Search Engine Optimization

We have long discussed the importance of SEO for bloggers. Comments can further assist you in optimizing your blog for search engines and take your blog to the next level.

By giving quality comments, you will be performing great offsite SEO, increasing your chances of building high-quality backlinks.

  1. Comment using your keyword as a name (might trigger spam).
  2. Comment on blogs with do-follow comment policies.

Once again, I cannot stress strongly enough that you need to add comments which add value and meaning to the original post.

Build Relationships

Build Relationships

Commenting is the best way to personally connect with any blogger.

While it can take time to create meaningful connections, once you are regularly commenting, you will be noticed by the site’s administrator and your co-bloggers.

The development of these connections can prove to be very helpful to you in the long term.

Summary

Commenting is a must for any blogger, and it will reward you in the form of:

  • Backlinks
  • Search Engine Optimization
  • Traffic
  • Relationships/Connections

If you’re wondering why you are not getting high volumes of traffic to your blog despite your high-quality content, give commenting a try and you will see the benefits in real time.

    Hey Harsh,
Thank you very much for this kind of writing. It will help me to improve my commenting knowledge.

Hello there, did realize compared to many other articles, this article has got lot of comments 🙂

My question is when do i start commenting. i mean if i am newbie will comments still workout for my blog. i would rather feel no show or high bounce rate if my blog wouldn’t offer good content.

Secondly, wouldn’t regular comments on article bore other viewers and in turn make less impact on your blog.

Thanks for beautiful article again. My first comment on any blog.

      Hi Saqib,

You can start commenting anytime whether you are new or old.

But as always say “Content is King” so again it depends on your content how it will engage the people.

And I don’t think so your comment will bore others unless your comment is meaningless.

      Thanks!

SaveNLike is right, commenting is also a way to share some extra knowledge about any topic so it will be always useful if it doesn’t contain anything wrong.

Hi Harsh, I have some questions in mind; Is any negative effect of comments? Commenting to other blogs to get backlinks, does Google sees it as spam link?
    Thank You

    1. Harsh Agrawal

      @Pawan
As far as I know, it doesn’t. However, it doesn’t really count as a backlink but it definitely pass some link juice. Try to focus on commenting on related blogs.

Very useful article. I’ve been reading various posts of yours, and I’ve gotta say you know your stuff!
I think it’s also vital to always reply to our own comments on our own blogs. This builds relationships with our readers, and I’m sure they are more likely to return and leave a valuable comment.

    Hi Harsh,
Thanks for all your posts. It is always good to share the direct question to you via post instead of just replying to the person who put a question to you.
When I comment I always put my name so I can brand and get my name out there.Tushar

Such a nice and advisable article. Blog commenting is one of the best strategies to rank your website however not all blogger will succeed. Patience is one of the best keys to this and also take that as a challenge and keep on going.

You make great points about why it’s important to leave comments on a blog. However, what I was really looking for when I found this blog post was how enabling comments on your own blog may or may not be beneficial. I.e., do comments left on your blog have any impact on your SEO?

Thanks for a well-written piece. As usual, I found the comments left by your readers equally valuable.

Harsh, thank you for a great article. I believe that commenting on blog posts also build brand awareness not only with the author but with people reading the comments as well. Do you feel that you will gain more benefits from an SEO point or brand awareness ?

    Thanks
    Dave

    1. Harsh Agrawal

      @Dave
According to me it’s more for Branding than the SEO.

Great article. I try and blog for each of the sites that I manage every single day. It has been such a great resource for me not only for information, because I am always trying to stay up-to-date with the certain niches that I am in currently, but it has driven an amazing amount of traffic to my sites, and helped them rank as far as SEO as well. Great thing to do for any business/blog/website etc.

    Hi Harsh,

Do you comment on blogs with high Spam Score detected by MOZ Open Site Explorer?

I am a bit confusing whether should I comment on these blogs.

As I am not sure whether my link detected on such high spam score blogs will affect my website spam score too.

    Thank you.

  12. Manu Khandelwal

Hey, I try to comment on blogs as much as possible. Can you tell me is it good to include a link of any post inside the comment or should I only use it in the website column?

    1. Harsh Agrawal

      Hey Manu,

You should not link your post in the comment as well as the website column unless and until it is really adding any value to the post or existing comments.

  13. Jeff Collins

Harsh, I am commenting here on your blog and I comment on a few others. Every now and then, I will see a click through to my site from a site on which I commented. It’s a good feeling to see that. I signed up for your ebook. Thanks

  14. Ahmer Faraz

    Dear Harsh

Another very useful post from you. Nowadays I am only spending time on your site and learning how to shout loudly.:)

Well commenting at first doesn’t appear to be that useful as you mentioned but going into technical details it provides logic.

I have also incidentally start to comment on you site.

Thanks for teaching the value of comments.

    1. Harsh Agrawal

      Hey Ahmer,

I am glad that you are finding ShoutMeLoud helpful. Keep reading and commenting 🙂

Commenting has helped my blog because I get traffic back but also the blog owners comment on my blog. When I comment I always put my name so I can brand and get my name out there. Greg Ellison

  16. Eden M.

I don’t comment much on blogs but I try to do my best. I didn’t think that commenting on blogs had that much impact on improving traffic but thanks for shedding light on that fact, Harsh.

  17. manju rai

Thanks for the post Harsh! i have a query about blog commenting. Is “comment love enable ” is good for blog or it will make my blog a spam. Please suggest.

  18. Nirmal Kumar

Yeah ! Blog Commenting is a great way to make backlinks. If you comment with value, those no follow links, will deliver you surprises . ( Surprises are not to be revealed 😛 Start commenting to reveal them )

  19. Abdul Razaq

Please give references, how to make comments that could be accepted by the owner of the blog?

  20. web4plan

Most of the comments I see here is all about dofollow and nofollow links. but the fact no one is saying that in terms of SEO also you need to have link diversity. If you only have dofollow link to your site google will see it as scam and penalize your site. On the other hand if you have both nofollow and dofollow links pointing to your site it will help you to rank faster . Blog commenting is not going to get you any dofollow links but the nofollow links you will get is going to supplement your dofollow links . The best way to go for do follow links is through PBN. I am sure Harsh will post an article on Private Blog Network soon.
