SEO For AI-Generated Content – What Google Says & What You Should Do?

AI-generated content is the top buzzing topic among marketers, bloggers, and SEOs. Most of us wonder about the current usage and how the future will look with so many AI tools being launched daily.

Many marketers were unhappy with the earlier version of AI writing tools, but the ChatGPT is making everyone turn their heads, even non-marketing people.

In the past two weeks, I have had many friends reach out to me to discuss and understand more about the implications of ChatGPT and the future of blogging and marketing with the advancement of similar AI tools.

A group of young marketers reached out to understand the impact of AI-generated content on SEO.

Some of the most common questions that this group has asked me are –

  • Will Google rank AI-generated content?
  • Should we be using AI writing tools for creating content?
  • How should we use AI Writing tools to create content that ranks in search engines?

And many questions on a similar line…

And to be honest, there is no straightforward answer, especially when we look at the implications of using AI-writing tools for SEO.

Update – It seems Google doesn’t hate Artificially generated content as long as it helps users and offers quality. I have updated the article with new information that might change your perspective about the AI generated content.

There is no doubt that AI-generated content is here to stay, and in this article and upcoming articles, I will help you make the most out of using AI tools to grow your business. That too without impacting your SEO, staying genuine to your ethical values, and keeping your client/customers/readers happy and satisfied.

What is AI-Generated content?

Many AI (Artificial Intelligence) content creation tools utilize computer programs and algorithms to create written or spoken text rather than by a human being like you and me.

AI-generated content is produced using natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning techniques, which allow computers to understand and mimic human language.

AI-generated content has a wide range of potential use cases, including:

  • Content creation for websites and social media: AI-generated text can help businesses and organizations create high-volume, high-quality content more quickly and efficiently.
  • Automated customer service: AI-generated speech and text can be used to respond to customer inquiries promptly and accurately.
  • News and information: AI-generated text can create news stories, summaries, and articles on various topics.

Here are some common examples of AI-Generated content –

  1. Blog posts
  2. Writing post title
  3. Creating an outline of the content
  4. Social media posts
  5. Email newsletter
  6. Product Description
  7. Ad copies for your marketing needs
  8. Landing pages

However, it’s important to note that AI-generated content is not perfect and still has many limitations, which I will discuss in the further section of this article.

I do feel that we are at the beginning of one of the most significant technological shifts in the history of content generation. How AI tools will reshape the world of content creation, only time will tell.

For now, let’s understand the impact of AI-generated content and SEO.

AI written content and Google SEO –

If your online business relies on the search engine to drive traffic, you should pay special attention to this section.

According to last year’s Google search central webmaster talk, in response, Google’s spoke person John Muller added –

  • AI-generated content still falls in the category of automatically generated content. If you are using machine learning tools to generate content, it is the same as you are simply just shuffling words or using translation tricks, or using synonyms (Hint: Article spinner tools).
  • The quality of content with these AI writing tools may be better than old-school tools, but it is essentially automated-generated content. And that meant it is still against the webmaster’s guidelines.

An Interesting takeaway from this conversation is – When John Muller was asked; Is Google able to understand the difference between AI and human content?

and his response was –

I can’t claim that. However, if the web spam team sees anything that is automatically generated, they will take action.

And if you ever tried a tool like ChatGPT or Jasper, you might have said first: WOW!

Honestly, for many topics, the response seemed to be way better than an average human being would answer. And this is when ChatGPT currently has lower data points than Google.

In November 2022 Google team cleared the doubts about Artificially generated content and impact on SEO.

Summary – Google is not against AI-generated content as long as it is reviewed and offers a better user experience. Creating low-quality content using AI tools that are not fact-checked and edited by a human being is a sure-shot way to get penalized by the Google web spam team.

The Cons Of Using AI-Generated content for SEO?

At the current state of AI writing tools, there are a few drawbacks (some of them seem impossible to solve) that you should be aware of –

  1. Quality and fact check – The quality and relevance to the user query seem to be the #1 issue with creating content using AI tools. Another significant issue is the authenticity of the content. If you rely solely on AI research tools, you might make mistakes that will be hard to spot and could damage your brand reputation.
  2. Plagiarism – AI-generated content may include sentences or phrases from other sources without proper citation. Not only it’s unethical, but it could also get the site penalized by search engines. You must ensure your article is run through a plagiarism checker tool or the AI writing tool offers a citation feature.
  3. Lack of human touch (may sound robotic) – The article written by AI writing tools are often sound too robotic and lack human emotions and touch. It may not be the case in the future, but in certain niches, this could be catastrophic for your brand.

AI-generated content & Search engine optimization –

Let’s be real; AI writing tools are evolving fast, unlike we have ever seen. They are not the generic Text spinner of the past, and they do write like humans.

The first version of AI writing tools was horrible, but what I see these days are mind-blowing.

Of course, they could never be (probably) as good as human beings, but they do have the capabilities to replace a significant amount of the human workforce. It may not sound nice to many of you, but this is the harsh reality of today’s time.

Some of my predictions around AI-generated content –

  1. I would not be surprised if a majority of bloggers and content creators will start taking the aid of AI writing tools to generate content.
  2. Expect many AI content detector tools to launch in the coming days.
  3. The role of content editors would evolve, and they should be well-versed to AI writing tools. I will share a list of such tools soon.
  4. As a freelance content writer, you should see AI writing tools as an assistant rather than an enemy. Like people opposed the idea of a tool like Grammarly, everyone who writes online uses it.
  5. As a blogger or content creator, use AI writing tools to generate ideas, concepts, outlines, and other tasks you would like to outsource. But never publish the output without editing and sprinkling your magic.
  6. I also believe that you should focus more on creating video content as it gives authenticity, builds trust, and adds a human touch. With time it would be tough to know who has written that piece of text content, and they might lose their value. Videos and Podcasts might replace text content to a greater extent for topics that require more trust and human touch. I don’t see AI replacing video content generation for a longer period of time, and that is one great way to make a difference in the world of content creators and blogging.
  7. Google E.A.T. – E-A-T means Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. E-A-T is part of Google’s algorithm and baked into Google’s Search Quality Evaluator Guidelines. It initially impacted the websites in the YMYL niche (Finance, Health). I would not be surprised if this extends to many other niches.
  8. As an individual, you should brand yourself as a niche expert in 1-2 topics that will stay relevant in the era of AI. Make sure your social media profile reflects what you are an expert in. Start seeing your social media followers as digital currency, and this will ensure you will stay relevant in the age of machine learning and Artificial intelligence.

Again, I don’t have a crystal ball 🔮 to predict the future of AI-generated content and SEO. Though I do predict that it will not go away, and it is a significant technological advancement. The best thing you can do for your career is to embrace the new and upcoming technology and integrate it into your business to stay relevant.

Now it is your turn to let us know –

  1. Hi Sir,
Thanks for sharing such a article. I never used these tools.

  2. Well, just as I don’t have a crystal ball either, I can’t also predict the future of AI contents being used in SEO.

However, I do feel that the digital world is evolving, and as such, the metrics used 10 years ago might be inefficient currently.

What am I trying to say?

Just as we’ve been creating contents for the past couple of years, who knows what may happen in the coming years.

    Who knows?

  3. I’m using AI tools for writing my social media posts.
I have also tried to generate outlines for my blog post although not been used yet.
    It’s a good tool.
Still, any machine can’t replace human beings. It should only be used as a supportive tool.

  4. I would say, that AI tools are positive for the industry if used by industry experts to produce more valuable content in the shortest time possible, only experts. The role of AI is to create value and convenience, ensuring you always use your field expertise to create value for your audience. My prediction is, AI tools will create the need for more data analysts for businesses to get over the edge. Getting your hands on accurate data for all aspects of the business will be the new puzzle.

  5. Okay according to me i think the AI is really a helpful tool to marketing teams or bloggers o even content creators
most of the time as content creators sometimes lack a good title for their videos but now with AI it is now better .

  6. Hi Harsh, I’ve been using Jasper AI for almost a year. I use it more as a starter on blog posts, to help me get going, or to improve a paragraph here or there.
I’ve also used it for the one-shot blog post on a new blog and here is what I’ve found:

*The research one for the content was old – I had to update it often.
*If you leaned politically right or left – it always leaned left.
*Some of the stats included were not correct as I researched them myself.
*When you asked for long-form content you didn’t always get it.
*The writing does get better the more you use it, it knows your own “voice.”

With all that said I do like to use it to help me write faster or generate “ideas” and paragraphs quicker. I do not recommend using it for an entire blog post.

I have yet to delve into the graphics portion of AI though I noticed yesterday Canva is doing it too – I was surprised to see that feature there. I’m looking for one to turn videos into blog posts – I’m sure it’s available or will be soon.

Thanks for your insights into this one Harsh. I also think it is ironic that Google is against it as they use AI too 🙂

  7. AI writing assisting tools are evolving and growing exponentially. This content creation technological industry is thriving and I believe that a lot of development and creative SAAS softwares will be created sooner to help deal with AI-powered generated content. Some SAAS tools of SEO, plagiarism checkers, analysis and AI-written content detection tools are already doing great job.

I, myself, tried several AI copywriting tools to help create different forms of content for our blog, social media and email marketing. It’s true that AI writing assistants can be of great help to content creators. However, the truth is it’s not a good choice for online beginners who have no experience or digital marketing skills to assist them polish the AI generated content.

I predict that Google will get smart enough to penalize sites that don’t consider creating human-firt content that solves their problems. AI copywriting softwares will stay effective only if they keep improving their services in parallel with what Google spam team are doing.

I believe that these softwares will keep improving and growing, and I expect the rise of different interesting AI detection tools to meet the huge production of fluffy and robotic AI-powered content.

I honestly see that bloggers, marketers, SEOs and web content creators have to adjust and adapt to this exploding trend. ‘Cause if not, it’s so probable to lose at this digital content creation and marketing game.

    Best regards!

  8. Hi Harsh,
Thanks for your POV on AI generated content. Yes, used a free trial of one of the AI tools, but didn’t find it helpful. It totally changed the way I write. TBH, next day when I read that AI generated content, it sounded like someone else written it for me.
Surely, we can use AI tools as an ad to generate content ideas and make an outline faster.

  9. AI is a good development and a great assistant. However, knowing how to make use of them as a writer is key.
Once the bot rewrites your article, you should edit and give it some human touch. In other words, make it better.

  10. Hi Harsh sir,
Well explained and indepth information about such tools that going crazy now a days. But what about quality vs full of spammy contents and blogs. Please suggest.
