9 Best Rank Tracking Tools To Check Google Keyword Rankings

One of the essential elements of SEO is picking the right keyword via Keyword research, making them rank & track the keyword position in the search.

It is absolutely necessary for a blogger or SEO professional to check their Google keyword ranking for target keywords. One of the most common mistakes bloggers and website administrators make is that they write and publish articles without targeting any keywords at all.

It takes only 10-15 minutes to use keyword research tools like Semrush or the KWfinder to find which keywords to use. Make sure you take advantage of these tools in order to accomplish this very important step!

Once you are finished writing an SEO-optimized post using your target keywords, your next task is to keep track of its search engine rankings and to continue building backlinks with the proper anchor text.

**Again, proper keyword selection is one of the main factors involved in achieving a better ranking in Google’s search engine.**

Every blogger must aim to use the keywords which users search the most, especially those keywords which will help your website show up on one of the first few pages of search results.

If you accomplish proper on-page SEO, chances are good that you will appear in the first 50 search results.

To improve your SEO, you must manage keywords properly so that you can find out which keywords are strong for your particular domain and which are not. This information allows you to work on using the strongest keywords, thus increasing your likelihood of getting a better ranking in Google and other search engines.

To accomplish this goal, you need a tool that can tell you where a specific keyword ranks in Google’s search results without manually going through hundreds of search results and pages.

To help you do this, we have compiled a list of some excellent free online tools to check your target keyword position in Google.

  3. SERPWatcher
  4. SE Ranking

Semrush is my favorite tool on this list as it is a complete solution for keyword checking.

You can enter your website URL or the individual URL of a blog post, and it will show you which keywords you are currently ranking for. You can further click on any resulting keyword to check keyword competition and other details.

It supports Google (you can select Google Search based on your target geographical region) and Bing search as well.

If you ever wonder, “What keywords do I rank for?”, Semrush has got you covered. Simply add your domain name in the URL field, and it would show you all the keywords that you are currently ranking for.

Here is how you can use the position tracking tool of Semrush.

  • Login to the Semrush account
  • Select position tracking under rank tracking
  • Save

Click on new position tracking (Top right) and enter your domain name and give it a meaningful name.

  • Save

Click on Create project and customized the settings according to your need.

Here is how Semrush makes it easier for you to start adding Keywords for rank tracking. You can add Keywords using one of these four methods:

  1. Connect your search console and pull up the keywords from there
  2. Manually enter the keywords
  3. Track the top Keywords that Semrush has already discovered for your domain name
  4. From file (*.txt, *.csv)
  • Save

You can also set it to send you weekly notifications of ranking changes. If you are offering SEO services to your client, this feature could save you a ton of time.

From the last step (Above screenshot), Semrush will start measuring your keyword rank position.

Overall, Semrush is an amazing tool for checking the position of keywords in search engines.

Did you see the latest update of Google Webmastertools? Their new interface has a pretty good rank tracker per keyword (over time) too. Do you think there is still a future for paid ranking trackers with this change?

  10. Sue

  11. Abhishek Shukla

Very useful list of tools , unfortunately many of these have limit on the number of keyword rank check

  12. Somiya Sultan

I have used some of these tools, as such they are good but still to get the results which I want I think SERC is the best. It gives out me desired results and gives me a perfect rank position without any issue.

  13. Sally

Free rank checkers are fine at the beginning, but once you have more sites it’s worthwhile to check out online rank checking services like serpranktracker.com and micrositemasters.com. They are paid services but do offer free accounts for up to 10 keywords. I’d choose them any day over the supposedly ‘free’ services. Free is not free when your time is money, and with a paid solution you save much more time in the long run.

A great list but do you know of ones that will tell you what keywords you are ranking for.

I have used them in the past and found out that I rank for some keywords totally unexpected. Can not remember the names of them though

    1. Amit

You can find out in Google Search Console (Google Webmasters) and other tools like aHrefs positions explorer and Semrush

      Hope this help

  18. Jasmine

These are great keyword ranking tools, I particularly like the first one in your list, Google Rank Checker. It produces rather accurate results I think.

  19. Sandeep

Yeah, these web tools are good – no doubt.. but you need to keep entering your links manually all the time to track the positions of your keywords.. which I would not want to do…

you should try Accuranker to track the status of your keywords in the long run…

Seriously I’ve used google monitor in the last one week and it looks too cool for a free tool.. you should try it!

    1. Rakesh Lal

I don’t agree with you Sandeep! According to my experience you don’t have to submit links manually or thru software’s for your website. You just have to focus on quality of the website not on quantity. I have worked with many small and medium sized websites and companies in India, USA, UK. It is not required to make backlinks or bookmark your websites. Point is that what is your major requirement, if you are looking only traffic then you may also go to traffic exchange website or targeted visitors network. But if you looking quality visitors, leads and sales then you have focus on your website (onpage SEO) first. That’s all.
