How to Point domain from Namecheap to Hostgator

One of the security tip which I often give to other blogger is host your domain and website on different registrar. For example, if you hosting your site on Hostgator, Dreamhost or Bluehost, use ShoutMydomain, Namecheap or Godaddy to host your domain. Long time back, I used to use Namecheap for hosting my domain and my sites are still hosted on Hostgator. This post is for all those who register domain using namecheap and hosting through Hostgator.

NameCheap domain to Hostgator Hosting:

So, first thing which you might like to do is to Login to your Namecheap account and purchase the domain. If you have already bought the doamin, click on the domain name, whose name server you want to point to Hostgator servers.

Click on Domain name server setup on next page and you will be taken to a page like below, where you need to add your hosting name server details. All you need to do is, find your webhosting NS and update the same here.

You can get your Hostgator name server details either on welcome hosting Email, or simply login to your cPanel account and on left hand side you will see your NS and I.P details. You just need to grab the NS and update in Domain name server information under namecheap, as shown in above screenshot.

make sure you add the Name server provided by hostgator for your account. Name server is included in welcome email from hostgator.

Adding addon domain with Hostgator.

Now, lets assume you have a namecheap account and you have a Hostgator account too. So in this case, we will buy a new domain from namecheap and add that domain as addon domain in HG server.

When you signup for hostgator , you can buy a domain name with them or mention your domain name you want to buy with them.

  • If you mentioned domain name there , changing DNS will complete the process
  • If adding another domain, follow the above step and continue reading

Login to your Hostgator control panel :

Click on addon domains under Domains

On the next page

  • Add domain name
  • Add FTP user
  • Add Root folder
  • Add password

On the next page you will get the confirmation stating : your domain name has been added.

I hope this step by step guide will help you to understand namecheap NS and pointing any other domain to Hostgator.

Thanks a bunch for this. One thing you might want to change in your screenshots is the first screenshot showing “Domain Name Server Setup.” It actually doesn’t say this until you make the change. Instead it shows something like Transfer Domain DNS with a different icon next to it. It’s still the same option under general and in the same order as you show above. Once you have changed where the domain name is pointed, it then shows it as you have it above. Thanks again for the help!

Thanks for the information. Do you know long it takes the re-direct/new domain to become the ‘true domain’ in the eyes of the search engines?
