The most common problem faced by non-native English speakers is the grammar part of English.

This is also true for me, as I’m not a native English speaker, and I tend to make lots of common grammatical errors in my writing.

A few days back, I hired a proofreader to find grammatical mistakes in my written articles, and I was awestruck when I discovered all of the silly errors I was making. Since then, I’ve been trying my best to learn and polish my writing skills.

I know it will take time, but I’m doing my best to work on it.

FYI: Hiring a proofreader is not cheap; you will end up paying a significant amount of money. Either hire a full-time editor or work on improving your English.

I have been learning and trying to get rid of the common English errors I make.

Some of the more common ones are:

  • Then vs. Than
  • There vs. Their vs. They’re
  • Space after comma (Required)
  • Space before comma (Never required)
  • Complex sentence structure

I know there are many other mistakes that I make, and I’m not ashamed of accepting them because it’s how I will learn, and ultimately improve my writing.

In this article, I have compiled a list of online tools that we can use to check our English grammar and make our written posts better.

8 Best Grammar Checker:

If you already know that your grammar is not that great, and you are motivated to work on it, you will surely get better in no time.

One of my blogger friends, Himanshu, read a few grammar books and took the help of tools like Grammarly to find grammatical errors. He improved his writing very quickly.

The problem with us (who have crossed adolescence) is to first unlearn, and then we can start to learn new stuff. Moreover, we constantly need someone (or something) to correct our mistakes.

1. Use Grammarly

This is one tool that you should start using right away.

This is the best online grammar checker tool I have seen come out in the past few years. I have been using Grammarly for months, and I’m constantly impressed with the quality of suggestions it offers. Check out our Grammarly review.

It tells me why a particular word, punctuation mark, or even comma is wrong. This helps me learn about the common grammatical mistakes I keep making.

It’s something that you should start using right now.

2. TripleChecker

TripleChecker is an interesting website that a lot of website owners would like. Triplechecker finds spelling errors, grammar errors, broken links, and that too automatically.

Once you add your website to TripleChecker, it automatically scans your website and suggests spelling and grammar errors. Here is what a report looks like:

As a website-level checker, this tool totally deserves your time.

3. Writer

Writer is relatively a new grammar checker app, but it seems to be better than all other predecessors. This tool incorporates features that would be loved by any small business where content takes center stage. Apart from all basic yet essential features like an online grammar checker, and spell checker, there are features which set Writer apart from it’s competitors.

For example, you can manage and publish a writing style guide website for your brand using the Writer app. This style guide becomes the guiding principle for your existing and new writers.

  • Writing style guide portal
  • Exclude specific websites
  • Works with WordPress

Writer offers a 14-day free trial (no credit card needed), and post that you can get a subscription for only $18/month.

Linguix is a modern AI-based easy-to-use grammar checker. It is available as a Chrome add-on, web app and is also available for Firefox and Edge browsers.

This tool comes as a free, and premium version. The free version is solid for beginners who are looking for a quick grammar and spell checker. The pro users (I’m one), the premium version offers many more features.

The above comparison chart shows the difference between free and premium versions of Linguix.  It also works with WordPress and Google Docs.

5. Hemingway

Hemingway is a popular writing tool, that does a lot more than checking English Grammar.

It helps you improve the overall readability of your article by providing actionable suggestions. It helps you to quickly identify, hard-to-read sentences and provides you readability grade. (See the above screenshot).

With a single click, you can also publish the article directly from the Hemingway editor to Medium or WordPress platform. Hemingway is available as an online app or you can download it for Mac OS and Windows OS.

6. Keep (and maintain) a notebook.

Another strategy that I follow is writing down all of the common mistakes I make, along with pointers that remind me how to correct them.

My notebook also helps me by looking back at the errors I used to make so I can see my progress.

I often spend time with my English major friend, and I take her help in improving my writing. I suggest you look around and find a friend or a tutor who can help you, too. It may take several weeks of effort, but it will be helpful all throughout the rest of your life.

7. Take online grammar tests.

If you enjoy learning online, I recommend you start taking online grammar tests. They will instantly show you your “grammar score”, and you will know what areas you need to work on.

You can use this free online tool for some grammar exercises.

8. Use After the Deadline.

After the deadline

This is one of my favorite tools to check for grammatical errors on the fly.

It offers various ways to integrate with your blog (including a WordPress plugin).

After the Deadline is owned by Automattic, which is the company behind WordPress. Though it’s not as good as Grammarly, for the price tag of $0, you shouldn’t mind giving it a shot.

BONUS:

If you are using the two tools that I’ve mentioned above, you shouldn’t need this one. But it’s always good to add another useful tool to your list.
