Welcome to the first version of ShoutMeLoud interview in which I’m featuring Ileane Smith, who is a popular blogger and the owner of Basic Blog Tips. She started blogging five years ago, and she also has a YouTube channel with over 150 video tutorials. In this interview, you will get a good insight into blogging and Ileane view on many aspects of blogging. Here we go..
Ileane Smith Sharing Her Blogging Wisdom
How can we reach core competency in blogging?
One thing is very important in reaching core competency in blogging. Think of yourself as if you were like a baby. You know that one day you will learn how to walk and talk, but it takes time. You have to watch your Mother and Father to see how they do it. You can’t expect overnight success. First you watch and learn then you begin to practice. You might fall, but you keep trying until you finally take your first steps.
It’s the same way with starting a blog. You have to blog school before you can become a skilled blogger. What I mean by that is, spend your time reading some of the top blogs in your niche. Follow by example, but don’t be a copycat. You still need to practice and keep writing in your words so you can gain skills in your craft.
Take the time to do a lot of blog commenting and each day you should try to make your comments more detailed and specific. This is how you will develop your writing style. I find that a big problem is some bloggers just want to imitate others instead of speaking in their voice. The only way you can develop your blogging voice is by writing and reading the works of other more experienced bloggers.
It’s been observed that as soon as a jazzy and big-fuzz term called “SEO” is fired, the webers start thinking and optimizing their content for a search engine rather than for humans. Your insights.
You have to think of it as having multiple touch points to connect with your readers. Don’t just limit yourself to blog posts and the written word. Develop content in different formats such as podcast, videos, slide deck presentations, infographics, etc. You should also dedicate a big chunk of your time doing outreach with other bloggers because ultimately your blogging friends and your community will always be there even when Google lets you down.
A major failure in your life which motivated you to become and because of which you are “What you are”.
When I was younger, I spent a lot of time trying to please others. I think this happens to a lot of us, especially women. But I found that in reality, the best way to please others is to please yourself first. I knew that a lot of my offline friends would be upset and feel neglected when I started spending a lot of time online but it was something that I felt compelled to do, and so I’m glad this time I decided to please myself first. As time goes by my friends are happy to see that I am happy and anytime they need something done on online, I’m the first one they call. 🙂
What are the tools you are using for your Video Blog? ( Youtube Channel)
I use a tool called Screencast-o-matic to record my YouTube videos. I have a Logitech C920 webcam, and I use the Webcam settings app for Mac. The mic I have is the Samson C03U condenser microphone. When I need to edit the audio, I use Audacity, which is a free audio editor. Sometimes I use Animoto to mix things up and add some music and animation now and then. Lately, I started experimenting with YouTube’s own Video Editor, and I’m getting some good results.
How do you interweave these two terms “A great content” and “Search Engine Optimization”?
I look at it this way, as long as you provide content that people are searching for, and you use good keywords in your titles so that people can find that content you have accomplished both goals.
Be helpful and try to solve problems that your readers are facing.
Apart from blogging what activities you are engaged into and what are your plans?
Right now I am concentrating on creating more in depth courses on sites like Udemy and Skillfeed. Of course I will continue to create tutorials on YouTube as well. Who knows, maybe one day I will be an instructor on Lynda.com!
What is the next expected evolution or revolution in the digital world?
I see the digital world moving more and more towards visual content and less concerned with technical aspects of Search Engine Optimization. You can see this trend happening now with sites like Pinterest, Instagram, Tumblr and even the new site Tsu. It will be harder for marketers to get their message across to people via emails because everyone will be looking towards developing apps and wearable tech.
Podcasting will also become more mainstream as people move away from listening to the radio while they’re commuting.
I never listen to the radio anymore when I’m in the car. I’m always listening to podcasts.
