How to Use Facebook List Feature

Facebook list is a useful feature to manage your Facebook feeds and friends. From a Blogger POV, I usually manage list in a way, that I can keep an eye on important updates and at the same time I stay connected to my personal friends.

In this guide, we will learn and understand everything related to Facebook list like how you can manage friends list on Facebook using list feature and how to delete and do other crazy stuff with Fb list feature.

Before we move ahead, I should tell how and why I started using Facebook list feature. If I didn’t do anything with my Facebook newsfeed, it would actually  be a huge waste of time to watch. As I’m writing this, I have about 1350 friends, and let me tell you that it’s a mess. Many of my friends are family, friends from school, people I just know, and many are people I’ve met online and business associates. There are a lot of different people with all sorts of interests. And they’re using Facebook for their personal gain (well, we all are).

If I didn’t do anything about my Facebook newsfeed, I would see all the different games they’re playing, all the different lame quotes, read stories about what they’ve eaten, and how great their husbands and children are, I would read things I have no interest of reading.

I believe that no matter how many interesting friends you’ve got on Facebook, you should do what I’ve done. It makes sense and you’ll save a lot of time.

Filter your friends into categories

The first thing I’ve done is to create lists of my friends. For instance, I’ve created a list called Internet marketing, and I’ve added all my friends who are writing about or are involved in Internet marketing to this list. Now, when I’ve got this list, I can send the people on this list an email (and remember that I know that they’re involved in Internet marketing) and I can watch their news feed. Also, if you are using Facebook send button, your lists will be handy to send interesting article to targeted people.

Let me show you exactly how I manage my Facebook friend list using Fb lists feature:

How to create Facebook list ?

  • Click on Lists friends in the left sidebar(Lower) and it will open  this page. On the next page, you can all the current lists and you can create new lists too.  Here is a direct link to access your Facebook list page.

  • Save

Now, you can click on the list and give a name and description to your list.

  • Save

Once your list is created, on the next page you can add or remove friends in the list. Along with your Facebook friends, you can also add Facebook pages, subscription (users you are subscribed to on Facebook)

  • Save

How to use Facebook list?

Your Facebook list is ready. Just click on the name of the list in the left sidebar, just below friends.

  • Save

After you’ve clicked on the name of your friend list, you’ll see the newsfeed only from people within the list.

  • Save

To me, this makes a big difference. No matter what I’m looking for, and no matter why I’m using Facebook, if I don’t filter my newsfeed into categories I’m really wasting a lot of time. If for some reason, you want to add any particular friend into a list, you can go to his profile, click on friends and add or remove him from any of your friend lists.

  • Save

In recent Fb update, Facebook has added couple of lists by default. For example, there is a list call “Close friends” when you add a friend into this list, you will get notification for your friend every updates. I would suggest add only your close friends or person whose Fb status updates, you want to track.

How to delete Facebook list?

So far, we have learned how to create Facebook list and how we can add people into our lists. Now, suppose you have created some extra lists or you decided to delete couple of Facebook lists, here is a quick tutorial to remove such unused or orphaned Fb lists.

  • Go to your Fb profile.
  • Click on More under Lists on left hand side.
  • Click on name of the list which you want to delete.
  • On the list page, under manager list you will see an option to “delete list”.

See the screenshot for better understanding:

  • Save

I highly recommend you to start working on lists from today. This will be really handy to manage friend list in long run when your Fb circle will grow. Also remember, you can’t delete default lists, so if for the certain Facebook list, you don’t see an option to delete the list, there is no need to panic. Such lists will be automatically hidden which you are not using.

Somehow, after Google+ circles concept, Facebook has made its list feature way better. Anyways, do let us know if you are using Facebook list feature or not?

  1. Hey Jens,

Wonderful article. I was facing the same kind of problem but not knowing we can do this. I am having friends group wise @ my Orkut account but not on Facebook. I guess this is really time saver.

    1. Hey Jaydip,

Thanks a lot. This simple trick saves me a lot of time, and I find it a lot easier to stay focused when I use the list feature.

Thanks a lot 🙂 Facebook is really powerful when it comes to business and marketing. The problem, at least to me, is that it can also be a waste of time. So many people are using it, and it’s information overflow. That’s why it’s important to filter the information.

I use the Facebook list feature for segregating my friends but I am disappointed with Facebook because it allows you to mail only 20 people at a time.

So if you have IM friends and you want to send them an offer or invite them for a webinar…. I have to send mails to 20 friends at a time.. and then repeat the process. Makes the whole purpose of making a list fail…

  4. Thanks, Jens – it is amazing that Facebook does not promote lists better, as they make Facebook a much more effective communication tool.
