5 Awesome Tips To Set Guest Posting Guidelines

Guest posting is beneficial for both: Blogger and the Guest blogger.

If you are a blogger, it helps you to get a free awesome content and second for guest blogger it offers free backlink and free Blog branding. It isn’t necessary that you will gain serious traffic and rankings unless the guest post is of high quality and out of the box. And if you have a proper planning for Guest blogging marketing, you can drive not only serious traffic but also very targeted traffic.

Now, a few days back here at ShoutMeLoud, we talked about How Google sees Guest post links, and it made me write this article about Guest posting guidelines.

Having a guest post submission guideline page will help you to lower down the chances of getting spam and useless article, moreover when you reject a blog post, you can simply direct users to your guest post guideline page to tell them what they have done wrong and what kind of guest post you accept.

How to Set your Guest Posting Guidelines?

First thing first, get yourself a landing page for your guest post guidelines. For example, check out ShoutMeLoud guest post page and you will notice that this page covers all important points for guest post submission and link to the registration page.

There is no doubt, letting the user submit the guest post from WordPress dashboard helps you to get more content, and moreover it helps you to save time.

The down side of keeping your WordPress registration open is letting spam users sign up.

Now, start with your guest posting page:

Give a reason for users to submit a guest post to your Blog. Inform them about the advantages they will be getting with guest post submission like:

  • Branding
  • Free Backlinks
  • Any other benefits like revenue sharing or monetary advantages
  • Your Blog Stats
  • How many guest Bloggers have Participated

This will encourage users to submit more article, and now it’s time to write down the guidelines for guest post submission.

Original and unique Content is king:

This statement is true as “Content is King.” The more content you have the more traffic you will get. This is true only when you are publishing high-quality content on your Blog. It doesn’t matter if it’s written by you or a guest author, but being an Editor it’s your role to filter between good and bad guest post.

Accept only unique content which is specially written for your Blog audience. Make sure; the article is well written, formatted and well researched. You can encourage users to add YouTube videos, Slideshare slides or unique images to make the article more attractive.

If you do not set this guideline people will take benefit of this as they will become greedy to earn a backlink. They might even submit copied/spun posts that will affect your website’s reputation and rankings. Clearly mention that there is no room for spam, copied posts and unoptimized content on your website.

No Affiliate and Referral Links in guest post:

The second guideline must be no submission of referral /Affiliate links in posts. If you allow guest bloggers to submit referral links in posts then this may let your visitors have a negative effect on your website.

Since, the motto of guest post submission will change from branding and backlink to make mullah out of your quality blog. Moreover you can’t limit what Affiliate link will go and what not, it can take down the reputation of your blog.

Suppose if any visitor gets trapped in this referral links and later he knows that he has been cheated then he will accuse your website for being cheated and may never visit again. So seconds guideline is “A Big No To Referral Links”.

Website Niche :

Only accept guest posts which are similar to your Blog niche, to avoid any SEO penalty like Penguin. You can mention about what kind of backlinks do you offer and what kind of niche you link to.

If you really want to control SEO spam of guest post link, make sure you offer branded backlink instead of SEO optimized backlink.

This will ensure, that guest blogger who are submitting article to your blog is doing it for exposure and not just for a backlink. Moreover, with this guest posting guidelines, you will avoid getting guest post request from an unfamiliar niche.

Word Limit:

High word count doesn’t guarantee that the post is of high quality, but it ensures that the post covers all the important points related to the topic. You can set any word limit for the guest post: Starting from 700. Though, if you are one of those who like to accept only quality guest post, I would recommend to set it as high as minimum 700-word limit.

  1. Guest posting is good for any blog. But accepting too many guest post may be harmful for your blog because you readers visit to your blog to read your article, but not guest posts.

  2. Thanks Abishek, this makes a lot of sense. I knew it was not a good idea to accept affiliate links, but I did not know exactly why. Now you have given me the words to understand that situation better.

I think it is a good idea to list the incentives of blog posting first, before the guidelines.

One thing I personally like to do is to be the one to reach out to other bloggers and offer them a chance to do a guest post. That way, I am already familiar with their work.

On the other hand, you have provided important guidelines to limit the number of people seeking to post on my blog. Thank you.

  3. guest posts are one of the best way to create awareness about a blog or site, the guidelines which you mentioned are absolutely bang on, but quality is always generic. You can have a fresh and unique post without any links but still quality may not be that good.
    Thanks for sharing this.

  4. Andrew Richard

I am running a video blog and I want to accept videos from users, can you please tell me how i can draw the guideline for submitting videos and how i can attract people to submit videos. My blog is in its early stage,if possible please look at my submit page and give me feedback.

  5. It is very important to set guidelines. The most important is the website niche. We should not accept guest posts if the guest blogger submits a guest post whose blog is of different niche no matter the post submitted by him is related to our blog.It can affect your audience.
