GoogleWebLight For Slow Internet – What It meant for Bloggers?

Have you started seeing traffic coming from GoogleWeblight in your stats? If yes, you are not alone, as many webmasters around the globe have noticed the same.

You will keep seeing more of traffic coming from GoogleWeblight, and in this article I will share everything a blogger & a webmaster need to know about this latest addition by Google.

GoogleWeblight is an initiative by Google to improve the browsing experience of millions of users who are on slow internet speed. Typically for countries like Indonesia, India & Brazil where a majority of users are on 2G or very slow internet connection.

It is also being called as Streamlined lite version of mobile search. This feature will work only on Android devices & on chrome browser. Whenever a user is using Google search on Android powered Chrome browser, and the browser detects the slow connection, the lite version of mobile search will automatically kick-in.

It will transcode the page to light version, and will help webpages to load way faster.

What Streamlined lite version of the mobile search meant for a user?

For an end user it meant, the webpage will load 4X faster and 80% of less bandwidth consumption.

The key factor here is, faster rendering of the web page, which will help millions of users around the less developed & developing countries to browse more pages, and less hassle with slow loading of the page.

Here is a side by side comparison of the page load when using normal Google search & GoogleWeblight. This test is done on 2G connection (about 35kbps speed):

Users can opt out for lighter version anytime and go to the actual version of the page by clicking on “View original”.

Here is a screenshot of the lite version of ShoutMeLoud. You can click on this link to see it live on your browser.

When I tested ShoutMeLoud.com load time on transcoded & without transcoded version using Webpagetest, the difference is about 90%.

What Did GoogleWeblight mean for bloggers?

As a blogger you need to know that; when a user will visit your site via Google search (On Android device using Chrome browser & slow connection – Yah! lot of factors), user will see a lite version of your web page.

All the elements will be removed & user will be presented with the content only. The good thing is; these lite versions of the page will work with AdSense, Sovrn & Zedo.

If you are an ad network, you can apply for being whitelisted by using the form link on this page.

You can opt out of GoogleWeblight (That means the only regular page will be served) anytime by setting the HTTP header “Cache-Control: no-transform” in your page response.

Google will not transcode the page when they see the above HTTP header. Though I suggest not to do that, as millions of users are coming online from the remote area, where high-speed internet is not available.

Having your transcoded version of the site served to them meant, your content is reaching to a complete new audience.

Few important points:

  • Google analytics will not track the stats of transcoded pages, so that page can load quickly. You can see the server logs or using WordPress.com stats to see the traffic coming from GoogleWeblight.
  • Pages will be transcoded only for mobile device & not for desktop or tablet.
  • For any issue or feedback, you can mail to [email protected]
  • If you decide to opt out of transcode, Google will label this page in the search results as slow loading page.
  • Sites which requires cookies, or videos sites can;t be transcoded at this moment.

As an end user & as a publisher, I find this new feature to be of great help. I live in India, and travel to many remote areas around the year, where internet connection is slow.

I understand how frustrating it is to wait for minutes to load a page. Many web browser like UCweb is popular in India, as it helps users to load the page faster on slow bandwidth.

Watching the example youtube video, I can’t understand why it would take 70+ seconds to load the original over the “optimized” version which basically only removed the Google logo. Is Google suggesting their own logo is a data hogging web element? Yes, I get there might be other images below in the article but you shouldn’t be faced with a blank white screen for so long unless there is an element at the beginning that is not optimized or coded correctly such as a image or other non-text element lacking width or height tags so it needs to load first before any text or other elements can be rendered after (hence the long wait white screen).

  6. Harsh i kept you as my role model.

  7. Hi Harsh thanks for sharing this. Two quick questions –
    1. since ga is not loaded on these pages to save space, does it mean there will be a drop in traffic in ga?

    2. If ga is not loaded why source still shows googleweblight.com in ga.

    Thnx

    Harsh,

Thank God I saw this post on time..

I had been seeing the traffic from Google weblight for the past 1 week and really thought its just a robotic spam site sending me fake traffic.

I read about it too as there were many blogs that gave the notion of filtering such spammy sites in GA (not google weblight specially though). I was about to take it off my GA even 😛

I a thanking my stars that I read this article .. Woohoo..

    1. Yes you are right.. i also feel fake traffic on my site

But how to put this code and where?

      Please any one help me

        Hey Md,

You can opt out of GoogleWeblight (That means the only regular page will be served) anytime by setting the HTTP header “Cache-Control: no-transform” in your page response.

  10. Jasbir Kurana

    Hello,
How it impact adsense revenue. Should I add googleweblight(dot)com to authorized site list in adsense, If it not added, Will I get adsense revenue or not ?

    1. Harsh Agrawal

      @Jasbir
It might impact AdSense earning, as placement would not be the same. You don’t need to make any changes or as GoogleWebight as an AdSense authoriezed site.

  11. Google is forcing us to access their cached pages, even when accessing from high speed cable connections. There is no way to disable it by default. That is not fair, I dont want to click on view original for every site. I’m searching for an alternative search engine right now

I also noticed googleweblite in status of my websites and a lot of increase in traffic. But here is the drawback of this feature – adsense revenue decreased a lot…almost a half due to selected ads on the mobile page. Page RMP decreased to half. Any one noticed it ?

    1. Yes, same here.. adsense rev started decreasing by 50%.. I have found a solution to address this and already hired a tech guy who is working on it.. This approach is adopted by a topnotch site.. I think we should work together to fix this problem.. do let me know..

      1. Jasbir Kurana

Rishi, have you another idea for this except using “no-transform” header. If you have, will you like to share. Because, Google labelled site as slow to load which being cause to loose many visitors.

        1. @ Jasbir – I thought we can use a redirection script. When the user agent is google web light, script actually rephrases the page i.e. actually loading the original page. However it never worked.

Can you pls share the code for no-transform as this is the only option i think we have..

    2. Jasbir Kurana

You are right Teach Matters, My income reduce to half also and when I add no-transform header , income comes to normal stage !

      1. @ jasbir – Since you have added no transform header, has google labelled your site as Slow site/Takes more data ?

  13. Hi Harsh – Can anyone help me to insert Cache-Control: no-transform header in a wordpress site without a plugin ? I believe it can be inserted in .htaccess or function.php

  14. Thanks for the article Harsh. I was considering GoogleWebLight as referral SPAM. Just before putting it in. HTACCESS file I decided to google and landed up here. Thanks for the article.

  15. Hi, Harsh.
I’m from Brazil. Very usefull your post and your website. Thank you and congratulations for your job.

  16. Earnings decreased definitely since googleweblight start. What may be the reason. Decrease is not much though. It’s good if more people are able to reach website. More traffic shud be aim. Earnings are byproducts.
