How to Disable JetPack Modules or Completely Remove Jetpack from WordPress

Disable JetPack Modules on WordPress
  • Save

I have already shared about Jetpack WordPress plugin, which is one of the best WordPress plugins.

Jetpack is a multi-purpose plugin, which is developed by Automattic (WordPress parent company) and offers different modules to enhance WordPress features. Some of the notable features of this plugin are:

  • WordPress.com stats integrated
  • Contact form
  • Jetpack Comments
  • Social media sharing
  • Jetpack Autopublicize
  • Mobile theme
  • After the deadline integration
  • Subscription feature
  • Brute force protect
  • VaultPress for WordPress backup (Paid feature)

These are just a few of the features offered by JetPack, and there are many more features you can explore once you activate the plugin.

Today, I was working on optimization of my WordPress blog, and the first thing I did is: I used P3 plugin profiler plugin to find out, which plugin is taking maximum resources from my server. I have already told you, that using too many plugins will slow down your blog.

Why deactivate unused Jetpack plugin module?

Now, here is a screenshot of P3 plugin profiler plugin, after running the test with a few unused modules on.

And this is the report generated by P3 plugin profiler plugin, after deactivating all non-essential modules.

You can see, after deactivating a few Jetpack modules, my plugin load time, plugin impact, and MySQL query decreased, and on medium or high traffic websites, it’s a notable difference, as server load decreases. So, I believe this makes it clear, how essential it is to disable the unused Jetpack modules.

How to disable individual Jetpack modules:

You need to go to Jetpack settings, and from there you can activate or deactivate the modules directly. Simply hover over the modules, and for activated modules, you will see an option to deactivate, and for the deactivated modules you will see an option to activate.

Here is a screenshot for the same, and after that list of modules that I’m not using:

  • Save

Here are the list of modules, that I have deactivated:

  • Publicize
  • Notifications
  • Jetpack comments
  • Post by Email
  • Carousel
  • Sharing
  • VaultPress
  • Gravatar Hovercards
  • Contact form (I use another contact form plugin)
  • WP.me short links
  • Tiled galleries
  • Custom CSS
  • Beautiful Math
  • Infinite scroll
  • Photon
  • Mobile Push Notification

I know that’s a big list of modules, and if you are using the latest Jetpack WordPress plugin, I will suggest you check your Jetpack settings once and deactivate unused modules.

How to Disable and remove Jetpack completely:

Now, if you want to remove Jetpack completely and also get rid of all the tables added by it in your WordPress database.

Here is what you should be doing:

  1. Deactivate the Jetpack plugin
  2. Delete the plugin
  3. Install Advanced Database Cleaner plugin
  4. Run a scan for orphan tables
  5. Delete all Jetpack related table.
  6. You can find a detailed tutorial about Advanced database Cleaner plugin here.

If you have any queries regarding the Jetpack plugin, feel free to let me know via comments.

Thanks, once again really useful. I’m testing turning individual modules off and its really helping with pagespeed. Now I just need to research alternatives for each element of Jetpack!

Can you tell me: What happens to Wp.me shortlinks if I deactivate Jetpack entirely. Do they remain? Or revert to the original permalink or ‘slug’? Or are those links screwed up?

Also, is Jetpack Lite a better choice for reducing plugin load time, plugin impact, and MySQL queries etc?

Nice article Harsh, we’re using Jetpack comments that we find more User-friendly, but as you pointed to, there are a lot of modules that we find useless but slowing down the time load.
