Do you want to show targeted ads based on content in your WordPress sidebar? Do you want to increase your affiliate sales with targeted promotion?
If your answer is yes, welcome my Shouter friend to the world of smart bloggers.
Properly targeting your visitors is an important step in advertising, increasing conversion rate or simply enhancing the user experience of your website. It does not matter whether your target is to promote an affiliate offer, build up your email list, offer a free download or anything else, you really need to pinpoint your target audience and address them accordingly.
Leading advertisers like Google and Facebook are making the most of targeting their users and that’s why they are the leaders. If you want to achieve that level of success with your website, you need to apply precise targeting methods as well.
Now, where do you usually display ads, promotions or sign-up forms? There are two most popular ways here –
- Displaying a popup,
- Using widgets.
The first method, using popups, has gone through a lot of experiments and allows you to target specific pages, posts, locations, browsers and many other things. But is it the same with WordPress widgets?
The answer is no. Quite surprisingly, the widget display options have remained almost the same since the beginning. WordPress Themes come with some predefined widget areas. You place widgets on those areas and they are displayed throughout the website. There isn’t any option to display a widget to a specific group of people, page or post.

The last section includes two interesting options. Here, you can choose to display the widget only to the logged in and/or logged out visitors.
All the options of the display logic section are available in the exclusions section as well. If you want to hide the widget from any of these posts, pages, post types, archives, page templates etc., you can do that from the respective tabs of the exclusions section.
After making all the changes, you can save the settings as a display template. By doing this, you can replicate the same settings for other widgets with a single click only.
