WordPress started out as a blogging platform, but these days, it’s a full-fledged content management system (CMS). Because of this, many people (including many businesses) opt for this powerful and simple to use piece of software. Here are some of the benefits of WordPress.

There are many different website management packages out on the market. From Joomla to Dot Nuke, each has its place in the world of website makers. The problem for many of us is that we just don’t have the technical expertise or the capital to make some of these solutions work for us.

Luckily, WordPress is free and doesn’t require a lot of technical knowledge.

WordPress is a robust content management system that powers many online businesses. It’s estimated that 33% of all websites use WordPress (January 2020).

Before we get into the distinct advantages of WP, let’s bust this popular myth:

WordPress is way more than a just a blogging platform. You can use it as a standard website, social networking site, E-commerce site, and whatever else you want to do with it.

If you think any of these cost a lot of money, you’d be wrong. Nowadays, for around 200$, you can get a professional WordPress website built for you. Or, for much less, you can build one yourself.

While WordPress is not inherently SEO-friendly, there are very easy ways to fix that. The number of SEO extensions and plugins that exist on the WordPress platform make it easy for anyone to easily enhance their SEO with little work required.

I recommend using Yoast. It’s the best, and it’s easy to configure.

Even if you’re unfamiliar with content management systems and you don’t have a programmer or designer on staff, you can build a professional site with WordPress.

In terms of administration, WordPress is significantly easier to use than any of its competitors. The administrative interface is much more intuitive, adding content is quick and simple, and installing plugins takes very little effort.

With WordPress, you don’t have to be dependent on a web designer. You can log in to your dashboard and add, edit, or remove anything with a few clicks. The WordPress dashboard is easy to understand and easy to use.

3. Quick Installation

Most of the major web hosting providers offer a simple, one-click installation of WordPress.

You don’t need to worry about downloading the WordPress installation files and using an FTP server to upload them. Simply visit your hosting provider’s control panel, click “Install WordPress” and within a few minutes, you’ll be up and running.

No software package is completely free from every vulnerability, of course. However, WordPress is known for being decently secure. There have been only a handful of security exploits for WordPress over the years, especially when compared to some other website management systems.

But there are some necessary things you should do to ensure your safety (like taking regular backups):

5. WordPress Plugins

There are literally thousands (maybe even millions) of WordPress plugins. No matter what you want to do, chances are pretty good that there’s a plugin to do it.

There are plugins to:

These options let you customize your site in whatever way you want to, and all with the click of a button.

Here are a few handy plugins for WordPress:

6. Strong Community Support

When compared to other platforms, this is possibly the greatest benefit of using WordPress.

As I mentioned earlier, 27% of all websites in the world use WordPress. Because so many people are using it, a large community has been allowed to grow and flourish.

If you ever need help with something, you can find plenty of ebooks, blogs, online tutorials, message boards, and more, all devoted to helping you get the most out of WordPress. Whatever question you have, someone out there in the community knows the answer and will help you out (probably for free).

The community aspect of WordPress is one of the most valuable and rewarding parts of using this CMS.

7. WordPress Updates

Because WordPress is open source (and because so many people are using it), it’s constantly receiving feedback and improvements from the design and development community. WordPress receives regular updates, each of which fixes bugs or offers new features and functionality.

It’s always staying updated and it’s always improving. It’s not some static piece of software that gets old in a few months.

WordPress is always cutting-edge.

8. WordPress Theme Customization

Your online business needs to have its own look.

WordPress offers plenty of opportunities for customization.

In addition to plugins that can help make your site unique, there are literally thousands of templates out there that you can use for your WordPress site. Customizing a given template is relatively easy, although it does require some knowledge of CSS.

If you don’t possess that knowledge, there are many talented and qualified designers who can do it for you… for a price.

Here are some noteworthy WordPress themes to check out:

There are also marketplaces like Elegant Themes which offer a large selection of themes for anywhere from $0-$100. If your small online business doesn’t require a fancy custom design, you can always pick one of their pre-designed themes which will suit your need.

9. Speed

While WordPress isn’t necessarily the fastest website software on the market today, it is less bulky than some others. The key here is to make sure that there aren’t design elements in your template that are slowing you down, or that you don’t have specific plugins that are mucking things up.

Moreover, Google made it clear that they consider site loading time as one of the signals for better ranking.

By using a CDN and cache plugins, you can make your WordPress website load really fast.

Here are a handful of tutorials which will let you optimize your WordPress site for faster loading:

Is WordPress Right For You?

WordPress is simply the superior choice for many online endeavors.

That said, there are some exceptions.

If you have a background with Drupal or Joomla, for example, you may want to stick with those platforms and leverage that knowledge. Also, WordPress may not be as intuitive as other platforms if you just want to create a simple blog.

To know whether WordPress is truly right for you, you need to identify exactly what you want to do with your online presence. Consider all of the features and functions you want – forms, online catalog, online shopping cart, connectivity with social media, etc.

Systematically go through that list, and do some legwork to see if there are WordPress plugins that can do the things you want to do.

Chances are pretty good you’ll find that WordPress is right for you.

Do let us know which platform you would recommend for your personal or business website. Do you use WordPress or something else? What other benefits of WordPress can you think of?

Hello Greg, Really a great article on the benefit of WordPress. I have no doubt that WordPress is the best CMS to use for any technical as well as non-technical person to create a business website or a blog. However, I am surprised to see the title and URL of this blog post. Both are very different and not related to each other. URL says the benefit of WordPress for the business website while heading in the blog says the benefit of WordPress for Blog. Is it intentional?

Great post…I like the media library. It allows me to use my photo’s and graphics not only on my site but all over while it links back to my site. Word Press has it all. With all the types of plug-ins available you can create any site you want that can look and function as different as people are. I also like the fact that I can create a blog(s) easy and fast and linking them together like a site map. Way cool stuff. It allows one to have many blogs for the complex person who likes to have many things going on, like me. My next blog will be all about my music I create. WordPress Rocks…and it is sooo inexpensive to have and run.

great post; I use wordpress as a way of keeping my static page up to date. I use feedburner’s rss to html gizmo to embed the most recent posts from my wordpress blog in my website’s homepage. The additional web traffic and respect from google, yahoo, bing, etc has really improved my overall traffic. glad to see you are letting others in on how awesome wp can be. take care, max
