“…the processes that determine the flow of life around us did not begin when we were born, nor will they end when we die.” – Michael A. Singer

Few days back, I was reading this book called “The Surrender Experiment” which is an extraordinary story of Michael A.Singer, a multimillionaire’s journey & experiment on letting go of his personal experiences and simply let life call the shots.

The Surrender Experiment

After reading the book, I realised how true is it that life rarely unfolds exactly as we want it to…

How many times have you made plans, predictions or tried to control situations but life has taken its own course?

If you think that surrendering means giving up on your life or not working towards your goals or dreams or quitting, it’s not true. What it actually means is letting go of yourself, not life.

Surrender means to stop procrastinating, to stop trying to control things, obsessions, problems or not being anxious. It simply means to let go of your personal preferences and embrace what the world has to offer. We all are hardwired to call anything as ‘I like this” & “I like that”. The moment we like one thing out of many, we stop universe to let us enjoy the rest of things. More on it later!

Albert Einstein Quote ShoutMeLoud.com

It’s your choice whether you want  to swim with the flow of water or against it. I think flowing with the currents is more harmonious, balanced and uniform. From past few months, I have been practicing to surrender and I have never felt so free and peaceful.

How to surrender and flow with life?

Accept that you are a minuscule part of this universe:

Tiny part of Universe

By simply accepting that fact we have a little control of whatever manifests around us, we are just a just a tiny particle of the process of life will we be able to let go of ourselves. There are a countless amount of things which are happening in the universe without our intervention like sunrise, rainfall, flowering of trees and plants, rotation and revolution of planets etc. Even in our own body, we have no control on our internal organs. However, as humans, we want to control each and every aspect of our life. When things unfold our way we are happy and elated but when it happens the other way around we are sad, angry, anxious and we blame others for this situation. We are in constant struggle with our lives and try to make the outside world conform to our way.

When we spend our time trying to control everything in our life it creates a blockage, we become static and removed from our journey and we blindfold our intuition  – Louise Androila

Start living in the present moment:

The past is something which you have no control of. It has already happened and the future is something which is uncertain but Uncertainty is certain. Therefore, fully appreciate the moments of now. You will feel more alive and happy. Stop worrying about the future. Love your job. Forgive others and yourself. Be open to all kind of ideas, perceptions and situations. Be more loving and compassionate. Work hard now to reach your goal.

“To stay present in everyday life, it helps to be deeply rooted within yourself; otherwise, the mind, which has incredible momentum, will drag you along like a wild river” – Eckhart Tolle

Let go of your personal preferences:

Supposedly, You want to have your favourite meal in your favourite restaurant. Unfortunately, when you visit the restaurant you find that the kitchen ran out of it. Now, there are two ways to react to this. One ” My whole day has been ruined. What a terrible day it is”. Now, the other way which you can react is ” Ok. Let’s try something different today”. By choosing to react the second way you will find that you are still happy and you have let go of the misery. If you want things to be in a certain way, you will surround yourself with sufferings.

Meditate: Stop constant mind chatter

Meditate or Mindful

Have you ever noticed that there is constant chatter in our brains. We feel as if our mind is always talking to us. well. all these chatter are the basis of our likes, dislikes, judgements, worries, fear, sadness etc. Meditation will help you quiet your mind. You will still have thoughts but meditation will allow us to focus our attention to the present moment. When we meditate, wee focus on our breath. As soon as you are distracted, you bring back the focus on your breath. This rule should be followed even when you are not meditating. Slowly, it will become a part of you.

Try to surrender at least for a week and see what changes it brings into your life. You can enjoy life only when your life is at ease. By doing this, you will feel love within yourself and for others and you will be able to flow with life in full force.

  1. I have read the book – The Secret and I think I already been following that kind of philosophy – if you really want something, desperately, you get it, no matter what!
I got whatever I really wanted something badly, mostly delayed but I got stuff and eventually I came to a saying in my head – “You want it, you get it!”

    1. Hey Pankaj,

Rightly said. One thing which I learned from The secret is, everyone of us has got the hidden talent. It’s just a matter of time and the right moment when we discover the untapped potential within us. We should just have a positive attitude towards life if we want to have a joyous journey.

  6. Great Article. I would like to read the book, now that I’ve learned about it. It’s a delicate balance between reaching for your goals and dreams and learning to surrender. I believe that many of us, perhaps not all of us, can look back on our lives and instead of being bitter at the losses and the stresses, can actually see it brought us to a better place in the end. That is a form of surrender, I suppose. Meditation is also key to maintaining balance and removing some of the chatter in our minds. Thanks for the article!

  8. As a human we always want someone to inspire us or motivate us. I am truly saying that this article inspire me a lot. One thing I have learned is that forget about the past and don’t bother about future. we have only time that is now. Live like happy. Thanks for this article.

  9. In the Bhagavad Gita, when Arjuna wanted to take things in his hand and got confused, he finally surrendered to Lord Krishna and told him that “Now I am surrendered at your feet, now please instruct me on what to do”. Only after this mood of surrendered displayed by the prince Arjuna, Lord Krishna revealed the philosophical truth of the Veda to him. The point is one must take a humble approach in whatever he is doing, and the urge to wanting to learn more comes as the expense of dissolving one’s ego that he knows everything.

  10. This Article is interesting. This is what is said in the Bagavath Gita, of course in a philosophical sense. You young chaps want everything in a new bottle. But, it is not the new or the old that is concerned. It is our wish that the young ones should understand the truth and follow the right path.

  11. Thank you for this wonderful article …letting go of control really helps….it helped me a lot and i also appreciate your writing skills , keep going…an now i realize what this meant….
