WordPress Ending Support for PHP 4 and MySQL 4

in Wordpress

Unlike any other blogging platform wordpress have some requisite for it’s webhosting.  ForWordpress-logo example at this moment minimum hosting requirement for WordPress are :

  • PHP version 4.3 or greater
  • MySQL version 4.1.2 or greater

But from version 3.2 wordpress will stop the support for PHP 4 and My SQL 4. From Version 3.2 of WordPress, minimum Web-hosting requirement for WordPress would be PHP 5.2.

Another fact is even today many WordPress plugins need to have latest version of PHP in order to execute properly.

In an official blog announcement WordPress added:

“WordPress 3.1, due in late 2010, will be the last version of WordPress to support PHP 4.

For WordPress 3.2, due in the first half of 2011, we will be raising the minimum required PHP version to 5.2. Why 5.2? Because that’s what the vast majority of WordPress users are using, and it offers substantial improvements over earlier PHP 5 releases. It is also the minimum PHP version that the Drupal and Joomla projects will be supporting in their next versions, both due out this year.

In less exciting news, we are also going to be dropping support for MySQL 4 after WordPress 3.1. Fewer than 6 percent of WordPress users are running MySQL 4. The new required MySQL version for WordPress 3.2 will be 5.0.15.”

Since most of reputed WordPress Webhosting already support minimum requirement for running WordPress smoothly and before the release of WordPress 3.2 this minimum hosting requirement will be taken care  by them.

Hey Harsh,There is hell lotta of difference between previous version of PHP and PHP 5.3 . Most of it i understand is very good . Any idea how wordpress is handling such issues .I assume there needs to be a major change is the code base to support such high flexibility.

This is certainly a good move by them to upgrade to the latest versions, 4.2 is quite old now
