Few days back we have talked about Stumbleupon URL shortener which will enable you to get URL Shortener under your domain name. Though that feature was for self hosted wordpress blog, but not for wordpress.com users.
Though we don’t have Su.pr URL shortener for wordpress.com users, but the good news is Wordpress.com has launched a new wp.com URL shortening service for wordpress.com users.
The new wp.com URL shortening service is a permanent feature of wordpress.com blogs and can be seen under dashboard.
While creating and blog post, you can click on Get Shortlink, to got URL shortener for your post. You need not need to worry about link juice, as wp.com URL shortener will pass on the link juice to your post.
In the official announcement wordpress mentioned :
- WP.me is the only two-letter .me domain in the world.
- Every blog and post on WordPress.com has a WP.me URL now.
- These are all exposed in the <head> using rel=shortlink.
- It doesn’t work for any URL in the world, just WP.com-hosted ones.
- The links are permanent, they will work as long as WordPress.com is around.
- WP.me is spam-free, because we are constantly monitoring and removing spam from WP.com.
So this is Good news for wordpress.com users, for self hosted wordpress.com users, you might like to try :

Sounds like a fun feature but to we really need it? The only time when it’s good to shorten URL:s is if you are send a simple mail and how often does you that? Twitter will shorten them automatically for you.

Well us. This feature is very useful for wordpress.com users who don’t have freedom to add any plugin like we do.

The one which comes by default is always good. I will suggest use Su.pr URL shortener. It’s great for traffic also. Though last time ( 1 month back) when I used it , there was a big (RSS feeds bug) , So I will suggest do a cross check about it in the Su.pr Support forum.
I havent taken any benefits of any URL shortening till now. Could u further elaborate is there any benefit in terms of traffic too of this service and How we can benefit from it ?
