I think the main issue is that dedicated hosting can be really complicated if you don't know how to run one. But if you have the money and know how to run a dedicated server, I think it's a good choice. I think when you are a beginner you should have the attitude that you are in it for the long run - so set up your sites knowing you will have tons of traffic in the future. Depends.
