The rise of blogging and social media in the past couple of years is remarkable. No one ever thought that online media will replace traditional media, and moreover blogging will not be seen as just a hobby.
But being an Indian, it’s really hard to be a blogger, and here I will outline some of the common problems we face being a blogger. This post will be incomplete without your input, so I suggest you to also mention your viewpoints on why blogging as a career is not so favourable for us, and what we can do to make it in our favour.
We are the Indians, best thinkers, hard workers and always eager for success. We face so many problems when it comes to choosing the best path for our career. I, you and all of us have to answer several questions before deciding about the career.
Whether you want to be an engineer, doctor, lawyer and blogger, you have to bear all the criticisms that lie in our society. And for sure when we talk about blogging then people start saying, “what, blo-blogging???”

Blogging as a profession is catching up in India but it’s still at very infant stage. It is so risky to tell your well-wishers that you want to be a blogger. Here are some common reasons why India is not producing so many bloggers and why a career as a blogger is not a piece of cake.
Why a career as a Blogger is not preferable in India?
No awareness
Awareness is a very big factor in India development and so as in blogging. I have many incidences where I feel so helpless to explain to others that what I do? The whole discussion starts and ends with some taglines.
- ABC: What you do?
- Me: I do blogging.
- ABC:”Blo- Blogging”? What does it mean?
- Me (Blank): I run a website through which I earn money.
- ABC: In attitude, so you design websites???
- Me (let’s end it): Yah….
The same kind of discussion takes place with many bloggers because there is no awareness about blogging in India.
Study Pressure for students
Harsh has written a remarkable post on why College students should be blogging and we all know about the pressure we have lots of pressures and Indian study is also on this list. I am not saying that study is a problem but our educational system (Indian study) is not made to produce game-changers. We travel through a long education journey in which no one has the time to do anything different. Reason being, we have lots of tuition work, classwork, exam stress and other activities to do.
If you ask any master degree student about internet then half of them will get blank. And if you ask about blogging then only a few of them will be answering you precisely. So better, we need to come out of this pressure cooker and do something out of the box.
Quick income from Job
In India, everyone follows a thumb rule that studies and get a good job. And if you don’t get a good job then find it. I have many friends who are seeking a good job from the last 2 years after B. tech and you know the real fact is that they want just a job whether it is good or not. Because their motto is to earn money as soon as possible and only for this reason they have given 2 years of their life to job hunting.
When I tell them about blogging, they say,” we don’t want to waste our time.” Great if blogging is wastage of time then what about 2 years job hunting after B-tech. All the people of India are finding a good job (with no serious efforts) and wasting their time if they start giving this time to blogging then this can be their first step towards a bright future.
Family Pressure
Family pressure is the key that why there are fewer companies in India like Google, Face book, Microsoft and Apple. From our childhood, it is told to us that better you do a government job and if you don’t find a government job then better you do a private job. For a child who wants to be a businessman, an entrepreneur and a blogger, the conversation is like this.
- Child (With full determination): Hey dad, I want to be an entrepreneur.
- Dad (Angrily): What!!!!!
- Child: Dad, I am not saying to be a terrorist.
- Dad: It is like being a terrorist, leaves this dream as soon as possible. See Sharma’s son, he got ### AIR rank in JEE-Main and conversation ended.
And when you overcome these hurdles then you face other problems
Blogging without knowledge
Surely no one is the master of any field in starting. Everyone starts without the knowledge and after that, they gain knowledge about that field. Getting knowledge about bogging is somewhat difficult in India because there is no institute that tells about how to do blogging. There are few questions come in mind when you are in the starting stage.

Writing Skills
- English Grammar
- Poor writing

- Less knowledge of Keywords, titles, backlinks and indexing
Less Knowledge about monetization of the website
- No idea about earning through website except Google Adsense
Blogging with guidance
If someone is ready to guide you on some cost or freely then still you will face these problems in blogging.
- Writing skills
No one can teach you how to write great articles for blogs, they can advise you that write like this. But in blogging more you read more you will be able to write precisely. They can’t teach you English grammar, it is understood that you work on your English from your own.
- Dependency
Ones someone starts guiding you then whether you get to know or not but surely you will become dependent on him. You will be calling him for little problems and ones he doesn’t pick your call, you will be losing your temper soon.
Blogging with knowledge
Above all the problems of family and knowledge if you are determinant for blogging then there are some other hidden phobias like
- No Google Adsense
I have seen many bloggers quitting from blogging due to no AdSense approval. Even I have wasted my enough time for getting my AdSense approval but failed all the time. - Responsibility
It may kill you because ones you start this journey there will be no one with you like class fellows in academic. There are few known Indian bloggers who did so well in blogging so try to be in their company to overcome this phobia. And take responsibility for your decision.
Well, I don’t mean to discourage you from taking blogging as a career, because blogging is one lucrative job where you are your own boss. Moreover, it helps you to become an online celebrity.

You will encounter this all the time, and I suggest you to increase awareness by telling the person how blogging works. It will hardly take 5 minutes, but the person will understand the concept throughout the life. More over, he will be in position to explain the concept to others!

i do not agree with this article because i do not think here is any problem regarding blogging if you can manage a blog and earn well via blogging then here is not any problem regarding blogging.
Blogging is increasing rapidly day by day in India but each and every person should do something along with blogging because it can harm your life if your blog is not getting popular.
you also said about knowledge. i think all peoples learn when they start, if you will not jump into sea then you cannot estimate the speed of wave.

Its not easy being a blogger in India as most people don’t know what it is. Some people think that you are making a killing and they want to learn from you. Some think its easy and all you have to do is sit on the computer whole day.
Really the career as a blogger in India is tough and all the points that will explain it are explained by you above and all the points are realities and the most faced problems being faced by any blogger who wants to make it’s career in the field of blogging.
When people ask what do I do all day sitting on my computer, I just say I run content publication services online. Anything more technical and I loose an hour or so explaining what blogging really is.
Indeed it’s hard to be a blogger in India. There are a lot of genuinely awesome bloggers around and we people don’t yet have the professionalism and community feeling shown by bloggers outside. We all are trying to wage a lone man war and that’s one of the biggest mistakes of us Indian Bloggers.

Well said Sumit! In India, People think blogging is THE way to earn money from home, and they quit within 6 months by putting adsense without original content. They need to understand that Blogging is just like a product that you need to Define its goals before selling them.
It also happened with me when I joined Quikr (online classifieds) as a design lead. People always ask the same question “What is this all about?” And “What do you over there?”. Because they have no idea about online classifieds after all.
In india, it’s very difficult to make someone understand about new ideas that can change their lives, right!
Like you said, it’s true that most of the parents insist their children to do masters, phd, doc or else a software engineers to earn big bucks in US or UK being employed. They will never insist their children to go for entrepreneurship or writer.
The point is “playing being safe” without taking risks.
The reason why I started my blog in 2011 was to help upcoming young designers to learn what industry wants and for clients who thinks design is doing something in Photoshop (just like all you need a computer to blog, lol). Managing everything at the same time without quitting my current job is not an easy job eespecially when you come up with an idea, make tons of drafts, editing to publishing. Though I take a month to publish an article, but I make sure they are usable by others and not reparative content like writing my own diary after all.
However, I would like to add few points as per my observation including social media to blogging platforms.
1. Most of them don’t read the entire post via Facebook Post (even though the post was well written). What they do by clicking on the little like icon or leave a comment saying “What are you doing these days?”
2. The most intelligent people in India are capable of doing almost anything, but they lack when it comes to Engagements, Sharing to discussion via Open Forums. I felt this while using Google+ network and guess what! Only 10% of Indian users interact, comments or even read the post as compare to the 90% of Non-Indian Users who Engage for big time.
3. The problem of looking after Shortcuts to win a game. For instance, people think by spending 1 hour (while watching Cricket Matches or before going to bed) they can setup a pro blogging site, which should be listed on Google search engine as #1 rank, common guys!
4. The literacy level and Knowledge to share: You will find % of users/friends in Facebook having no knowledge about what is Social Media and what is Networking. They can only upload photos and like others because they don’t know how to write comments. Knowledge Sharing is not happening because one is getting jealous of another. If they know how to solve a problem they will never write about it or tell you either. For instance, you will find most of the helpful blog ideas or DIY from non-indian blogs when you type in google search unlike ShoutMeLoud and Labnol.
In fact, there are more scenarios out there as you know it’s India.

Sumit, I’m not sure about How much tough in blogging career, I believe which one have a Good writing skill in Transverse subject? If Their can easily success in blogging. Don’t care about your family for choosing a right career, any cause we have not freedom? just do with part time and after success our blogging carrier? if we can take full time profession. but we must have confidence in blogging. Honestly speaking Sumit, these are common challenges/hardships that any person who looks at going against conventional policies face. My personal opinion about this is because of how familial lives operate in India; you know with more stress been given on society and a majority of decisions made by the parents even if their child is at the age of 30.
My humble suggestion is to persevere and make a concious decison on what you love to do. It’s a small life, and you honestly wouldn’t want to live with the regret of “Oh how I wished I had atleast tried” Charles of CharlesNGO explained this beautifully: You can’t let fear hold you back. Why? Because the reward is greater than the risk. “You can always get another job. You can always bounce back.”
Also people who Blog aren’t just Bloggers, they say Blogging because that’s what it’s generically referred to; I would like to refer to their role as: Making The Masses Aware and Helping Them Make Informed Decisions

I can relate most some of the points on the post with my own life experiences. That is the reason why inspite of having around 5+ of work experience in digital media , having an engineering background and lots of craze for blogging , I am still doing job and Blogging is like hobby for me.
Still I am trying and hope many of my fellow Indian bloggers are in this phase or passed this phase. Lots of awareness is required for Blogging in India.

Well i agree on some of the points you mentioned here but actually blogging becomes difficult when you only consider it as a money making machine but once you see the other side of it you realize that there is much more to do rather than just making money.
People become confused when they don’t succeed because they only work for making money and it really takes time to make dollars out of it. So in my suggestion there must be first guide line for newbies that blogging takes time to generate money and once they realize this they will consider blogging much easier.
What Aashray Anand mentioned is correct. There are bloggers who are doing it as a passion. Only when they expect money, the blogger is getting dejected. Thank you for sharing this information. If any one thinks blogging is a big nut to crack, they must understand that these challenges are normal for any blogger.

I am from Sri Lanka and exactly the same situation is here too, my point is if you are choosing blogging then patience is the name of the game.
I think we are master in one field where our interest we can write better there. We try to write something different from our theme and lack of knowledge about that theme so its difficult to writes different blogs on different topics.
You are absolutely correct. I finished my b.tech in 2013. But still i have no job. At last i decided to take blogging as my career. All of my friends are said, no don’t spoil ur life. I think you summed it up so well in this post – very apt, and something most Indian’s go through and would be able to relate to.
I know the surprised and puzzled looks on the face of people when you tell them you are a blogger or earn through your site, or work online, and the endless explaining that follows thereafter!! Yes, awareness is what is lacking, though blogging is slowly catching up, yet, it’s tough to make money online through blogging for newbies, which results in them giving up very soon.
Peer pressure is another problem, and as you rightly mentioned, very few parents would really support their teens to take up blogging as a career as the old school of thought prevails and they want them to become doctors or engineers.
I wish things would change and become better, and perhaps it can happen if a few known bloggers start training new ones to make a real living from blogging, so that they can prove their worth. Easier said than done, and though they are always there to help, I find very few really coming up to help others – selflessly 🙂
