When is Not the Right Time to Start Accepting Guest Post

This is a guest post by Hacktik who blogs at Hacktik. If you would like to write for ShoutMeLoud, check our adsense revenue sharng program.

In my recent post on my blog I have discussed about Top 5 Benefits of Accepting a Guest Post on your Blog. However, I concluded the same post with a small warning that  not everything is good about accepting guest post specially the timing factor when you should or should not start accepting guest posts. You may not be able to enjoy all the 5 benefits which I discussed, if you don’t take the timing into consideration. The biggest risk and only down side possible with accepting guest post could be losing the traffic and visitors from your blog to guest’s writer’s blog. So, instead of expecting additional benefits of more traffic, visitors, promotion and revenue, you actually start losing them to your guest. Let’s understand how and when such a thing could happen. This could happen when -

(I have assumed the niche of your as well as your guest writer’s blog is primarily same)

Guest blog post

Welcome Guest Writers

When your blog is too young

We most often find many bloggers who start accepting guest posts on their blog within couple of week of starting their blog. First of all, even if the blogger does so, it is not generally easy to draw attention of other bloggers to write for them. Why should they? Blogger submit post on other blogs in lieu of some personal benefits, the biggest of which is self promotion. When your blog who is still very young and new must be starving for some promotion and visitors for itself. Being new, your blog may not be a well known name in the blogosphere and count of regular and loyal readers for your blog must be close to minimal. At this stage and keeping all the above points in mind, you bear a biggest risk of losing out most of your traffic (whatever, you may have been able to gain so far) to your guest’s blog, specially if he is a better writer than you.

When number of visitor and regular readers for your own blog is very less

It is also quite possible that even though your guest’s blog may also be new (mostly, it will be so) but may be having more number of regular readers (however, minimal). They may have left lots of appreciative comments already for the content on his blog. So any new visitor coming to his blog from your blog’s reference may also start following suit and may leave your blog altogether because they have actually liked your guest’s content and not yours.

When quality of your content is not at all good or not at par with others

When quality of your own content on your blog is not good or not at par with others, then it would be easy for them to get distracted to other blogs (guest’ blog) who is able to provide even a little better content or extra information than yours.

Hence, best timing and situation to start accepting guest post on your blog is when you don’t have any of the above listed 3 conditions. Guest post will only supplement and add extra value to your blog if your blog has been around for a while, enjoys a good traffic and more importantly have a good amount of regular readers and is a well known name (to some extent) in the blogosphere. Then, even when your guest is a better writer than you, he may draw attention of visitors from your blog but it wouldn’t be a sufficient reason for your visitors to leave your blog altogether and start following him only. They would now may become even more interested and regular to your blog with the expectation to again find some thing different by some one else.

So, when your blog doesn’t have any of the above listed 3 conditions, then chances are high that you can enjoy all the 5 benefits (and even more than that) which I explained in my post on my blog.

nice article. You can accept guest posting at anytime when you have good loyal visitors, it is also not necessary to have a revenue sharing program. So a small blog with good active traffic can also accept guest post which will help him to grow, but as his earnings are not that great so he can skip the revenue sharing program.

I agree with the statement that if blog is too young.. but sometimes it can benefit as will because the guest post might be very meaningful and hence it could fetch lots of traffic for u…

Absolutely Ashish but the risk side is – visitors have primarily been drawn to your blog because of some one else’s writeup. So, even though you may see a temporary inflow of traffic but you may not be able to sustain that for long and will ultimately lose to your guest’ blog.

    Hi Hacktik,

Nice post. Just a curious question, your blog seems to be pretty new(Domain registered in April) with Alexa rank over 600, 000 and you blogs almost with same niche of ShoutMeLoud, are you not loosing visitors to ShoutMeLoud based on the above explanation?

      Hi Rakesh,

I think, you are mistaken. I have not yet started accepting guest posts on my blog. Rather, I have written this post as a Guest on shoutmeloud. Hope, I clarified your question.

Great “warnings” on accepting guest posts. However, I believe if your own blog is not exceptionally good, then you might not attract good guest posts as well. Correct or not?

      Absolutely right, Jasmine.
Thats what I highlighted in first (of three) reasons above.

Nice points! New bloggers shouldn’t enable guest posting only for atleast 6 months after starting a new blog.

Well Shubham, as long as you are doing good on other points, you can still think about accepting guest posts even earlier than 6 months. However, I agree, generally speaking, you should aim at least 6 months not to invite guests. :-)

Well here, somebody speaks truth about guest blogging and warns readers to consider. I agree with you on all those three conditions.

Additionally, I’d like to add one more. Though your blog is free from all those three conditions, check if the number of guest posts are not diluting your existence and your blog started to color in different color. Guest posting is good but too much is not good in anything.

Hi Hacktik, Nice post, Blogger accept guest post to provide variety in writing and subject for their readers but you are right in the begining you may loose traffic instead of gain.
