On Thursday morning , Twitter went down for couple of hours. Users were tweeting about the downtime with the hashtag #Twitfail #Whalefail as there was no office announcement for this downtime.
Initially it looked like routing twitter maintenance downtime, but it was not.
Later on, In the official announcement Twitter said
On this otherwise happy Thursday morning, Twitter is the target of a denial of service attack. Attacks such as this are malicious efforts orchestrated to disrupt and make unavailable services such as online banks, credit card payment gateways, and in this case, Twitter for intended customers or users
After few hours, Twitter again announced that , they have recovered from the problem, though some users will still face the problem for a while.
Over the last few hours, Twitter has been working closely with other companies and services affected by what appears to be a single, massively coordinated attack. As to the motivation behind this event, we prefer not to speculate.
If you are not aware of DOS Attack, It is denial of service attack, in which a system is targeted by hacker and lots of communication request is sent at the same time, so that system runs out of resource and it goes down.
Some Folks also reported that It’s not only Twitter but Facebook is also facing the similar issue as it was getting down and many facebook application were not responding properly.
Though things are better now, but they still have an issue with their API, this may cause few external Twitter application , not to work properly.

Hmmm, yesterday I was actually checking for tweets in Twhirl.
But, no matter how many times I refreshed I didnt get any updates. So, checked on the Twitter site. Phew!It was down.
I do not understand how Twitter does not use the security measures to prevent from DOS attacks even after DOS got obsolete in the present time period.

Yeah, thats why tweetdeck wasn’t loading the twitter section. Now just read on facebook that they were also attacked:

I can’t see the point of using this against a site like Twitter. What’s the purpose? Sure, I’m guessing they had a lot of fun doing it, but what more? How benefits from it?

I read on CNN that twitter was having a massive DOS attack. I hope the FBI will find out who did this and get them. They want to be cool to show people what they can do.

I was night-sleeping when Twitter was down. And after waked in the morning, twitter was already up again. I knew about the DOS from other tweets
Read in the paper that it was the work of Russian hackers against of Georgian twitter user.
Hmm, Twitter is now a personal ground for warfare. Interesting??
I don’t think so.

Oh I had tried so many time to update but I was not expecting this type of big problems with twitter like sites. Twitter is an addiction and no such type of things should occur with this.
