Should we spend hours on digg or rather write articles?

by Harsh Agrawal on January 24, 2009

in Blogging

The urge for getting more number of your post into Digg home page is like “Sex” , more you will get more you will seek for.
Though Any blogger knows the joy of seeing their post on Digg home-page.

should I?

should I?

For any Blogger the Digg better-half will be Stumbleupon.

Digg and Stumble-Upon:

There is no doubt that both sites require ample amount of time daily and people do spent almost hours a day on both the sites and this is what most of the article available on Internet says.

In the urge of becoming a power user any normal user on Digg spent almost 2-3 hours a day, listening to people shouts, digging their article without knowing the fact , If that article worth a Digg or not??
Stumble-Upon, people recognize you by the number of pages you have stumbled and to create an interesting profile you have to sit few hours daily and have to stumble up and stumble down almost hundred of websites daily, then only   you will be recognized on Stumble-Upon, and that will be the reason why people will follow you on SU.

Else the short-cut method , search for Similar people who are looking for instant traffic like you, and exchange Stumbles. Though lately I realize SU has better prospect then Digg because stumble upon users keep coming back and if they like it they thumbs up your article and all traffic from there depend on how good and worthy article you have written.
digg need time 300x273 Now I wont bore you with more on this because I know you are smart enough to decide spending time on Digg is good or evil for yourself by the facts which I’m going to state:

Digg=Time=Money

I was reading an article from Darren Rowse,

The author of Problogger Skip digg not all traffic is created equeal

While reading his   article hundred of thoughts strike into my mind!1 The time i spent on digg I could have utilize those time by writing new posts.

2 The time I spent shouting and digging others articles i could have worked on other stuff.

3 Posting on multiple forums, commenting on other blogs will create more difference then sitting in front of computer and doing nothing apart from endless Digging.

Last but not the least!!

5 Now after realizing all this fact, Am I going to quit Digg?? Will I be able to forget that front page of Digg addiction which can give me thousands of clicks.

Digg?? Should we or Should not??

Every individual have there own opinion, I’m sure even you have your own opinion.
I will prefer cutting down the time I spent on Digg and will play safe game by participating more on commenting and creating quality contains and more of back-links.
( Point to be noted:   I never said I’m going to leave Digg) ;)
Conclusion : We all know that Digg is the best, but spending half of your day on digging. Does it worth it?

Can you justify the above statement??

Stay tuned with shoutmeloud feeds because soon I’m writing an article on why Digg is important for your blog.

Well…As they said “More=Better” i would suggest that you should avail all the big giants in industry….. digg, reddit, stumbleupon…. everyone have their advantages and disadvantages…. If you wanna compare digg & stumbleupon. well its not that easy to hit on first page of digg to get 100s and 1000s of traffic. and if you dont get on fp you will not get that much traffic. on other hand SU is better and easier to get gud traffic. and same is true with reddit.

Although digg is on no#1 at the moment and can bring great spike in your traffic. however for long term traffic u need SU traffic as well….

@ Asif
You are almost right but the major benefit with digg is if any of your articles make a FP the number of backlinks which you get from high PR websites are enormous and it is too good for your website and that sudden spike of traffic if you can hold it and if you can convert them to your loyal visitors then only you will be able to enjoy the joy of making a FP else making a FP might makes you few bucks and nothing more.

I’ve experienced that traffic from Digg is awful. The bounce rate is really high and most of them there just reciprocally digg each others. However, hit the front page there is a good chance to expend your blog. I find many friends who’re blogging in my same niche, and I’ve written them some guest posts. I also get more followers from Digg, some help me alot.

I appreciate your comment and I agree with you about the point traffic and bounce rate, though bounce rate is always high when You get traffic from social media.
Though If I summarize what Digg has given me:
1. Helps to index well on Google giving u better traffic and this is what most of the SEO says about dofollow social media websites.
2. Social media connection which become an assets for me later on which I’m sure you and asif is aware of.
3. Let me keep track of all the latest news in realtime.
4. Digg made me realize the importance of social media and the things which we can get out of it.
5. Digg gave me friends like you :)
Though I will never say Digg is bad for traffic but I will always suggest for blogger who spend hours of time on Digg like I did, You can utilize much better by writing better content.

How about point 2 and 4?
2: Social media connection : The friends we made there on digg, most of them are social media expert, webmasters, bloggers and SEO expert. In my case I got many help from them with many things. When I was facing SEO issues Saadkamal helped me with everything. Many digg friends approached me to help me with design.

Hmm, I believe Twitter is a better place for social media connection. I also make friends there, but then I always ask them their Twitter account to keep the connection. Chatting back and forth on Twitter is really easier than shout on Digg.

I agree with you and probably that’s why I’m getting distant from Digg. I made better connection and friend on Twitter but at the same time it’s the basic rule of social media that you should be available everywhere.
