Heard a new tune but can’t guess the name? Heard that song at the party and want to download it? That happens to us so often. The dilemma of hearing an addictive piece of music and failing to identify it is irritating at times. Well here’s a solution. Get Shazam!

Introduced back in 2002, Shazam is a service for mobile phones that helps you identify music you hear around you. More than 50 million people use it worldwide. If you can hear it, Shazam can identify it.

How does it work? Well the approach is similar to that of fingerprint identification. A small piece of software on your phone, records a mini clip when you point your phone’s mic to the music source. The clip is then sent to the Shazam server where it is compared to a database of over 8 million tracks (yes and the number keeps increasing everyday). If identified, you will be shown the track title, album and artist details.

You will also be provided links to buy the track if you intend to. Else you can just share the song with your friends by emailing them the results. All other features apart, could music identification be any easier?

Shazam is available for all popular cellphone platforms. From Java to Symbian, the list goes on to include iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Windows Mobile. In fact, this service is so popular, it’s being installed by many cell phone manufacturers too, before shipment.

iPhone and iPod Touch users head over to itunes.com/apps/shazam. The Application is free of charge. While iPhone users may use the phone’s built in microphone for recording the sound the iPod Touch users will need to use the headset for the same.

Blackberry users can get the software for free from App World.

Another platform? Head over to shazam.com to get the software on your own cellular device. Still waiting? Go out. Discover music with your phone. Don’t forget to come back and share your experience with us.
