Reputable Sites Have Few Days Left To Block XXX Registration

icmregistry2 300x150 XXX is the newest top-level domain (TLD) approved by ICANN ( Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). Needless to say, the TLD will be exclusively assigned to adult entertainment sites. The registration process is a bit more lenient compared to that of other TLDs like .com and .net, but it wouldn’t protect all well established brands from ruthless cybersquatters which right this minute are probably thinking of registering MeganFox.xxx or VictoriasSecret.xxx.

ICM Registry<Link>, the company that handles XXX domain applications, promises potential victims protection from cybersquatting, (See: Typosquatting). but at a certain price: $199.99 for ten years. Is it really worth the price? If your sites can be mistaken for a porn site because of its name, like Virgin.com or CelebrityCruise.com, then decide right away for the deadline for pre-emptive registration is on October 28, 2011.

10-Year Protection Only for Registered Trademarks

The 10-year protection for existing domains can only be provided to those with registered trademarks or patented brands. If your website was named after an unpatented brand, you cannot qualify for this type of pre-emptive registration. The only way to safeguard your website would be to follow the standard registration and domain parking, which would commence on December 6, 2011. How much would it cost? Around $100 for the first year of registration, renewable annually.

17-Day Pre-Auction Period Excludes Decent Brands

Just like other TLDs, the most-sought domain names are available to those who can pay more. From November 8 to 25, XXX domain names can be reserved by adult entertainment folks who can spend $100 more in processing fees. Which means that before some dot.com owners of un-patented names or products can pay for the standard defensive registration in December, some porn site owners might have successfully filed the XXX counterparts. Unlike the pre-emptive and pre-registration process this October, the so-called “LandRush” registration sets no requirements. Registrants vying for the same name will compete in a closed auction after November 25.

How to prevent brand confusion when your reputable site gets an XXX counterpart?

You can turn to Uniform Domain Name Resolution Policy (UDRP) process of ICANN or invoke your rights under the anticybersquatting law if it’s available in your country (like the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act of the US). Otherwise, consider changing your domain name, but be sure to get pre-emptive registration for XXX this time.

Are you planning to preserve your brand by buying XXX domain for your brand name? Also, do you believe that all porn sites should be using only .xxx domain extension and not .com or any other TLD’s?
