An Online Venture to Save Newspapers

Earlier this year in May, folks working for top newspaper and other companies dealing in print media met at Chicago to discuss their need of a savior. Discussions lead to the conclusion that they really needed a tech company’s support at this point of time to help them find ways to save themselves and also make bucks online.

Requests were sent out to various top-notch companies and replies have already started to roll in creating great media buzz. While most companies have the potential to bring in this revolution the deal winner will be one that is already a proven and well established player in the field.

Clearly, Google has significant advantage over the others. It’s been using Checkout services to let users shop across various portals on the web by signing into just one place using their Google account. A newspaper platform could evolve out of this wherein users could just login using their Google account and view all the papers they subscribe to in one place. However, Google users have already been using Google news to flip through headlines and read those that interest them. So it’s yet to be seen how the latter puts a stress on the Google-Newspaper relationship, if at all their builds one that is.

Microsoft, is another big player with great potential. It proposes to make both paid and free content available on a wide array of platforms from PC to mobile devices. Yahoo doesn’t seem to have shown any keen interest in this matter yet. Another company Journalism Online, has also suggested a pay wall concept wherein the news providers will have the ability to decide what content is available for free and what lies behind the pay-for-content wall.

It is very hard to say, as of now, as to which company will finally step into the game and also whether consumers will actually be able to benefit or not from the initiative. So consumer level surveys might greatly help in this regard.

Well I think that newspapers are the victim of time…In todays fast lifestyle who has the time to read a newspaper by taking a long time. Though many people read newspaper but I think many of them are not tech savvy or they like reading newspaper. Anyway if newspapers can go online that will be good for all of us.

Thanks

This is really going to be tough but will definitely open a new market for online newspaper companies. Microsoft will definitely go for a designer look and may be using Silerlight and all but Google’s product will be simple and extremely fast as flip. Hope to get the best out of it.

Thanks Rajat for this nice article. Its good to see you here.
