Creating a blog is easy as it’s a one-off task with designing done but growing your blog takes time and effort. During this growth period, many may feel that they are not on pace with others to achieve their goals

Frustration sets in during this period of growing a blog. But what if you could measure your growth and see if you are really going in the right track or not.

Many bloggers completely give up blogging or slow down because they don’t see any direct results. They feel that they aren’t on the right track.

So, how do you understand if you are on the right track and if your blog is really growing or not even if you aren’t getting any direct benefits in terms of money?

6 Checklists To Understand If Your Blog Is Really Growing

1. Are your inbound links increasing without you building them manually?

An inbound link is a direct measure to understand if the content you are producing is worthy enough for others to link back to you. According to Moz, gaining traction, attention, and organic traffic depends on the link profile of a website.

These links are very important for search engine rankings and your popularity in the industry.

As the number of these links increases, you’ll start becoming recognized as an authority. I am not talking about the links that people build manually through commenting or guest posting but the links that are earned automatically because of the great content you produced.

2. How many Unique Visitors, Returning Visitors and Page Views Is you Blog Getting?

Statistics is an important component to measure the growth of a blog. A blog without traffic (I mean, targeted visitors) is not worthwhile and does not account for growth.

The overall stats of your blog – the number of unique visitors you’re getting to your blog per day, the number of returning visitors, the number of page views you had and the average time spent on your blog. You have to consider all these factors to check if your blog is really growing.

If you are still not measuring your blog stats, I would recommend you to set it up right now.

You can use free Analytics program from Google, and you can find all the information about it here. If you are already using Google analytics, this custom dashboard usage will be handy for you.

3. Has your email subscriber count increased?

If people are subscribing to your blog, it clearly means that your blog is growing. People don’t often subscribe to blogs from where they don’t want updates.

So, if your subscriber base is increasing slowly, it is a good sign. However, don’t set unrealistic expectations like getting 1000 subscribers in a day. It only leads to frustration and breaks down the high spirit with which you started your blog. So, make a slow and steady growth of your subscriber rate.

Also don’t limit yourself just with an email subscription, as social media following is equally important. You can check this guide to understand what all subscription option you should offer.

4. Are people commenting on your blog?

Well, commenting doesn’t directly relate to growth but it’s a great reflection of the quality of your blog.

Sometimes, a blog is growing in other aspects but people aren’t commenting on it, yet if the blogger notices the analytics, he can see people are visiting the blog.

So, why aren’t people commenting?

Many think sharing a post takes a shorter time than commenting, so to show off that they liked the post, they just share it or tweet it instead of leaving a comment.

Another case might be the blog has a huge number of comments but all are comments such as “Nice post!” and so on. These kinds of comments aren’t valuable and don’t provoke discussion.

A blog with fewer genuine thought-provoking opinionated comments is better than a blog having 100s of generic comments.

5. Are you getting shares, likes, and followers?

Whenever you write content, you always like to share it with your friends and followers. Right?

Are people sharing your content?

Are they hitting the “Like” button on Facebook?

Are you getting more followers on Twitter?

If yes, then your blog is growing. With the great content you are producing, people are really liking it and finding it worth sharing.

How many are making friends with you? Are you getting invitations for meet-ups with bloggers in your niche? The growth of a blog is directly related to these factors and you have to consider these things to check if your blog is growing or not.

If your blog community is growing and a large number of people recognize you by your name, you are definitely growing as a blogger and thus your blog too.

6. Do you know the source that brings in the maximum number of targeted visitors to your blog?

Not all traffic generation methods work for every blog. It differs from niche to niche. A blog on fashion and entertainment can get the maximum traffic from social media whereas a blog on insurance can get maximum traffic from search engines.

So, if you know the source that brings the maximum number of traffic to your blog, you’ve won half of the game.

If you are aware of the source, your blog is growing because you can leverage the source to bring in more visitors.

Have you achieved your short-term goals?

In the race to make money from the blog (a long-term goal), many people forget to achieve their short-term goals, which might be the pillar to the long-term goal.

Short-term goals include getting 100 subscribers within 2 months, getting 200 targeted visitors per day within 2 months, and so on. If you have not achieved these short-term goals, your blog isn’t growing.

For any newbie blogger, it is very important to measure the growth of their blog on a weekly or monthly basis. This is the only way you can move ahead in your blogging career and make blogging a full-time income from blogging.

Do you think these are the only ways to measure your blogging success or blog growth?

Do you use any other metrics to study your blog growth?

Every month I set a short term goal on organic traffic for the coming month. My main aim is to beat the organic traffic from the month before. And so far i’ve done this with a 60% increase month on month. However I’ve achieved barely any comments. Not sure how to improve in this area.

    hey Mainak,
I am spending so much time on creating links for my blog and I created a lot. But still external links are not being updated as checked through Moz tools. Is there something else which i need along with creating links?

    1. Mainak Halder

Well, only creating thousands of links won’t work unless these links come come from sites from where you can get targeted traffic. Along with creating links, I would recommend you to create relationships with other bloggers through commenting, as that will get you a lot of referral traffic.
