How Many AdSense Ad Units Can I Put on a Single Page?

228Shares

UPDATE: This article is updated in August 2022 with the latest information. Read carefully, as this can help you earn more money from Adsense.

We all know that AdSense is (to date) the best contextual, high-paying ad network.

But AdSense also has very strictly enforced program policies. If they find that a website violates their TOS, they will permanently disable the account.

It is very important to follow AdSense’s quality and program guidelines to avoid having your AdSense account banned.

Here’s one of the most common questions new bloggers asks:

  • “What is the maximum number of AdSense units can I put on a page?”

Google AdSense offers different types of ads, and most are categorized in the following formats:

  • Display ads
  • In-feed Ads
  • In-article ads
  • Multiplex-ads
  • Search engine ads

Here are the maximum AdSense ad units allowed for a web page:

AdSense Content Unit

Earlier, AdSense had a maximum limit of 3 ad units (while “premium partners” enjoyed serving up to 6 ad units).

In August 2016, AdSense lifted the ad unit limit for every site.

  • You can now place an unlimited amount of AdSense ads on a page.

However, advertising and other paid promotional material added to your pages should not exceed your content.

In other words:

  • You also need to maintain the quality of your site.

You can also use ads from multiple publisher IDs.

(Note: I have started serving ads using Ezoic, which is also helping me to increase my overall revenue.)

AdSense For Search

For a big website, AdSense For Search units perform well.

If you have not yet set up AdSense For Search units, read our guide:

How many AdSense ad unit can you put on a page?

As mentioned above, Google has lifted the limit restrictions. As long as your ads do not exceed your content, there is no upper limit on the number of ads on a single page.

It’s important to note that while picking the number of ads, you should consider the short blog posts. If you decide to place more than 5-6 ad units and place them sitewide using a plugin, you might be spamming your own short posts with a large number of ads.

AdSense has explicitly mentioned:

  • “We may limit or disable ad serving on pages with little to no value and/or excessive advertising until changes are made.”

So I suggest you keep less than 5 ads per page.

I usually stick to 3 or 4.

But you should identify your own limit according to your blog’s layout.

Here are a few things which I have learned from my own experience:

  • Sometimes lower number of ad units perform better than more ad units.
  • Placing ads above the fold yields better results.

There are many different options available for placing ads, but I highly recommend using a minimum amount of ad units or utilizing adverts only at the bottom or on the sidebar.

Let us know how many AdSense ad units you use on your blog. Now that Google has lifted the limit, are you using more AdSense ad units, or are you keeping it the same? Share your experience in the comments!

As always, feel free to share this post with your friends and colleagues on Facebook, Twitter, and Whatsapp.

Can we use two different Google Ad-sense in a Website (i.e) Two Different publisher ID.
Is it violation of Ad-sense Rules?

  2. Ben Jamir

This has been a very confusing issue among adsense publishers. Its correct that you can follow the rule 3+3+2 , which means you can have 3 content ads (mixed ad units), 3 text only link units and 2 search units. That is a total of 8 units…no confusion on that. BTW you can use only one large ad unit.
    Thanks Harsh for sharing.

I use one Adsense placement per page and for a numerous reason. The first is, I do not want to use up my visitors mobile data loading my site and Adsense ads.

Second, most people come to my site for the content, not to view the Adsense ads. Third, if they do not block Adsense ads, they will see it while looking at my content but will most likely not click on the Adsense ads which will hurt my CTR.

Who would want to use 2 AdSense for search anyway?
    Thanks for clearing my confusion

Thank you for this… by the way, I am using blogger and if you are familiar of Adsense earning in the associated account of blogger and adsense… does it affect my earning if I exceed the number of ads to be displayed on your blog?

    Hey Harsh,
Thanks for helping me out with this but I did not understand your article completely
How much ads can be displayed total in a single page? like in homepage how much max ads can be displayed and in post page how much max can be displayed,
Also what would be the best place for placing ads in an article?
    Thanks 🙂

Ok, got it, but what about Responsive Ad Units? There is no any size mentioned in responsive ad units so how will I recognize in which category it is? Adsense content unit or Adsense link unit?

    Hello Harsh Sir,
I have a question regarding number of ads to be placed. Currently on my homepage i have placed a leaderboard on the top, below that i have used wider link unit. On the sidebar i am using 160*600 ad. In the middle of the homepage i am using 250*250 ad and there is one more link unit in this page only

in short: I am using 3 normal ads of different sizes and 2 link units in the same page.I have read in the google policies that 3 link units plus two search boxes are allowed but i am confused about the combination.

Means i can put in total 8 ads in a single webpage(3 content ads+ 3 link ads+ 3 search boxes??)

Sir Please clear this doubt of mine..I will be very thankful

    Wow wow 🙂
So youre telling me I have not maximized my revenue from google adsense 😀
I currently have one skyscraper from left sidebar and 728*90 + 336*280.

Now going to add another 3 ads 🙂

  11. Animish

336×280 above or below the post works really well for me.

    Hi Harsh,
I have added 3 contextual Ads on my blog but, when I am link units existing ads getting disappeared.
It means that we are only able to add 3 ads in all. May be 3 contextual ads or 3 link units or combined which should not be more than 3 units
Check out your self and Update the post

    Regards
    Kushal Azza

can anyone tell me .. if i give more ads on a page , the CPC is decrease ?
means CPC depend on the no of ads on a page or not?

    1. Munna

Adsense CPC depends on how many ads you show and from them how much click you get the less your Click through rate the less is your Cost Per Click. @ Abhilash Bro

  14. Ishaan

I use both ‘image & text’ ads & also Link ads. As per my experience, link ads work like magic if placed before the post body, apart from navbar of course.

  15. ankur_rautela

I am using to 336*280 ad units and one 728*90 ad unit and when I am creating google adsense for search, always its shows any error.

  16. Guru

@Lynx, you are absolutely correct. You can put the maximum number of ads from each category on a single page without any issues. Well this is a very nice piece of information given here. This would really help the new comers.

  17. Peter Lee

Yes ! What Harris said is right. Maximum 6 ads consisting of 3 ad units and 3 link units are allowed. But I only put 1 336×280 on my main page. While on the post page I put all 3 336×280. I did not put any link unit because I think it doesn’t look good on my blog.

  18. Mohsin

I feel very Strange after reading this post because Google allows three Adsense content unit Ads on one page where i can see only one on this page. Why?

  19. Harris

I have tested different ad units in my websites. I got success with 320X200 and 468X60 format ads on the top of the post. We can have maximum 6 ads 3 from ad units and 3 from link units. I have no any experience with video ads.

  20. Lynx

Can I put all of 1 and 2 and 3 on one single page?

i.e. that would mean I can put 9 ads altogether on a single webpage. Is my understanding correct?.

Or it means 3 combinations of links and text/image ads.

    1. Harsh Agrawal

      Lynx
      You can add
      3 Content
3 Text link and 2 Adsense for search,…
So in total you can have 8 ad units…

      1. Pete

        That is so true, Harsh!

According to google (https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/48182?hl=en) you can
“place up to three AdSense for content units on one webpage. This includes a maximum of one 300×600 ad unit (or similar sized ad) per page. IN ADDITION TO THREE ADSENSE FOR CONTENT ad units, publishers MAY ALSO PLACE up to three link units and two search boxes on each page.”
