Knowem : Check Username Availability on Hundreds of Networks

When it comes to branding and your social media presence, there are a few rules of thumb which we can’t ignore. One of them is using the same username and avatar on your social media profiles.

In 2012, a social media presence for any online brand or blog is very important, and the first step in social media marketing is to claim your brand names.

There are thousands of Web2.0 properties out there, and it’s pointless to recommend registering everywhere. But there are a few social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, Vimeo, Youtube, WordPress.com and a few others, without which your social media presence is incomplete.

Whenever we start a new blog, brand or a long-term social media campaign, we should not only look for domain name availability, but also for the availability of your brand name on social media sites.

Imagine if Google’s official Twitter profile (Twitter.com/Google) was not owned by Google but by a spammer tweeting spammy links or out-of-context tweets? This would be harmful to a brand’s reputation, and for this reason it is highly recommended that you claim your brand/username on popular social media sites and properties as soon as possible.

Use Knowem to check if a username is available:

One way to check if your desired username is already taken is by going to the individual site and trying to sign up. You might be lucky enough to find the name available on all sites, but that will be time-consuming and unlikely to produce the result you desire.

Alternatively you can use a free site called Knowem which will allow you to check whether your desired brand name is good for your branding purposes or not.

Knowem will check for username availability on all popular websites with one click. All you need to do is add your username and click on the “check” button. See the screenshot below for a better understanding:

The best thing is about Knowem is that you can click on any icon in the results, and go directly to the sign-up page to claim your username!

Another feature which makes Knowem stand out from other similar sites is that it allows you to check usernames based on category. For example if you are a blogger, you might like to sign up for blogging- related Web2.0 properties and social networks, and with one click you can check for your username availability in the blogging category. Similarly, there are various other categories such as design, corporate, social bookmarking and many more.

You can choose the category which fits your niche, and start creating your social media profiles. By creating profiles, you might end up earning some valuable backlinks via the profiles of the web properties.

If you are one who believes in outsourcing, you can also use Knowem’s professional service to create social media profiles for your brand. This is very effective for corporate branding or for business branding, where the quality of work is more important than time and money.

They have various plans to choose from, and if you have time issues, hiring someone to create professional Web 2.0 properties for you is not a bad idea.

If time is not an issue for you, you can create quick profiles for yourself in no time. Just have a bio and a photo ready, and use any auto form filler extension to quickly fill out the registration form.

No matter what method you select to create your profile, it is always a good idea to have a common username and presence on all popular social media and networking sites.

Use the comments section below to let me know if you are familiar with similar online sites which allow us to check for username availability on multiple websites in one shot.
