jumpcut is going offline

Finally Yahoo! has made it official to shutdown their free video editing and hosting service jumpcut.com. Jumpcut was acquired by Yahoo! way back in September 2006. According to Yahoo! this service would be going offline on June 15 2009 as a part of ongoing prioritization efforts.

Excerpt from jumpcut website:

“After careful consideration, we will be officially closing the Jumpcut.com site on June 15, 2009. Therefore, we are no longer accepting new uploads. This was a difficult decision to make, but it’s part of the ongoing prioritization efforts at Yahoo!”

Existing users have not been able to upload videos from last December as they said

“We will be keeping the Jumpcut site up and running for the foreseeable future so you˜ll still be able to play, remix and share your existing movies “ you just won’t be able to upload anything new.”

If you happen to be a jumpcut user, then you can download your uploaded videos using this software utility by Yahoo! They also suggest users to transfer these videos to Flickr, which now allows video uploads. Though the site is going offline Yahoo! still owns the technology which drives jumpcut. We might see some updates to flickr flicked from jumpcut ;)

It happens with every acquisition by Big guys of small sites/company. It happened with Geocities first and now this.

Its like they buy small companies just to shut them down so that their monopoly remains.
