iPad Verdict

By this time we have all heard about the iPad. Well, that doesn’t come as a surprise when it’s a much sought Apple launch event. Last night we witnessed the launch of a new product from Apple. In fact, you have already gone through the iPad specifications in our earlier posts. So the question is how good is it?

I must first admit that this device isn’t very overwhelming, however it would be doing injustice to call it underwhelming too. First things first. Going by the standards Apple has set before, this wasn’t much of the ‘Oh-I-really-want-to-buy-this-one’ type of product.

Secondly, it indeed is an exploded form of the iPhone and the WebOS interface isn’t new to us. The interface no matter how good it is has already done whatever it could do to appeal to us, at the iPhone and iPod touch launches.

As Steve Jobs, himself stated they are trying to create in here, a new category that fits between the smartphone and the laptop. This isn’t an easy task to do, no matter who’s set out for it. It may not be an instant seller but this is the beginning of a new era. We all cannot help admit how the iPhone brought a revolution to the smartphone market.

Well, let’s look at the positive. This device enters a market where the platform is already established. So not only are the users familiar to the interface but their previously purchased apps work on the iPad too. The App Store has already proven to be a great hit.

As for the negative, there’s way too much to fit in to this post. We’ll talk about all the places we think the iPad lacks at and what we’re expecting from apple at the next upgrade. Yes, we do miss having a camera on this device too…

The point that I’m trying to make here is that this device is only a first version now. Apple has opened doors to developers to work on this device. It’s been only two weeks that the devs lay hands on this. So, we have to give them some time firstly to show us what more its capable of. The device indeed is very capable but we do need apps to make use of its fullest potential.

At a price point very similar to the Kindle, Apple is definitely in the league. My conclusion is that, while I’m neither going to purchase it next quarter nor do I feel the need of a similar device, this is one thing I’m really going to follow and see where it’s going. This is a landmark which is largely going to influence the future of the way consumers read and carry books, newspapers and other forms of media.

Do tell us what you think about the iPad and the changes you would like to see in it?

The iPad’s no better than the iPhone or a laptop except for some terms like
reading notes, periodicals and other documents.
I have hundreds of books on the shelves in my home office that could fit easily inside that device – and then pop it in my bag to take with me everywhere; with battery life of 10 hours as advertised, it would free me from the weight and power cord ‘tether’ of a laptop, and the limited useful viewing space of the iPhone. It would allow me to not only have reference material ready at a moment’s notice, but also provide entertainment in the form of fiction, and multimedia (music, movies, and games).
