Open DNS: Public DNS server to speed up Internet

    by Harsh Agrawal

We all wants to use fastest intternet and that’s why we opt for Braodband connection with higher speed. Do you know it’s not only your broadband speed but your DNS is also responsible for slow speed or DNS fail errors. Most of the time your broadband provider suggest you to use their default DNS. For example, when I got my Airtel broadband connection, I was using their DNS.

Later on I got to know about open DNS which is much better, powerful, feature rich than my default DNS address given by broadband provider.  If you don’t understand or never came across the term DNS you can refer to Wiki article on this.

Just to give you an overview DNS do name resolution, that is when you type www.shoutmeloud.com It resolve the website name into the server IP address and that’s how site opens at your end.

But sometime the DNS provided by your ISP couldn’t do name resolution effectively because of low cache size and the server is not powerful enough to take care of all the queries and that’s the reason you face the website could not be found error message.

You can come over this problem by using Open DNS. According to wiki page an Open DNS is DNS resolution for consumers and businesses as an alternative to there Internet service provider ISP.

The open DNS is fast because there servers are located at major location and they maintain large size of domain name cache.

Therefor when you start a query:

Suppose you type a website address http://www.google.com

The time taken to open this website will be much lower then that when you were using your ISP DNS.

The other features of Open DNS are:

    • Phishing filter
    • Domain blocking
    • Typo correction.

I know so many good words for a particular service, You must be thinking that I’m trying to sell some thing here.

FYI this service is free and you can use there Open DNS address.

    • 208.67.222.222
    • 208.67.222.220

Use this DNS address to speed your internet. Enter these DNS address in your network connection settings as shown in the image:

    dns 300x225

We have other options for DNS like Google DNS and you can refer to my earlier article on how to change DNS. If you are still not sure about which DNS server to use, refer to DNS benchmark tool to find the fastest DNS around you.

Google DNS is amazingly fast. I do not mean the downloading speed rather the browsing speed. I used to use opendns before though.
