Open DNS

How many time while surfing you come across with broken link or page do not found though it is not actually down but your DNS could not do complete name resolution and this is very common with ISP DNS, though you can cross check if the website is down for everyone or for just you.

If you don’t understand or never came across the term DNS you can refer to Wiki article on this.

Just to give you an overview DNS do name resolution, that is when you type www.shoutmeloud.com

It resolve the website name into the server IP address and that’s how you surf.

But sometime the DNS provided by your ISP couldn’t do name resolution effectively because of low cache size and the server is not powerful enough to take care of all the queries and that’s the reason you face the website could not be found error message.

You can come over this problem by using Open DNS. According to wiki page an Open DNS is DNS resolution for consumers and businesses as an alternative to there Internet service provider ISP.

The open DNS is fast because there servers are located at major location and they maintain large size of domain name cache.

Therefor when you start a query:

Suppose you type a website address http://www.google.com

The time taken to open this website will be much lower then that when you were using your ISP DNS.

The other features of Open DNS are:

Phishing filter

Domain blocking

Typo correction.

I know so many good words for a particular service, You must be thinking that I’m trying to sell some thing here.

FYI this service is free and you can use there Open DNS address.

Google DNS is amazingly fast. I do not mean the downloading speed rather the browsing speed. I used to use opendns before though.
