Facebook offers Facebook list settings which is very useful to manage your Facebook friends list. Specially, when you have friends on Facebook from different part of your life, like college, school, office, family and so on. Facebook list settings helps you to organize and manage friends in proper lists which you have created. In this guide, we will learn and understand everything related to Facebook list like create Facebook list, delete Facebook list, edit Facebook list and so on.
Before we move ahead, I should tell how and why I started using Facebook list feature. If I didn’t do anything with my Facebook newsfeed, it would actually be a huge waste of time to watch. As I’m writing this, I have about 350 friends, and let me tell you that it’s a mess. Many of my friends are family, friends from school, people I just know, and many are people I’ve met online and business associates. There are a lot of different people with all sorts of interests. And they’re using Facebook for their personal gain (well, we all are).
If I didn’t do anything about my Facebook newsfeed, I would see all the different games they’re playing, all the different lame quotes, read stories about what they’ve eaten, and how great their husbands and children are, I would read things I have no interest of reading.
I believe that no matter how many interesting friends you’ve got on Facebook, you should do what I’ve done. It makes sense and you’ll save a lot of time.
Filter your friends into categories
The first thing I’ve done is to create lists of my friends. For instance, I’ve created a list called Internet marketing, and I’ve added all my friends who are writing about or are involved in Internet marketing to this list. Now, when I’ve got this list, I can send the people on this list an email (and remember that I know that they’re involved in Internet marketing) and I can watch their news feed. Also, if you are using Facebook send button, your lists will be handy to send interesting article to targeted people.
Let me show you exactly how I manage my Facebook friend list using Fb lists feature:
How to create Facebook list ?
- Click on friends in the left sidebar.Click on create a list on the top right.

Now, all you need to do is the following:
- Enter the name for your list.
- Add people to the list (among your friends).
- Click Create List.

How to use Facebook list?
Your Facebook list is ready. Just click on the name of the list in the left sidebar, just below friends.

After you’ve clicked on the name of your friend list, you’ll see the newsfeed only from people within the list.

To me, this makes a big difference. No matter what I’m looking for, and no matter why I’m using Facebook, if I don’t filter my newsfeed into categories I’m really wasting a lot of time. If for some reason, you want to add any perticular friend into a list, you can go to his profile, click on friends and add or remove him from any of your friend lists.

In recent Fb update, Facebook has added couple of lists by default. For example, there is a list call “Close friends” when you add a friend into this list, you will get notification for your friend every updates. I would suggest add only your close friends or person whose Fb status updates, you want to track.
How to delete Facebook list?
So far, we have learned how to create Facebook list and how we can add people into our lists. Now, suppose you have created some extra lists or you decided to delete couple of Facebook lists, here is a quick tutorial to remove such unused or orphaned Fb lists.
- Go to your Fb profile.
- Click on More under Lists on left hand side.
- Click on name of the list which you want to delete.
- On the list page, under manager list you will see an option to “delete list”.

Hey Jaydip,

Thanks a lot
Facebook is really powerful when it comes to business and marketing. The problem, at least to me, is that it can also be a waste of time. So many people are using it, and it’s information overflow. That’s why it’s important to filter the information.
I use the Facebook list feature for segregating my friends but I am disappointed with Facebook because it allows you to mail only 20 people at a time.
So if you have IM friends and you want to send them an offer or invite them for a webinar…. I have to send mails to 20 friends at a time.. and then repeat the process. Makes the whole purpose of making a list fail…
Thanks, Jens – it is amazing that Facebook does not promote lists better, as they make Facebook a much more effective communication tool.
