Update: Google authorship will now show the name of author only. There will be no author image or circle count.
Couple of days back Mukund wrote about “How to add Author pic in Google search result” and believe it or not, sources says Authorship is going to be one of the hundred signals on which Google will rank your content. Anyways, even if ranking doesn’t matter, having your profile pic infront of your article in search results will increase credibility, branding and most important more clicks.
I have been working on ShoutMeLoud to use AuthorShip markup but being a multi-author blog, it’s little complicated. Anyways, Google has simplified the process of showing Authorship in Google search and here is a quick step by step tutorial on how you can add Authorship in a WordPress blog authored by single author. The process is as easy as step 1-2-3 and follow this quick guide:
With this new improvement, all you need to do is add a link to your Google profile with the rel=”author” from all the pages of your blog and then link to your Website from your Google profile. Is in’t it easy?. Now, let me make it more easier for you.
Adding rel-“author” on your Blog:
You can use any image or any text to link from your blog to Google+ profile. For now, to simplify the process, simply add the following code in your Blog widget. Replace xxxxxxx with your Google+ profile number. (Example)
<p><a href="https://plus.google.com/xxxxxxxxxx/" rel="author" target="_blank">Join us on Google+</a></p>
Link back to your Blog from Google profile:
So now, all you need to do is go to your Google+ profile and click on Edit profile and add your blog link. To simplify the process more for you, here is a quick video which will show you how to add your website link into Google+ profile.
Now since you have done all the steps above, time to go to Rich snippets tool and check any URL of your blog and see if you get an Image like above or you see any Error. If you see an image, move to next step else repeat the all step and make sure your link have “author” rel and you have linked back to your blog. (Don’t forget to clear your cache).
Here is an official video from Google in which they have explained how easy it is to integrate Google authorship.
Matt also disclosed that they have been talking to popular CMS companies to add an option to integrate Google authorship markup. From his talk, I assume BlogSpot bloggers are going to get Authorship markup embedded in the system soon. But for now, you (WordPress, BlogSpot or any platform) can follow this simple step to show their profile picture into Google search.
Soon I will be posting a working tutorial for Multi-authored blog, till then you should implement Authorship on your single author WordPress blog. If you are on Google+, I would love to connect with you. (Harsh Google+ profile).
