I think it's mainly because of the twitter's technology architecture and slow servers. Because of which Twitter used to fail often in the past. but things have changed a lot since then and now Twitter works a bit fast. At a point where I had like 214 followers, it kept showing 135 for 3 days and in annoyance I removed it from my sidebar with no intention of ever putting it back again.
