How to Disable Default Lightbox Effect On BlogSpot

Huh! The newly released Lightbox effect has caused a lot of trouble on various blogs eespecially those photography blogs which had another version of Lightbox effect installed on it. If you had missed the earlier article about this newly enabled effect, I recommend you to check it now by navigating to the following link – Is BlogSpot Testing Lightbox Effect for its Images? Just ensure whether the effect is visible on your blogspot blog before you proceed with this article:)

As far as the responses regarding this newly enabled Lightbox version  is concerned, many seemed to hate it – including me! So, if you plan to remove this effect from your blog, then follow the instructions below.

1. Navigate to “Design>>Edit HTML” and make a backup of your template by clicking on the “Download full template” link at the top of the page. Once the back up is over,  search for the following piece of code. Use CTRL+F to search – the easy way.

2. Just replace the above code with the following block of code.

<script type='text/javascript'>
function killLightbox() {
 var images = document.getElementsByTagName('img');
for (var i = 0 ; i < images.length ; ++i) {
images[i].onmousemove=function() {
var html = this.parentNode.innerHTML;
this.parentNode.innerHTML = html;
if (window.addEventListener) {
} else {

3. Save your template and your done!

Note: I’m not the one who coded the above mentioned script. I’m just trying to share the script which disabled the Lightbox effect on my demo blog – probably it can work out on your blog too. The actual credit may go to whomsoever it may concern – definitely not me:)

I did come across a discussion wherein a person from the blogger team has promised to discuss about the the option for disabling this effect on blogger and to make it more flexible. So, the above script shall be a temporary solution. To know more about the discussion, just visit the following link – Removing LightBox Effect from Blogger.

Just let me know if you were able to disable the effect on your blog with the script above via comments! I would love to receive your response!

    Well, I`ve just the opposite problem – I would like to activate the light box in one of my blogs (see link under “website”), but it doesn`t work.

    Would be thankful for any idea.

    Thanks Mukund, I wanted to disable the Lightbox effect on my blog, because it was irritating. Blogger should have given options wherein we can choose to enable or disable the lightbox effect.

    Well nice article. But mukund, i think the lightbox version is good, i had always thought of that kind of feature in blogger and had thought of migrating to wordpress, but now since its available, so i changed my plan to switch from blogger. well as you mentioned, that this feature may affect the photography blogs, then really its a matter of concern. blogger should provide options to switch from lightbox effect those who don’t want that. by the way good post. it will be usefull to some of my friends having photography blog

    Where is the comment from Google about disabling it? I haven’t seen anything from anyone at Google since they posted a glowing announcement for this yesterday saying “your pictures never looked so good”. Some pictures don’t even work now – at all.
