How to CrowdSource Your Design Ideas using

Last time when I talked about blog design, I explained how custom design will help you in better branding. Though, the problem with solopreneur blogger like you and me is getting the best work, at a decent price. Usually, when I hire someone for blog work, I prefer social recommendations, over using Google to find people. At times I use network like elance, Freelancer to find developers, designers. The problem with freelancing sites is, even if you wish to spend good for quality work, result is not always the same. A good solution to this problem is crowdsourcing.

Imagine, you have a budget of $400 for your blog design, and you have your design requirement ready, instead of hiring individual guy, you organize a contest, where all designers can submit their design, and the design which you like, takes the money. The concept of crowdsourcing is nothing new in freelancing business, as existing business like 99designs is using it successfully. Crowdsourcing model is very beneficial, when you want to get best of the work at your given price.

How to Crowdsource your design using Contest:

You can crowdsource design in various categories like business card, blog design, Twitter background design, logo design, and many more. Here is a complete list: design contests

Here is the complete model on which freelance contest crowdsourcing model works:

Freelance crowdsourcing

Here is how you can crowdsource a new design:

  • Go to Freelance site, login or register if you don’t have an account.
  • Click on post contest at the top nav-bar
  • Select the project on which you need work to be done.
  • Give a name to the project.
  • Add details of the project. You can also attach related files. It’s a good idea to include rough file if you have created one. This will help designers to use your idea, to create a better design.
  • Set the budget of the project. Don’t try to be cheap, as with better bounty, you will attract more quality designer.
  • You an also set the number of days to run the contest
  • Now, depending upon your requirement, you can add few addons, that will help you to attract more designers. These addons are paid, but they will help you to make your crowdsourcing more effective.

Freelance contest

CLick next, and go ahead with the payment. You can add fund using PayPal, Credit card and Skrill 1-tap. So far from my experience, blog design matters a lot. All the blogs I have in my network have unique design, and it helps a lot in branding, and making a unique impression. More over, you can use this for getting your social media profile design, or better order a complete branding page.

Instead of hiring individual freelance designer, here you will be getting tons of design options, and you keep the right to accept any design. This will not only help you to get the best design, but also it will be value for money. For a talented design, freelance contest crowdsourcing feature can give great monetary benefit.

If you are using any other website to crowdsource freelancer by contest, let me know.

For a low budget, crowd-source is a good way to get a good design for less. But for a rel professional job, it will not work. This is because, those who are good in their jobs will not enter a competition, waste their time to design something they will not be paid for if they are not selected. So, it is only new and unestablished designers that will participate in the contest.

Whatever you have told about crowd sourcing is true. But I doubt whether we can get really good people using it, because all the good and brilliant people are engaged and busy with the work. I do not think there would be much time with those good, brilliant and busy people to take part in a contest until the offered contest is itself from an redound name or brand. I think if we need the best people then there has to be some other way to find rather crowd source. correct me if I am wrong.

Harsh, thats not ethics. OK, let me give you a example in your terms. You provide theme customization, right?
Lets say, I need theme customization done, so I will ask you and 10 other people for the same job and I will say I will pay to only the one I like and rest go home with empty hand and if you are one of those who went with empty hand then how you will feel?

Hope you got what I am trying to say. And one more thing those big companies are not fool that they pay like hundred thousand dollars (even more) just for a logo instead of doing a contest. Because they know the real meaning of a logo and they also know designer @ contest can’t do that.

However not everyone (or company) can provide those real design works but there are few who can in low budget also but you need to search such companies or person. And yes even my Co. (Dzire 2 Dzine) provide that service in decent price (if you remember I told you about my Co. last year or so).

If you are still not clear I am working on something which can give an idea but it will take around 3-4 months to complete.

I got your point, but it still doesn’t make sense to me from a consumer point of view. If I will need a design, I will usually ping few designers and get a quote on the same. The quotes which fits my budget, I will ask those guys to work on it.. And eventually it’s the final product that I will pay for…

Now with crowdsourcing, I’m saving my time and money, by letting people bid on my project, and work on it.., Obviously, designers who have enough time to do the work, will only participate.. If not, crowdsourcing is not a forced system, but a system which benefits both the designer and the client. As client get more options, and best designer gets reward in term of money.

More over, there are pros and cons of crowdsourcing your project, and one of them is originality issue, which will always be there.. It’s a client choice to decide, which model they prefer (Crowdsourcing or working with an individual company or freelancer)…

Personally, I’m a favor of Crowdsourcing, as when I’m not certain about what I need, crowdsourcing helps me to get fresh ideas, and also in budget….

It’s like what you pay is what you get… Plagiarism is an issue when you working on design contest site, or even with an agency. It’s true, it hard to be creative within short span of time, but one can always organize a contest in a way, which can benefit creative designs… From a client perspective, I find this model useful when one wants various design ideas in a limited budget…
