For the past several months I have been noticing that many blogs are running contests such as “Comment and win $100!” or “Free $60 cash giveaway!”. Contests and giveaways are old techniques used to drive more traffic to a blog.
In the case of a new blog, contests can be very helpful in attracting new readers. All a blogger needs to do is choose the right product and market the contest well.
The basic idea is to get free backlinks, free advertising and new subscribers. In my experience this strategy always works and is very beneficial to blog owners.
Let’s have a quick look at the basic results you can achieve by running a contest on your blog.
Direct benefits of running contests on your blog:
When you run any kind of contest, whether the prize is free advertising, software giveaways, free ebooks or cash, you will attract many other bloggers who may refer to your contest on their blogs so that their readers might benefit from your contest.
Indeed, if you see any such contest, and you know the blog to be a legitimate blog in your niche, feel free to write about it on your own blog. This will increase your value and credibility in the eyes of your readers because you are giving them an opportunity to take part in a contest in which they might win something of value to them.

Free contests drive new traffic to your blog by generating new interest based on your contest. Many popular blogs are running contests now for this very reason.
In order to drive new traffic to your blog, you can simply add a condition for entrance to the contest such as “To participate, tweet this post and ad a link with your comments!” This method, when employed correctly, can achieve huge spikes in traffic. In addition, you will get lots of comments appealing to even more readers, and from there even more users will participate in your contest, and so on.
I know how well this works, as I have personally experienced this very phenomenon in my previous blog contest involving a free Yahoo meme invitation giveaway.
In addition to the free backlinks noted above, a contest also affords you the benefits of free advertising. Your blog will be exposed to a whole new set of blogs and their readership, and your free giveaway or contest will be easily paid for by the traffic and revenue that it generates.
You will also likely generate new blog subscribers (for free!) with your contest or giveaway, and a whole new set of readers will begin to follow your blog.
And finally, running a successful contest will expose your brand to new advertisers, who may just want to sponsor your next blog contest.
