Google tablet: the Apple ipad killer

With the Apple iPad proving to be such a disappointment, we (atleast most of us) were left wanting a lot more.

Not very surprisingly, Google announced its new design of tablet that looks very similar to the ipad. People have already started expecting something good out of it and its been labeled ‘The iPad Killer’.

google tablet 520x390

Google recently launched its new phone Nexus One running on Android and made by HTC. It can be expected that Google will work on the OS than the hardware of the tablet itself. The Android has shown some very good potential in the Nexus One but what it can achieve on the tablet is yet to be seen.

Things the Google tablet should have in order to (actually) be the iPad Killer:

CAMERA and VIDEO PLAYBACK CAPABILITY

The iPad is curved and can’t even sit flat on a surface. Keeping the design flaw aside, the ipad doesn’t have a camera and can’t playback videos. The Google tablet will most certainly be thinking about covering these areas and capture and larger market that their Apple twin has most definitely lost out on. A large section of people who love to watch YouTube will be looking forward to Google tablet’s release.

MULTI-TASKING CAPABILITY

The biggest omission of the Apple ipad was its inability to multitask. This showed that the ipad was infact a blown up version of the iphone. People didn’t quite miss this feature much in the iphone since it definitely increased the performance and battery life of the phone, but its going to pinch them very hard in case of the ipad.

PLUGIN INCLUSION

The iPad doesn’t support plugins, including Flash, meaning that web pages that depend on Flash or Java technology won’t load properly. In addition, Apple announced their intention to lock in AT&T as their sole provider which is already having trouble keeping the iphone services running smoothly. The road ahead for the ipad seems rocky already.

Even with all the flaws in the ipad, it comes with a hefty price tag. Google will almost certainly be able to produce their tablet at a lower cost and yet provide facilities and functions that leave you feeling oh-so-restricted with the ipad.

If Google does manage to include the features mentioned above and yet deliver it at a lower cost, the Apple ipad will be blown out of the water. With Nexus One already gaining relevance as an iphone killer, the upcoming Google tablet will put it in the running for mobile supremacy.

With all that said, the Google tablet is still in the works and not expected to be out for atleast a year. It maybe expected sometime in 2011.
I’d definitely be keeping a keen eye on how Google handle their tablet.

nice post Shashank. btw the iPad does play videos, maybe you meant flash videos in particular that it can’t play. and the competition is only going to help these products get better so it’s more than welcome.

Thanx Rajat. Yeah, I meant flash videos. Maybe I should have made that a little clearer-but hopefully people won’t get confused since I’ve mentioned that Youtube will missed by ipad users.

btw Harsh, if there is a dictionary for your wordpress posts try adding iPad, iPhone, iPod etc. to it permanently so that “ipad” and “iPad” don’t appear simultaneously on the same post, looks odd.

I made the conversion to MAC almost two years ago and now I am a huge MAC fan, honestly can’t imagine going with anything other than a MAC, even if it is a Googl product and I am a fan of Google’s everything.

I agree with you on this one. I prefer Apple products too. The Macbook Air and the iMac are excellent gadgets, however, the ipad seems to have fallen short in a lot of areas. I think Google can do a better job unless Apple makes some major changes.

I belive Google tablet or whatever it might be called shouldn’t have a hard time beating the iPad. iPad itself really isn’t revolutionary in any way, IMO – so it shouldn’t be hard for Google. But that’s good, it will get competition sooner or later and competition is what makes the products better.
