Google adsense Testing Featured ads With a Star mark

by Harsh Agrawal on November 19, 2009

in Google adsense

Google adsense is one of the best advertising network for bloggers since it will keep your revenue keep going and you need not need to wait for some direct advertisers to fill your ad inventory. Anyways that will be a different topic of discussion. Latest adsense news is they are testing featured ads in adsense.

In this featured ad adsense will show a star mark in front of ads and if you hover your mouse over that star, it will show featured ads. Personally I have not seen it but after following this post, I find the confirmation of this news.

Here is the image which shows how featured ad in adsense will look like

adsense_featured_adsObviously this will increase the CTR and revenue, since a star like this will be very prominent. According to the above mentioned source, Google adsense team confirmed these featured ads as :

We are currently running a limited test in which a small number of users are seeing ads that are marked based on signals related to quality and relevance. This experiment is part of our ongoing efforts to help users find what they’re looking for, and we’re closely monitoring feedback.

I find this update nice but on the second thought it will discriminate between ads , specially for adwords users.

What are your thoughts about these featured ads in Google adsense? Is it good for publishers and advertisers?

Do you mean the star mark only appears on the ad which links to a quality and relevant page of advertiser? If so, this is great because it catch readers’ attention and training them that ads now are more relevant.

Good for ad publishers but don’t know what the advertisers have to say about this thing. CTR will improve in this way.
I want google adsense to make few improvements
1. Delivery of check should be made after 50$ revenue.
2. more thumbnail ads.

It will be interesting to see if adding the star will actually increase the CTR for the ads. A lot of people are oblivious to little things like that. I guess it only takes one extra person noticing to increase the CTR though.

The other question is will the “featured ad” status be something users can buy or will it remain a function of quality and relevance?

I’m excited to see the change though. Can’t complain about a little higher CTR for AdSense.

@Latestphonereviews – I agree. they should drop the payout to $50 from $100. So many people give up on blogging before they hit $100 because they haven’t made any money. Just by cutting it to $50, I think it would be more incentive for bloggers to keep going.

wow! I haven’t seen an adsense ad with a star like that. Is it limited to certain countries only? Yes, it will discriminate other adwords advertisers but it would be beneficial to Google. I believe ads with stars are more expensive than the regular ones. Just my thought.

Hi Harsh:

We see a “light bulb” and not a “star” so we are wondering if that has change since your report or is the “light bulb” a different.

We notice that it is on every page on our site but not sure if it is due to service that lets the ad follow you everywhere. Sine we did not visit the site (per Google TOU/TOS) we are clueless at the moment.

This kind of ad is appearing on my website too, but it has a small light bulb rather than star.
