Are you installing a new Facebook-related WordPress plugin & need to enter Facebook App ID & secret key?

Facebook App ID & Secret Key
  • Save

As a blogger or a developer, you would need to create App ID & secret key today or one day to get things done. Today I was configuring one WordPress plugin that used to work before without the requirement of Fb App Id & secret key, but now it’s not the same. The plugin I was trying to configure was Facebook Album embed & even after embedding an album from my Facebook page, it was giving me error:

“message”: “An access token is required to request this resource.”

I realized this was one issue that many of you might be facing due to recent changes in Facebook’s API. In this tutorial, you will learn how to use Facebook developers page to create a new app & get your own Facebook App ID & Secret key.

How to create a Basic Facebook APP & get App ID & Secret Key:

These are simple steps that can be followed by anyone without the requirement of being a developer. So if you are configuring a Facebook related WordPress plugin or using a 3rd party app which requires Fb Secret Key & ID, this tutorial would be of great help.

Head over to Facebook developers page & click on create a new app

Create basic Facebook App
  • Save
  • Select the kind of app you are using. For configuring WordPress plugin, it’s usually websites.
Add new Facebook app
  • Save
  • On the next page give a name to your app. Make it relevant or if you are testing this right now, call it test app.
Name for your Facebook app
  • Save
  • Click on Create new Facebook App Id. In the pop-up select the category for the app.
create App ID
  • Save
  • Click on create app ID. On the next page click on Skip at the top right & you will be taken to your created App page, where you can retrieve your app id & secret key.
Retrieve Facebook secret Key
  • Save
  • Click on show in front of App secret, and you need to enter your Facebook account password to see the App secret key.
  • Now copy-paste the App ID & App secret values in the plugin or tool that you are configuring.

In my case, I was configuring Facebook Albums plugin & it worked flawlessly after pasting the values in the plugin settings. I hope this quick guide would help you when in need to configuring any Facebook related plugin on your blog.

Feel free to ask me questions if you are unable to complete the process or stuck in between. If you know someone who need help with this, do let them know about this resource.

My WordPress theme has WP Social Login Plugin. I want to show user’s Facebook ‘friends count’, twitter ‘followers count’ and google+ ‘followers count’ in home page after user login.
Is this possible? How can i do this ?

    Thank you for your article.

I have reached the last page that you show in your post, but I’m concerned about this sentence which is visible in your screen capture: “This app is in development mode and can only be used by app admins, developers and testers.” This appears to say that my new app id won’t work.

I only need to use Like and Share buttons, but when I use Facebook to generate code for these buttons, it always includes my app id. Can you tell me if my Like and Share buttons will work?

    Thanks so much.

All Facebook apps are “Sandboxed” by default. All posts will be visible only to to Admins, Developers and Testers. You need to take an app “Live” if/when you would like your posts to be seen by everybody.

Click “App Review” on the left. Change “Do you want to make this app and all its live features available to the general public?” switch from “No” to “Yes”.
