Error 404 (Page not found) error is most common error because of either typo or dead link and letting your visitor go because of the 404 error is like loosing almost 5% of your total visits.
There are many ways to create custom pages and the easiest way is by adding Google search code which you can easily get from Google webmaster tool.
Login to Google webmaster, Click on tools and click on enhance 404 pages.
You will get code for your website like this in the above image.
Copy this code at the appropriate place in your 404.php page.
