Is your website down on Hostgator?

Or are you tired of waiting for endless time on HostGator support chat?

Recently I made you aware here on this blog that Hostgator has been sold to EIG & over time we hear mixed reactions to the same. This is a good time for me to offer some alternatives to Hostgator, as it would be beneficial to an existing Hostgator user like me whose hosting due date is this month; and we can move now to another web hosting service instead of renewing with HostGator for the next year.

Let’s have a look at some web hosting alternatives that offer a hosting service of similar or better quality than Hostgator.

When I Googled Hostgator alternatives, I was bombarded with many options, and I will list for you the top hosting services that I have personally used or used for my clients’ sites. Based on my experience and user recommendations, here are some of the best web hosting services, if you are looking to move from Hostgator.

HostGator alternatives including non-EIG hosting:

Here are a few of the features which I consider when looking into any shared hosting service similar to Hostgator:

  • Server quality
  • Technology used
  • Bandwidth and storage space
  • WordPress compatibility and support
  • Technical support
  • Billing system

Bluehost

When it comes to shared hosting, Bluehost is a well-reputed name and it is better than HostGator in many ways. They offer only one shared hosting package, and they are known for their reliable hosting.  Bluehost offers unlimited bandwidth and storage and offers cPanel hosting.

Many of my WordPress clients’ sites are hosted there, and I have never faced any technical issues.  Only in the case of something major would I have reason to use their support, but on the one occasion when I did request support to make some changes in php.ini, it was completed successfully in no time.

Bluehost offers a free SSL Certificate & support for PHP7. This is one thing I missed a lot when I was hosted on HostGator.

One of my clients had traffic of almost 20K/day, and Bluehost’s server was handling the WordPress load without issue. However, make sure you install any cache plugins on your blog for the smooth functioning of your site. Bluehost is among the best alternatives to Hostgator.

SiteGround

SiteGround is a non-EIG company, and they have made numerous changes over time in their hosting quality and infrastructure. In fact, Siteground is one of the top-recommended hosting companies for anyone who is looking for a non-EIG WordPress hosting service. They offer cutting-edge technology such as Varnish cache, which will improve your WordPress performance by 4X.

SiteGround has been creating a great name for itself in 2024, and I’m already using them for the hosting of four of my WordPress blogs. Here is a guide to installing WordPress on Siteground.

SiteGround does offer free Website migration which will make it even easier for you to move away from Hostgator. You can use the link below to sign up for SiteGround for 70% off.

InMotion Hosting

InmotionHosting was started in 2001 by a team of techies & in the last 18 years, they have become one of the popular hosting choices for the U.S.A. They are based in Los Angeles & offer various hosting types including shared, VPS & dedicated. What I like the most about them is their support with superior quality in the native language.

They also offer free website migration with no downtime & renew your domain for free. If you don’t wish to renew your existing domain, you can always get one free domain with your hosting purchase. I would suggest getting hosting for 2-3 years from them to make the most out of it.

One of the best things about Bluehost is its resource protection. On most shared hosting, your site will go down because of any faulty site consuming high CPU resources. Bluehost has implemented its own technology to handle this issue. So technically you will be getting the benefits of VPS at no extra cost.

I have already shared a few articles related to Bluehost, which you are welcome to refer to:

I’m not listing a large number of HostGator alternatives because my goal here was to offer a shortlist of the top options available to you. To be clear, I have only hosted WordPress sites with the hosting services mentioned above, and my recommendation is based on my experience with them.

You can opt for any of these alternatives, however, my first recommendation is SiteGround for its excellent server quality and support.

Use the comments section below to let me know if you have any recommendations you would add to this list based on your experiences.

Thank you for this article confirming my concerns. I am in the process of leaving Host Gator after a 2+ years with them. The last straw has been how they are handling a current issue with an account upgrade. Non-responsive to say the least and . I work in technical support and just don’t understand this.

I just got done setting up a reseller account with InMotion and so far I am very impressed with the whole user experience and interface. Their tutorials and documentation are much more user friendly and I even received a welcome phone call from them.

If anyone has used Host Gator, you might notice that their help/documentation support page is one theme, the login portal is a different and then the Host Gator cPanel theme is another.

This all adds to what should be predictability in a user experience, but it falls short.

Even the reseller plans are better priced at InMotion than they are Host Gator.

It’s sad, I used to praise Host Gator, but I think I am witnessing their downfall, especially since the sellout. Amazing it only sold for $225 million. I would have guessed way more than that. I guess that’s what Host Gator and it’s current user base are worth…

Another long time Hostgator customer here.

I’ve been with them since the start of my online journey, in 2010.
In the beginning, I was on a shared server. Then, since 4 years, I have all my sites on a dedicated server.

I was a really happy customer, until a few months ago.
Since then, I noticed a deterioration on their overall services.

I kept a record and I had to chat with them to have the server rebooted, because completely unresponsive, at least one time each month, since March of 2018.

I also saw, by experience, that they are outsourcing their support to non-American people (which is plausible, but it was not like this before). If you are lucky, you get a skilled guy who solve your issue right away. But it also may happen to talk with a non-prepared representative and throw your time away, as you need to close the chat and try your luck again.

I never tought to change hosting, or looking for alternatives, but today, my Google search ended on this page. I read through all the commenters and I notice an overall discomfort an all the web hosting services available out there.

Harsh, you are with HostGator too. Are you really looking to switch to another one? If so, I’d really know your opinion.

    Thank you in advance!

    Hi,
I had my website with Hostgator for 3 years on a monthly fee basis, in December they charged my account over $500 without notifying me, I had no idea what the charge was for, finally figured it was probably hosting charges in advance, didn’t know at what price or for how long. Tried to contact them, never heard back from anyone. My bank were the ones that notified me of the charge, as it was out of the ordinary, they pursued it and got a refund, I have not dealt with Hostgator since. I have a question, if I sign with a new host, will I need to re-set up my Webpage? Or will it still exist as was?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I have a problem with Hostmonster which is the same company as both Hostgator and Blue Host. They have suspended my account because they have detected malware. When I contact their support, they won’t tell me which files they are concerned about. Nor will they unsuspend the account to let me scan it.

Instead they suggested I make use of a professional service provider like Site Lock.

I trawled through the files I have and removed some that looked out of place and contacted them again. Tech Servvices put me through to the right department and the consultant identified himself a Site Lock support.

As far as I am concerned this is scam and it sucks big time.

had the same with hostgator, now i have cancelled my account after 4 years

I, too, recommend SiteGround. It is a complete upgrade over HostGator’s poor servers.

    Long time Hostgator customer.

HostGator used to be great, fast servers, great customer support, very fast response in live chat. I’m a business account holder. I noticed a down turn in their service a few months ago. In 2013 I was moved to another server and it was noticeably slower. Previously snappy page loads are sluggish now. Initial teething issues were blamed, but it’s still slower even now.

Live chat used to be a 1-5 minute wait, rarely more than 10 minutes. In the last few months this has grown to over 30 minutes, usually nearer an hour. Today 90 minutes and my “estimated wait time” is still 30 mins. Live chat has become pointless.

Today my issue is PHPs mail() function has stopped sending emails. My untouched contact form script stopped sending. My email reminders to clients failed to send this morning (from a cron triggered script) and a very simple test script with nothing more than a call to mail() fails to send.

The reason I’m working on the site is because Hostgator will restrict how many emails you send from your website. I’m guessing this is an over zealous anti spam catcher. I have over 400 clients and my newsletters only went out to 122. I cc myself on all system email so I know they did not send. I simply loop the mails to send until they are sent, and don’t hammer the server when doing it. The ones that did go went in batches of 61 (not a value set by me) at a time and only 2 batches were ever sent (hence 122). so because I can’t communicate with my customers, I’ve had to write an entire database driven “drip feed” emailer sending a few at a time with cron (many extra late nights on top of running a business). However I’ve not got to the point of sending any email from it yet, not one. So that’s certainly not the issue. I was using mail() to debug a script but never got my debug mail. I tried the simple test script above and nothing.

Right now my contact form is down. I can only wonder how many times this has been the case over the last few years. As a small business owner I’m in shock about how bad this is.

I’ve tried many hosts over the last 15 years I’ve been developing websites, and really thought I’d found a reasonably priced host with excellent service. But like everyone, over time they get greedy, over sell their services and decline.

Hostgator’s bubble had most certainly burst. On the plus side I’m much more efficient at moves my sites these days.
