How to Create an AdSense Account (For Newbie Bloggers)

331Shares

As a blogger, you have surely heard of the AdSense program from Google, which is one of the best contextual advertisement programs available.

In this post, I will demonstrate how you can create an AdSense account for your website.

There are many AdSense alternatives available, but no matter what network you try, you will likely find that Adsense is the best.

However, if you have some marketing skills, you may also want to look into affiliate marketing.  My post on Affiliate vs. AdSense will give you my personal insights into both networks.

When I started blogging, “AdSense” was a foreign concept to me. When I initially signed up for AdSense, I needed a lot of help from my friends, and I still was not sure I was doing it right.

For beginners who are not familiar with AdSense, it is an advertisement program for publishers started by Google (See Wiki details), wherein contextual ads are placed on your blog, and you get paid when someone clicks on these ads.

In this blog post, I present an essential guide for beginners who are not sure how to apply for AdSense.

There are a couple of requirements which you must meet before you can apply for AdSense:

  • First, of course, you need to have a website.
  • You also must be above the age of 18, otherwise you will need to apply using the name of a parent or guardian who gives you permission to do so.

Watch this video to understand what your blog needs to have before you apply for AdSense:

Steps to create an AdSense account:

AdSense has recently changed the account approval process to include the following steps:

  1. Sign up for AdSense
  2. Add AdSense ads to your blog
  3. Wait while your account is reviewed and either accepted or rejected
  4. Complete identity verification (Personal, business or both)
  5. Add Payment details to receive payments

Although the new AdSense account approval process used to be lengthy (weeks), but in 2022, it is fast and usually completed within 1-2 weeks. You should be able to run ads on your website within 48-72 hours.

It is also important to make sure your blog or website is abiding by AdSense policies before applying.

Also, be sure to read the terms and conditions mentioned on the sign-up page to learn more.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating an AdSense Account:

First, go to the Signup page for AdSense.

You will see an option to create a new Google account, or you can choose to use your existing Google account.

Create AdSense Gmail account
  • Save

Note: If you have a custom domain name & you are using Google Apps for your domain email address, I suggest you use that to sign up for your AdSense account. When you use domain-specific email addresses ([email protected]), the chances of getting your AdSense application approved is increased . You can also create a domain-specific email address using Zohomail.

Otherwise, you can use your existing Gmail address.

Website Details:

This form is straightforward. You simply need to enter your website address and select the content language. For the website, URL use your blog address, and make sure to add it without “http://”.

AdSense contact information:

Adsense contact information
  • Save

This is the most important part.

I remember making a couple of mistakes at this part when I first signed up. Hopefully, if you follow this guide, you won’t make the same mistakes.

The “payee name” is very important. Use the same name under which you have a bank account, as AdSense will send you checks or Wire transfer under that name.

If you make a mistake here, changing the payee name of your account will be difficult in many countries, including India.

So ensure your bank account name and payee name are exactly the same.

Next add your contact information and fill in the other details.

Accept AdSense policies:

  • Save

Read the AdSense policies and put a check-mark in all three boxes.

Once done, click on “Submit”, and on the next page, you can review your details.

Make sure that all the details are accurate and up to date!

Once everything is set up, in order to get paid from AdSense you need to complete two further steps:

  • Verify your identity
  • Submit your tax information
  • Enter your pin
  • Save
Confirmation email after successful identity verification

After you have completed the personal verification, and once you login to your AdSense account, you would see the following message (inside AdSense dashboard)

Important: Check if additional tax information is required from you. All YouTube creators and partners are required to submit tax information to ensure any applicable taxes on your payments are accurate.

Click on “Fix now” to start filling the tax info. Depending upon the country you are in, you should consult your tax advisor to get this right.

  • Save

be sure to read this information from YouTube about the US tax information requirement:

YouTube is required to withhold taxes on earnings generated by US viewers. Those withheld taxes are sent to the United States Internal Revenue Service.

As My info says, if you do not fill out the US tax forms in your AdSense account, 24% of ALL your earnings will be withheld.

If you fill out the US tax forms the maximum withholding rate is 30% of your earnings from US viewers only.

So it should be worthwhile to fill out the US tax forms in your AdSense account.

Filling out the US Tax information should be relatively straightforward if you do not have tax treaty information to submit.

You will need to enter a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). That varies from country to country, but here are some examples of TINs in different countries:

  • India: Permanent Account Number (PAN).
  • Indonesia: Nomor Pokok Wajib Pajak (NPWP).
  • Japan: Individual Number (nicknamed ‘My Number’).
  • Russia: Taxpayer Personal Identification Number is known as INN.
  • United Kingdom: Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), National Insurance Number (NINO).

Notice that in many countries it’s an ID number, not necessarily a tax account number. If you do not know what number to enter, you will have to contact your local tax authorities.

Note: Please do NOT use the link to “Add tax information” that My Info provided. That opens up Google Pay’s tax form submission page. That may work for some publishers, but my already submitted tax forms are not shown there (my AdSense Payment Profile is separate from my main Google Payments profile), so that will not work for all Publishers.

Instead:

1. Sign in to AdSense

2. Click Payments on the left menu

3. On the Payments Info page click “Manage Settings”

4. On the Settings page you will find the option to add or edit United States Tax Info

That should work for all AdSense accounts.

AdSense Pin:

You will receive an AdSense Pin by mail once you reach the threshold of $10. You need to add the pin to your AdSense account.

  • Save
  • Save

You will receive payment once your AdSense account reaches the $100 threshold.

You should read this guide to learn about enabling direct bank deposits for your AdSense account.

    Hi Harsh Agrawal,
I have applied for adsense for more then 3 times but i got same error message in email from Adsense support team
“We did not approve your application for the reasons listed below.
    Issues:
    – Contact address incorrect, incomplete or not provided”

I live in village of West Bengal state. There is no house no. or street no. So how to put my address in Adsense application form.
    Please suggest me.

    2. Raashid

They want to convey you a message that the contact us page published in your site does not match with the contact address provided by you to Adsense.

  2. prabha

  3. Ashok Sharma

Harsh, I recently applied for adsense and my application was rejected. Now, should I reapply with the same application or should I apply with a new application with a different email (a domain specific email, instead of gmail)? Is it ok for adsense? Will I get a message something like – “this website is associated with an unapproved application?”
I also want to change the payee name which is not the domain owner?

Sorry for so much questions, and thanks for such a great and useful website.

    1. Harsh Agrawal

      @Ashok
In this case, you need to reapply for new domain and not the same domain. Seems like they are rejecting your Application based on content which is hosted on your site earlier or you applied before and your application is rejected.
If you have the first application and rejection Email, there will be a reapply link and kindly use it to reapply.

hello everybody would any genius help me to sort out my problem that i am submitting my website to adsense 3 times and it gots rejected with no reason i don’t know what to do with this site. This site is 5 months old and got genuine traffic of 30 to 40 persons per day i want to know what i can do to submit this website to google adsense account..

    1. Yashraj Talan

See, you should read what AdSense sends you via email. You can get the same blog approved after multiple retries(you can also consider using a fresh account as email address) if you write good posts after each disapproval. That’s what they want. My blog also gets the same number of page views but my blog isn’t popular at all and frankly speaking, this is a very low number for the number of page views you should have(not MUST have) for AdSense approval. My blog isn’t approved yet and it’s a year and a half old. Don’t worry, try again after some more posts(2-5 would be okay).

  6. Lucent

If I start a blog and publish like 15-20 original and unique posts, Am I going to have to wait for SIX months in order to become eligible to apply for the Adsense program?

    1. Pawan Diwakar

You don’t need to wait till six months…

  7. Nihar

    Harsh, Great guide for newbies.

To be frank, I agree with most of the commentators here. It is still a myth and a bit luck / unluck.

I have seen that few friends even after having genuine content not getting approved and few friends with copied content having approved.

It is a mystery and one more thing is if a guy tries from any of the Asian country chances are less as compared to non-asian country and i think this is true.

What do you think Guys (harsh)?

  8. Fabrizio Van Marciano

I only have one dig with Google Adsense, it’s way too easy for anyone to apply these days, there are simply too many Google Adsense abusers which is quite frustrating in itself, and then there is the problem of individuals using it to create MFA sites which is yet again another kick in the teeth.

  9. Akshay

in my opinion no one can truly understand google….
but i heard that nowadays google adsense is very strict for indian users and they dont approve an account for indian users easily

  10. Pradeep

My adsense account was created in 2006 and I signed up with a gmail account. The account was activated immediately and I use the same account for all the websites I own now. Google Adsense team is updating its sign up policy regularly. I am curious to see what do they require to sign up in the coming months!?

  11. Rahul solanki

My google adsense account was approved instantly in my first attempt. My adsense account is 3 years old and with 1 post my adsense account was approved.I don’t know why but i think it was my luck.

  12. MagicalMumbai

My site is 6 months old (www.magicalmumbai.com). I applied for an adsense account and got rejected, using a gmail address.

For the moment, am using ads from a friends account… But when I applied for adsense, I had removed all ads.

Any idea, what could be going wrong and probably what I could change and re-apply?

  13. Girish

Any one have list of PPC options other than Adsense. I am pretty sure that no one can stand near to google adsense. But for Harsha this can be a next post topic.

Chitika is one such but when compared to adsense it pays too less

  14. Ankit Saini

Can we able to apply for 2nd adsense account with different name.
    Thanks

  15. Manish

I used to blog on blogspot 1 year and I applied for Google adsense programme

    Result : Application not approved

I bought a domain and applied again

    Result : Application not approved

Bought a new hosting and domain and have applied now hopefully they accept but there are few chances because my blog is new and with less content…so they might reject. But who knows I get lucky this time 😀

I think adsense should have few changes.

They should not consider the 6 month old blog rule. You said its a myth but most of the blogs including mine didnt get accepted just because of that

  16. Girish

    Harsh,
Is it ok if i apply for second adsense account. I know we can use channels to separate the domains and use the same account for multiple domains. But still i would love to have two adsense accounts for two set of domains i have (one is tech and downloads) other is (shhhhh its a secret) 🙂

does their TOS says anything about that ?

  17. Sathish @ TechieMania

Getting an AdSense account is still a myth to me. When I applied using one of my blog (4 months old) they didn’t approve my application. But when I do the same by using a blog(just one month old) they approved my application. It might sound weird, but thats how it worked for me.

  18. Pumama

I already have Google Adsense Account but don’t know how to make money with this account because my site is new and doesn’t have enough traffic 😀

    1. Harsh Agrawal

Pumama you should work on traffic generation first and after that you should add adsense..Or for moment you can place one adsense rectangle box on sidebar top..

  19. Saket Jajodia

As I think it is not important to use our domain email ID, as because I got my blog approval in 1st time using Gmail ID, but it is important that your blog/website should be 6 month old…

    1. Harsh Agrawal

Saket 6 months old is a myth..Though they have mentioned in their guidelines…but when I signed up using ShoutMeLoud, it was 4 months old…

      1. Jagan Mangat

and mine was three months old with 30-40 per day traffic from Google(organic) and that too with gmail id!

      2. Kartik@DailyTechPost

I agree with you Harsh even I got my adsense approved just after 2 months…and one of my fellow blogger got his Adsense approved via bloggerparty.com…

        1. Basant | Cloud Computing

@Pritam: Though Google mentions 6 months old blog as a pre-requisite for AdSense for Indian publishers, I don’t think it’s a ‘Policy’…It’s just a guideline to filter-out spam blogs.
If you’ve a blog with good+unique content apply for AdSense after 2 months. I am an Indian publisher & got my AdSense a/c approved after around 2 months. Though I’ve a Google app Id, I had applied with my gmail id & got approved in 3 working days in Dec 2009.

          1. MAHESH RAJPUT

i create my adsense account but not create account and error show “Cannot connect to the server. Please check your Internet connection and try again.” my account already 1 year old. kya add karu website main. i am very confuse.

      3. Raashid

i signed when my domain was only 15 days old and got approved

  20. Mani Viswanathan

Quite weird that Blog email works & generic Gmail doesn’t. I got Approved quickly when I made two good blog posts @IndyaRocks. For those who are struggling to get approved, try your luck there.

    1. Harsh Agrawal

@Mani Generic Gmail account works but from my experience Google apps for domain works fast. I know it’s weird but probably this is one of rare case which happened with me. 🙂

      1. Radu Tyrsina

I always wondered – why is Google Adsense so popular amongst indian bloggers? Harsh, I think this is a good idea for a post

      2. Pritam @ Specky Geek

I think your account approval had nothing to do with email address [unless you have a history :)]. If you have a six months old blog/site with unique content, you will get approved. Sometimes Google Adsense guys mistake genuine content for copied stuff. Adding some more good posts solves this problem.

        1. Sushil

Google Adsense is not a ‘ghost’. My request was approved within 4 days (Google’s official Adsense time frame). It is true that Adsense requires unique sensible informatory content to users.
Nothing else is to worry about if you are genuine. Imagine you are going to visit your website, then think.
Any further queries, ask on my site.
