What is Backlink in SEO?

According to Wiki Article : Backlinks (or back-links [UK]) are incoming links to a website or web page. In the search engine optimization (SEO) world, the number of backlinks is one indication of the popularity or importance of that website or page (though other measures, such as PageRank, are likely to be more important). Outside of SEO, the backlinks of a webpage may be of significant personal, cultural or semantic interest: they indicate who is paying attention to that page.

In simple layman words :
What is Backlink in SEO
Backlink is number of inbound links from other blogs and website. More number of inbound links means better search engine ranking. In other word your blog will start gaining authority and chances of getting better page rank in the next update. Another advantage of backlink is that your website will start getting index as soon as you publish articles. This means your website is gaining authority and Google is giving weightage to your blog.

Also, if you are aware of Google Page Prank (Oops I meant Page rank), Backlinks from relevant domains helps you to get high PR in no time. I have explained the same in my Backlink case study for PR earlier.

Another common terms associated with Backlink is Anchor text. When ever we talk about quality links to your site, Anchor text plays a major role. If you are getting proper anchor text optimized backlinks to your site, you will be ranking higher in no time.

I’ve checked my backlinks from different 2-3 different sites in which i found totally different links in all those checkers. Now confused about which site is good and reliable to check backlinks..

  • Prem krishnan

I have checked my backlink list in backlink checker websites. I found about more than thousands and thousands of backlink from the same websites. They are no follow links.. How to remove that no follow links from that particular website?

    • Harsh Agrawal

Even Nofollow links are useful, if it’s coming from quality pages.

      • Prem krishnan P

I don’t know how it has happen.. I just commented for a post thats it.. Now its above 4000 from the same website.. Does it affect my site and i also found some variation in my traffic. Thats y worried about this no follow links… Any idea how to remove that?

  • Abhay Nagpal

Hi Harsh, that’s a really useful piece of information for newbies.
But i have a doubt here. If we comment on any blog and give a link to our website in the comments, we often get blocked from commenting.
How do we actually get backlinks then?

  • sudha

It depends..If you have done everything right..within a month or two google will recognize the 301 perma redirection.. Make sure you check every individual post permalink and that should match your blogspot permalink for every individual post. Because when you import your blog to wordpress, your individual permalink will be borken

  • kerokill

Post on the forum and many similar comments in blogs. It was the best way to promote the measure because it combines the public more quickly. I’m not interested of the traffic, I would be interested in people in my niche for us to press to talk about my problems.
They are increasingly available traffic from Google and not your mouth. If the goal is to rank in search engines, the quantity and quality of backlinks are the decisive factor # 1

Backlinking is a very nice process and becomes easy if you write some great guest posts on websites like shoutmeloud and callingall geeks. I easily get advantage as me and my other editors of the blog keep writing for other blogs for better backlinking. Recently, concepts like revenue sharing has made it much easier to write posts for other blogs and if you write something good you can published.

  • ejay

The info is good.. I was much worried about my back links. I got good idea from you.. I think i could improve it now.. Keep up the gud work..

  • Nevin

I think if the content you offered is important or interested enough, people will be willing to spend time on the surveys that they have to answer ahead.
For example, if you are offering online video clips people are keen to watch online or download, it will make better motivation.
Then, you should be able to get a lot of backlinks from blogs whose owner like your websites.

  • Nihar

    Great post.

I also get backlinks by commenting. But, i get very less backlinks by someone actually sharing my link on his/her blog :(

  • theboss

And just like that? I have found it incredibly difficult to get quality backlinks. I have submitted to many directories, but they often don’t pan out. Anyone have any suggestions for directory lists?

    • Neko Auto

You can find directories list sorted in a free, paid and niche categories at and yea submitting to directories wont help in getting much quality backlinks as most of those dirs are spammy with lots of links in lots of categories. Try submitting only to quality dirs which can help ur site and not hurt the rankings

  • The Gooroo

You couldn’t have said things better! :)
I’ve been told by many to avoid link exchanges also, so I stick by that. I get a lot of backlinks from writing quality content.

  • djashish

Very true ,if you spend time on other’s blog and leave a genuine comment people will defintely get back to you and then it depends all on your content to make the first time visitor as regular one as Neko said.

  • Neko Auto

yes i too personally think nofollow links are also useful but it depends on why u r commenting on blogs. Commenting for serp & backlinks OR for popularity & traffic. Commenting on nofollow wont help in getting backlinks in Google but make u beneficial in gaining traffic which is the main aim of a webmaster.
i try to comment on every blog i find interesting no matter if its dofollow or nofollow. Most bloggers comment as to build up a group or say get into community and get into limelight in every bloggers eyes. it makes a relationship.
And offcourse Content is the King as to get real popularity and fare results on your blog. Useful content gets ur blog reader turn to a subscriber or daily visitor of ur blog.

  • George Serradinho

All sites would love backlinks and try to increase it everyday. I do my best to increase mine and look at all backlinks before approving them to ensure that they are top quality.

The DoFollow and Nofollow does not matter anymore according to what I have read.

Thanks for sharing this info :)

  • Swashata

This is cool! Previously I was having many backlinks on my blogspot url! Now I have changed to my custom and gone are every one of those! Normally how much time does it take for Google for recognizing 301 perma redirection?
.-= Swashata ´s last blog ..Yahoo home page gets a make over =-.

    • Harsh Agrawal

It depends..If you have done everything right..within a month or two google will recognize the 301 perma redirection.. Make sure you check every individual post permalink and that should match your blogspot permalink for every individual post. Because when you import your blog to wordpress, your individual permalink will be borken…

Back links can build better identification of your blog for Search engine crawlers.
Harsh really good job done by you here…

  • Tycoon Blogger

I try to build quality back links each and every day. Like you said commenting on forums and blogs is the way to go. It is interesting that you mention that the do follow designation might not be that important anymore. That is good because I comment on blogs I like to read, whenther or not they are do follow or not..
