6 Important Advice For Professional Bloggers

  • Save

Being a blogger have its own perks, and one of the biggest ones is you are your own boss. That means, no 9-6 office, you work whenever you want and however you want. Everything is magical about blogging, but at the same time, it comes with few problems.

Especially when you are blogging alone for long, you crave social interaction. So it’s important for you to go out, and meet people. You can do that by:

  • Working from cafe
  • Working from co-working space
  • Attending blogging events
  • Attending Workshop or networking events

The point is, don’t let freedom of blogging become your own enemy. I’m sharing a few tips that I follow to ensure I don’t burn out with the pressure of blogging. This is very important, as we are living in the world of information overload, and it could take away peace of mind.

1. Take a regular break between work

Taking breaks between work is essential to save your eyes from the computer. It also refreshes your mind and you are charged up to work with more energy.

I have been following the Pomodoro technique for the last few years, and it has helped me to stay productive without putting mental or physical stress.

Here is how it works:

  • Divide your day in packets of 35 minutes
  • Use a tool called Focus booster to measure the 35 minutes

Here is how this tool looks like:

  • Save
  • In those 35 minutes, focus on only one task (Close any unrelated tab or apps if open)
  • If the phone is not necessary, put your phone in offline mode for those 35 minutes
  • Once the timer is off, take a break for 5-10 minutes (as you like)
  • Use that break to recharge your body by doing push-ups, or just walking or meditating (You can use Wakingup app for meditating). You can also use this break to plan what you want to work on next. The key here is to stay away from your screen in the break time

Keep repeating this throughout the day… This will bring maximum productivity, and you will not feel tired at the end.

2. Work in the proper light

Most of the bloggers ignore the lightning condition. Few of them work in the darkroom which is overkill for your eyes. The brightness of computer screen effects our eyes badly. Try to make a balance between computer brightness and room light. Work in natural light by opening the windows of your room.

I don’t prefer putting on A.C, and mostly work with fan + windows open for natural air.  If you work late night, use the flux app, it makes the color of your computer’s display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day.

3. Blink Your Eyes (Seriously!) 🙂

Working more than 10 hours daily causes dryness of eyes. Blinking helps them give it rest and does not put strain into eyes.

It is medically approved that blinking eyes is good.

You can also use an eye drop to wet your eyes. Make sure you keep your eye drop close to your work area. Here is mine:

4. Take ownership of your work area

If you are working in the office, then you don’t face too many problems because the office environment is good for work.

But if you are working from home then you have to create a working environment. You should keep away yourself from your kids and home life till you are working.

Design your work area, as you like.

This is how I have designed my work area

Use posters, quotes as laptop background, play the music you like. You should own your work area like it is your kingdom, which also brings a sense of complete ownership as well.

If any distracting object present in your room, remove it.

Here is a simple exercise you could do:

Take a deep breath

  • Now, scan your work area mindfully
  • See every object as a separate object, and measure what kind of feelings arises.
  • If it is a happy, confident, inspiring feeling, keep it.
  • If seeing an object in your work area, makes you sad, angry, confused, irritated, remove it.

Keep your awards, pictures of your loved once, people who inspire you around your desk. I call it “design your work area for your maximum productivity”.

5. Install a white board

Install a whiteboard to plan all the further events. Note down all the important things you have to do in the coming week or month. Try to make a to-do list on this board.

Or simply use it to scribble down your thoughts when you take a break from after 35 minutes time.

Note: This one is not essential, but I have found a lot of value in this.

6. Keep your mobile away from you

This is important when you are in writing mode. A ring on the phone or push notifications will break your concentration. One practice that I follow is to disable Push notification on my phone. They are handy but since we are so active on social media, it could be very distracting.

Let me show this with an example of productivity with, and without mobile:

This is my productivity without mobile (Notice the score)

and this is my productivity score on the same day after including mobile time

That’s a significant 12%+ drop in productivity. Now, multiply this for 30 days or even 365 days, it is a serious loss of time.

You can measure yours using the Rescuetime app.

Like it or not, these advices has worked well for me to create award-winning work like “ShoutMeLoud”. A lot of my students have shown significant improvement after implementing above advice.

Nice post dude. I think you follow each one of them.

I agree with you on the board thing. It is so easy to get diverted when you are on your online ventures.

Love the idea of installing a board. I have little pieces of paper and envelopes lying around with notes all over them. This is a fantastic idea that I will try. Great post

I had some problem in eyes before, now its cured i think… 🙂

My suggestion is don’t sit long hours before PC…in between gaps wash your eyes with water, see the distance object, do some simple exercise for your eyes, drink water more..
