While the world is going gaga over the new Android phone launches every other weekend, we all know what the fact is. And yes, let me shout it out loud here on “ShoutMeLoud” in crystal clear words. The iPhone remains to be the most desirable smartphone. It recently got felicitated as the Gadget Show’s Gadget of the Decade and it has been awarded year after year after year. And with rumours fast spreading of a possible iPhone release next year, we cannot stop ourselves from demanding these seven possible changes that we want from the iPhone. So here we go.
Front facing Camera -for video chat
To be honest, I do not know why Apple is still keeping us away from this particular feature. It only makes sense with an internet enabled smartphone with Fring and Skype being available as free apps to be able to make Video Calls. And a front facing camera is the only logical way through which we can video chat while watching our mate’s face on the other end of the chat. C’mon guys at Cupertino. Hear us out.
FM Radio.
I know it is not an essential one. But c’mon. With London having almost 15-20 stations, we love our FM Radio. Spotify and Lala stream music over the internet and also the iPhone’s memory contains enough space to carry your own music. But the rush that you get when someone plays your favourite track -especially Aerosmith over the radio when you’re on a bus, stuck in a traffic jam at 8:30am in the morning, just uplifts your day. And it is only fair that the iPhone has one when the neighbouring guy with an HTC Tattoo can show off his HTC Radio.
Detachable Battery.
We have been crying it out loud since the first iPhone released. And will not stop until Mr.Jobs listens to us. I know there are no signs of this happening in the not-so-distant future. But still, it is worth an effort, just asking for it. Puhleez Mr.Jobs. I can have detachable batteries?
Expandable Memory.
With flash memory cards, SD, MicroSD and the like getting smaller and smaller, and prices taking a nose dive, why not rectify this big shortcoming of the iPhone and give us, the users, the freedom to expand our memory according to our needs and not select a pre-allotted memory size on the model.
A New iPhone OS.
I know the iPhone OS has gone through firmware upgrades and the lot, but let’s make this revolutionary with the new decade and all. Surprise us with something dashing. A new GUI, a new work flow, dashboard. Make touchscreen work better. I don’t know how, but just do it!
Friggin better headphones/earphones.
We all know that iPhone headphones suck big time. I know we can go for Sennheiser ones, but why doesn’t Apple collaborate with them and offer it in the boxed set. Am I asking for too much?
lower price Or cheaper version.
The iPhone is still not cheap. No matter how much subsidy the carriers offer, it is far from cheap, and that includes even the 8GB version.[Comparative study of the price of the iPhone in the UK]. I just want to experience those awesome Apps that developers have made for you iPhone. But I don’t want to shell out a massive sum of my monthly mortgage over a phone. Neither would I consider selling my kidney for it. So please, do us a favour this festive season. Release the a 3GS 8GB version or surprise us with an iPhone Nano on a price that suits my pocket.
So there you go. That’s my list of the seven things I want on the new iPhone. What did you think about it and what else would you’ve liked to add to this list? Shout it out in the comments.

even though I am in love with iphone.. I have to agree that it is Overpriced.. in addition to the 7 features which u mention I think Iphone should also come with network lock..
you mean the a lock or unlock rajesh?
I find the post silly . If you want to experience awesome apps without shelling out the price than buy an itouch 3g . Simple .
You have 32 gb iphones , why do you want expandable memory. Sorry but this post was poorly written .
An iPod Touch 3G still has some limitations when it comes to features such as the video camera, and some apps are iPhone only and are not available for iPod Touch.
Again, getting an iPod Touch would necessarily mean to carry an extra device with you – another phone. It really gets cumbersome, coz you have an iPod, yuor keys, your mobiles, your IDs and your credit card -the list is endless.
The flexibility and independence of expandable memory cannot be replaced by a pre-loaded memory. There is always an upper cap on how much you can load on it, and personally, my music collection ranges beyond 32GB. Add to that movie files, apps, games. Now I know I cannot carry all of it at once, neither would I require all of it to here it on my 45 minute journey to work. But it feels good to have it with me, with no worries. And why not do it, when all other smartphones are going that way. Remember there was a time when PCs came with 512MB hard drives, and thinking of 20GB or 40GB memory was ridiculously huge. But now, all the perception of storage has changed.
And well, this is just a wishlist, and wishlists ARE silly
To quote you : “I just want to experience those awesome Apps that developers have made for you iPhone. But I don’t want to shell out a massive sum of my monthly mortgage over a phone. Neither would I consider selling my kidney for it. So please, do us a favour this festive season. Release the a 3GS 8GB version or surprise us with an iPhone Nano on a price that suits my pocket.”
The itouch is good for what you wanted to do. You can even make calls via Skype. The 4g is gonna have a camera for sure as well as be available is 64 and 128 GB (see wired) . If the have expandable memory the chances of the system to crash or become slow will become VERY high .
I have an iphone too , but I don’t use it for games and music because of poor battery life (Detachable Battery will be a hassle to carry) . Trust me itouch is the way to go , I have like 150 apps on it.
My iphone / itouch wishlist :
1. A psp joystick which would make games much better to play.
2. A louder internal speaker .
3. Better earphones with the pack .
4. Front camera.
No offence your post is passionate but you added some not so impostant features in your wishlist
.
Nice blog too
haha, i’m already a fan of your writing. pray that manufacturers become so to, and they start building features, not so much for functionality but so that one feels good to have it with them lol.
again, no offense, just my opinion sujoy. firstly cite a few examples of ipod specific apps. AFAIK, these apps just lacked microphone support earlier. even video camera is taken care of by 3GS.
next it makes a lot of sense to carry an itouch with you. my sister carries an ipod touch and a simple talk n text phone, n trust me its a very handy duo. your music device doesnt lose out on battery over radios(gps, gsm etc.)
now most noteworthy, about batteries and extra storage, you should look into some design and innvotion videos from apple. you see why they wanted to do away with removable batteries in iphone n macbooks is because, it saves on space as no space is lost in them. i’ll explain it in a post if you’ll want. but it’s remarkable n interesting to learn.
i have to agree with saif on this one. sujoy, you do already know how expensive flash memory is. moreover who carries a music collection of 80gb around? normal consumers don’t. those who do go for the ipod classic.
Good looking list. I don’t care about the headphones since I love my Sennheiser earbuds but a front-facing camera…now that’s something I’d love to have!
absolutely, high five gabe. shure is the best though. if only i could afford them.
I think indians are smart. Rather then buying overprice iphone I would instead go for the nokia 5800.
sheesh, i should really have gone through all the comments before i write my own. harsh might be mad at me for this
. sorry mate.
but you know i ought to thank sujoy for this post, as it brought up a lot of worthy issues, and misconceptions that is fun and helpful to discuss.
i hardly know anyone who uses two batteries for their phones. so wht is the point in having a detachable battery? instead of buying another spare battery you always can get portable chargers for your ipod or iphone. they are very common and readily available now.
and for expandable storage, whats the point. nokia and sony’s i use either have m2 or micro sd. so i can not use them directly in either my car’s dash or my laptop without adapters. so it doesn’t help a lot to have that feature.
Thanks Rajat for addressing all the issues with your insight on this.
I know (almost) no one carries a spare battery except for may be power users, who fly non-stop international flights, business execs may be[just guessing]. So detachable battery is perhaps a bummer. The only advantage of a detachable battery is the longevity of the device. As we know rechargeable Li-ion batteries go kaput after a couple of years. Although the life of a cellphone is short [max 2-3 years], I tend to give my old cellphones to my mum or dad to use.
Considering that situation, if I cannot replace the battery, the device is as good as junk innit!
Flash Memory is not cheap for the higher storage amounts. But an extra memory storage feature always helps.
I also do get the point that music+phone+video =low battery. But still, the freedom of knowing that you don’t have to keep tracking two devices to not fall out from your pocket coz of one single device having it all is what convergence is all about. And if we are talking of Indian travel conditions -in the bus, train or metro, it is quite essential. Whacya say!!
Saif has quite rightly pointed out that my wishlist is silly
But it is for us silly wishlisters, why all these innovations are possible. Who’d have thought a touchscreen phone playing music and having a GPRS and a camera , a compass and PDA would be a reality? 5 years back during the Nokia 1100 with Snake days -that was silly!
We really donno what the future of Li-ion Battery [or any rechargeable power storage] or Flash memory holds for us!
What do you think?
I’m with you on all of these with the exception of the FM radio. Where I live in the U.S. there are only a few (less than 5) radio stations and none of them compare to what’s available over the Internet.
I agree with you that the iPhone should have a better camera and probably a lot of other stuff as well. Personally, I think that the iPhone is plain awesome, and I wouldn’t change it for any other phone.
When it comes to the headphones, I agree with you that they are crap, but I don’t expect to get brilliant headphones when I buy a phone or an mp3 player. I have always had to buy new headphones. It would probably be way too expensive if Apple would add the new headphones to the iPhone (well, that’s the only explanation I have).
I am not sure if this is fixed or not, but I think it’s hard to add new free ringtones and especially for text messages. I am still using the default ringtone
