3G in India came little late but the way big players jumped into 3G war (Tata Docomo, Airtel, Idea, MTNL), they made 3G mobile communication possible all across the country. 3G technology has potential to create next revolution in Indian communication history because it opens the door to new improved services in wireless communication. So, let’s take a view on 3G technology.
3G India
Launch of 3G in India
The auction of 3G spectrum is under control of Department of Telecommunication (DoT). Currently only frequency band of 2.1 GHz will be used to serve 3G technology and it is for auction. This will cover about 90% metro areas of India as well as 15% of rural parts of country.
What is 3G? – An Introduction
As we can say 3G stands for “Third Generation”. It is technology for advanced communication. It gives high clarity, real time streaming & high speed internet access anywhere. 3G is next step in wireless communication and have improvement over current 2G technology. Speed, accuracy & security is the key objects behind this technology.
Current 2G technology is based on circuit switching while 3G is based on high speed digital packet switching. The main difference between circuit switching and packet switching is that circuit switching creates live link between two devices during communication, it leads to more bandwidth consumption & high response time; on other hand in packet switching communication I done in form of encrypted digital packets which reduce time required for communication.
History of 3G in India
Japan and Korea were early players in this space. They implanted this technology in their countries years ago, the aim was to provide better communication platform to people and to enhance information technology services. This is one of the reason why gaming is very popular is Korea & why Japan is a step ahead in information technology..!!
Improvements by 3G technology
3G will enhance our mobile communication experience by many ways. We’ll get high speed, clarity, accuracy & many new services. Following are the major changes we can see after implantation of 3G technology.
- Improvement in quality of audio communication. So, now you will not face any problem during call.
- Fast email and VoIP access.
- Real time video streaming.
- Online gaming
- Music streaming
- Shopping and roaming services
- Heavy data transfer is possible. So, enjoy MMS and media download on mobile device.
- High speed internet on mobile.
Impact of 3G
Higher use of mobile services by consumers surly increase profitability of service providers, but they have to invest millions of dollars to get spectrum license. They have to invest in local infrastructure that supports 3G service in each part of country. Currently prize of 3G cell phones are relatively high. So, it will make a hole in pocket of consumers. Competitions between handset makers will surly reduce the current level prices. New mobile related service will grow, value added services (VAS) players will surly make money by 3G. If online mobile apps & gaming will be popular then we can see new Apple app (iTunes) store in India.
So far, Almost all major mobile players in India has launched their 3G services and due to stiff competition prices of 3G in India are getting cheaper every day. Also, Airtel launched 4G service in Kolkata & bangalore in 2012 and soon we can expect 4G services in India.
In Rural India, BSNL (Government owned telecommunication company), has launched it’s 3G data card, which is making 3G connectivity possible in rural area. Though, still the number of 3G connections in India are not that high and we can expect number rising in future.
I have tried Airtel 3G and MTNL 3G service and both of them are satisfactory. MTNL 3G service is not consistent but downloading speed is always good. Which 3G service have you used in India? Do share your review and Feedback?

I’m also waiting for 3G services to be launched on Vodafone. I enjoyed live TV on my friend’s BSNL connection.
That’s really a Good News…but…I’m sure only 20% of the people would be able to use it because of the Price. As we are in the initial stage of 3G world its and obvious thing that prices would be very high which is not affordable by the common man!!
